Memorial Weekend Activities: Beech Fork

Memorial Weekend at Beech Fork State Park is brimming with activities and fun. Visitors are encouraged to take advantage of these programs, particularly the Birds of Prey Programs offered two times on Saturday, May 27, 2023. Your host is Terry Watkins, Summer/Master Naturalist.

Morning Bird Walk
Grab your binoculars and camera and do some morning birding along the Road to No Where and Nature Trail, with the Park Naturalist. Meet outside of the Camper’s Corner entrance at Park
Headquarters. Don’t have binoculars? Come on anyway – we can see birds and hear birds. (1.5 hours) Join us! This activity is free to attend and open to the public.

Nature Time
Let’s see what we can find in ephemeral pools around the Park Headquarters. We will look for water critters and inspect them with magnifying lenses, before releasing them. Meet outside of the Camper’s Corner entrance at Park Headquarters. (1 hour) This activity is free to attend and open to the public.

Morning Exercise Walk
Let’s rev-up our day with some morning exercise. We will do 2-3 laps around the Exercise Trail. We can walk or run. It will be great to be outdoors moving. This activity is free to attend and open to the public. Meet outside the Camper’s Corner entrance of park headquarters. (about 1 hour)

Owl Pellet Dissection
Let’s dissect sterilized Owl Pellets to learn what owls and some other raptors eat. This educational event is a great opportunity to learn more about Owls. Meet at the Camper’s Corner entrance of Park Headquarters. Please sign up for this free event at Park Office…due to limited supplies, there may be a limit of one owl pellet per family or team of 2.
Event is free and open to the public. Program is outside Camper’s Corner entrance at park
headquarters. (1 hour)

“Wings of Wonder” – Birds of Prey
Come see live birds of prey at Beech Fork State Park with Three Rivers Avian Center. This
educational event is a great opportunity to learn what birds of prey and see raptors native to West Virginia, such as owls, hawks and eagles. You’ll learn about their habitat, diet and behavior, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. This special program is free to attend and open to the public with one presentation at 2:30 p.m. and a second presentation at 4 p.m. Program is outside at the activity building at park headquarters.
