March, Marching On: Blackwater Falls
March 24, 2023 – March 26, 2023
March is marching toward April. With weather more springlike than normal, you’re invited to take advantage of activities and programs at Blackwater Falls, March 24-27, 2023. From the bird, toads and turtles to hikes and deer tracks, join our fun and entertaining way to learn about Blackwater Falls and the nature of the area.
The nature center is open from 10:00AM until 4:00PM. Visit and see exhibits, our critter displays or to ask questions about the area and the park.
FRIDAY, March 24, 2023
10:00 a.m.
Bird Identification Fun
Join the naturalists for a beginners friendly game to learn how to identify birds and if time permits, we’ll test our skills outside. About 45 minutes. YPP
11:30 a.m.
Frogs & Toads
The start of the amphibian breeding season is upon us. Let’s leap into learning about frogs found in West Virginia. Do you speak frog? About 30 minutes. YPP
2:30 p.m.
Meet and Greet our Turtles
Join the naturalist to meet some of the nature center turtles, hear their story and perhaps a little about relatives found in the state of West Virginia. Includes a kid friendly craft for free. About 1 hour. YPP
SATURDAY, March 25, 2023
10:00 a.m. Stemwinder Trail Hike
Join the naturalists at the trailhead of Davis Trail (old stables/petting zoo) for a hike along three park trails in search of signs of spring. Boots recommended. This is a lovely morning hike. About 2 miles, 2 hours. YPP
1:30 p.m.
Snake Meet and Greet
Join the park naturalist for an up close and personal look at one of our West Virginia snakes!
Learn about other snakes found in the state, unique traits of snakes, the threats they face, and how snakes impact your life! Participants may pet the snake but not hold the snake. Please, be aware this program involves a live animal. However, you don’t have to get close. About 1 hour. YPP
2:30 p.m.
Bird Beak Adaption
How is the beak designed to help the bird specialize in their field? Join the naturalist to explore beak adaptions and perhaps make your own beak. About 45 minutes. YPP
SUNDAY, March 26, 2023
11:00 a.m.
Ramblin’ Ranger
The naturalist will be roving around the falls area with an interesting item. You’ll have an opportunity to guess what it is and talk about it and about the falls also? About 1 hour. YPP
1:00 p.m.
Creature Feature! White Tailed Deer
We frequently feature a creature at Blackwater Falls! Today we’ll learn about our local deer and perhaps make a plaster of Paris print to take home (weather permitting) About 1 hour. YPP
Programs and activities planned are open to overnight guests at Blackwater Falls and all public.
