Mid-July! Nature Activities: Lost River
July 12, 2023 – July 16, 2023
Visit the nature center or the Lee House, plus these activities at Lost River State Park, July 12-16, 2023. Activities are free to attend unless indicated and open to the public. WHen visiting Lost River take the opportunity to attend a planned activity. You’ll learn more about the park, wildlife and history of the area.
WEDNESDAY, July 12, 2023
Lee House Hours: 10:00 – 11:00AM

2:00PM – Box Turtle Talk
Meet at the nature center and learn about our threatened Eastern Box Turtle. It’s the only land turtle in West Virginia.
3:00PM – Who Was Here?
Come to the nature center and learn all about animal tracks and signs in the forest.
THURSDAY, July 6, 2023

11:00AM – Copperheads
Visit to learn about copperheads, one of West Virginia’s two venomous snakes. See you at the nature center. No live snakes at this program.
1:00PM – Pollinator Gardens
Meet at the nature center to learn how to create gardens that will help our bees, butterflies and hummingbirds survive. We will walk on to our garden behind the Red Hall. A list of plants to help you get started at home is available.
FRIDAY, July 7, 2023
Nature Center Hours: 2:00 – 5:00PM
11:00AM – Box Turtle Talk

Meet at the nature center for a walk around the Administration Building and Rec Hall to see what we can discover in the field and along the forest edge.

Let’s review the habits and habitat of the Black Bear, West Virginia’s state animal. Are you bearwise? Bearwise.org.
8:00PM – Walk in the Twilight Zone
We’ll take an evening walk and look for bats, owls, and other night creatures. Bring a flashlight and meet at the pool Bath House. Let’s learn how nocturnal animals get around in the dark.
SATURDAY, July 8, 2023

9:00AM – Mud & Fire Yoga w/ Havala Schumacher
A 2-3 mile guided ‘mindful’ and leisurely hike includes a small notebook and a light snack. There is one hour of yoga included in the experience. A $12 fee covers activity costs. Meet the guide Havala Schumacher at the swimming pool.
9:30AM – Bear Necessities
Let’s review the habits and habitat of the Black Bear, West Virginia’s state animal.
11:00 – Noon – Creek Critter Crawl
We’ll search Howard’s Lick for wildlife and learn some stream ecology! Meet by the Pool Bath House. You’ll get your feet wet.
4:00 – Nature Lab – Owl Pellets
For the whole family. Join us at the nature center to solve a mystery. We will dissect owl pellets to see what he or she ate for dinner! Learn about owl habits as we investigate.
7:00 – 8:00PM – Campfire Time!
The fire pit is across from the Rec Hall. We’ll have a fire going and some stories and tales.

The history of the remarkable past of Lost River State Park includes “Light Horse” Harry Lee, the Lee Sulphur Springs Resort and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Stop by the Lee House to learn more. Follow the sign by Cabin 1 & 2 across from the swimming pool.
