October Outdoors: Pipestem
October 4, 2023 – October 8, 2023
Early October focus is typically on fall colors and a refreshing chill in the air at Pipestem State Park. If you’re not playing golf, taking a zip line tour, solo hiking, at the indoor pool, fishing, or dining in the Bluestone Restaurant, join us at these nature-based activities October 4 – 8, 2023. Free to attend and open to the public.
WEDNESDAY, October 4, 2023
10:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPP
Meet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space, birding apps commonly used, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min)
5:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPP
Come by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo and
learn some interesting bird facts. If you’re curious about winter feeding, types of food that attract birds and migration, this is a great opportunity to chat and have some bingo fun. (45 minutes)
THURSDAY, October 5, 2023
10:00 am- Barney Law Orchard Walk *YPP
Join us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident, Barney Law.
5:00 pm- What Should I Bring? *YPP
Meet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a talk about what you should take with you when you explore the great outdoors. It’s good conversation. It’s outdoors. It’s free.

FRIDAY, October 6, 2023
2:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPP
Meet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park.
7:00 pm- Campfire Time! *YPP
Meet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth, a fire-starting assistance, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour)
SATURDAY, October 7, 2023
2:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPP
Meet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once you
find them, you receive a prize! (30 minutes)
5:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPP
Meet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min)
6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPP
Meet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour)
SPECIAL MUSIC!
7:00 – 9:00 pm Live Music of Cody Bragg
Enjoy the sounds of native Southern West Virginian musician, Cody Bragg as he performs classic country and original songs. Find Cody on the patio at Black Bear Lounge at Pipestem’ McKeever Lodge. In the event of rain this event will be moved inside.
SUNDAY, October 8, 2023
8:30 am- Church Service
Meet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service.
10:00 am- Tower Walk *YPP
Meet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short, but steep hike to one of the best views in the park. Best views of West Virginia’s mountainous landscape in autumn.
5:00 pm- Taxidermy Talk *YPP
The Nature Center is the place to be to learn about much of West Virginia’s native wildlife, see our taxidermy collection, and touch authentic animal pelts.(30min)
Young People for Parks
YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. For more information visit the Nature Center.
