Mid-August Weekend Fun: Holly River

Naturalist Jane Birdsong invites one and all to activities at Holly River State Park planned for August 18-20, 2022. Summer is transitioning into autumn. Join us. Attendance is free. Participation is fun. Because, by golly, it’s Holly!

2PM — NATURE CRAFT
Pinecone Bird Feeders
Meet the naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard (Balli Shelter if rainy) to make and take home a bird feeder to hang in your yard. All materials provided.
4PM — VERY FISHY
Learn the parts of a fish, fold an origami fish to take home, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond (YPP) Meet the naturalist in Old Pavilion
7:30PM — WANDERING MINSTREL
Naturalist Jane will stroll through campground 3 to play guitar & sing by your campfire if you would like to hear a song.
FRIDAY, August 19, 2022
10AM — BADMINTON & FRISBEE FRIDAY
For fun and exercise, meet Naturalist Jane at the badminton net near the pool. Pool opens at 11:00 am so we can jump in and cool off, and catch frisbees as you jump off the diving board if you want a challenge.
2PM — BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGE (YPP)
Experience the hazards birds must face as we play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path to reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home?
4PM — ARCHERY
Learn to hold a recurve bow, load arrows, target shoot and long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. Any age welcome. If you’ve never used a bow and arrow, this is a very relaxed program that introduces you to archery.
SATURDAY, August 20, 2022
10AM — Salt Lick Trail Hike
Meet the naturalist on the office porch, wear sturdy shoes. Hiking stick or trek poles are very helpful. 1 hour/ 1.2 miles.
2PM — SNAKES – Which 2 are venomous?
Learn to identify the copperhead and Eastern rattlesnake with authentic replicas and why we consider all snakes very helpful in West Virginia. Balli Shelter (YPP)
4PM — ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. Anyone of any age is welcome. If you’ve never used a bow and arrow, this is a very relaxed program that introduces you to archery.
All Naturalist Programs are FREE to everyone!
YPP (Young People for Parks) encourages youth of ages 6 – 16 to go outdoors and explore nature in our state parks. Completion of 3 naturalist programs in one week will earn a certificate; completion of 5 YPP programs will earn a patch.
