About Spruce:
Founded in 1904, Spruce was once a bustling company town home to 300 people but was abandoned in the 1950s – while not a single building stands today, the historic footprint of logging remains. You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Pocahontas County while learning about the region’s timber and railroad industries and life in a rural company town. This hike is to a primitive region with limited facilities — make sure to wear water-resistant hiking footwear and pack a pair of binoculars, and plenty of water.
