Campfire, stargazing, and fireflies: Bluestone

Weekends at Bluestone State Park are extra special with activities that focus on the outdoors and nature pursuits. Join park naturalist and heritage craftsman Jonathan Lipscomb July 14-17, 2023 at these planned activities.

FRIDAY, July 14, 2023
3-5pm spoon carving
Join naturalist Jonathan at the shelter below the events building to learn local history and the basics of wooden making, *ypp

5-6pm primitive fire starting
Meet at the fire shelter behind the events building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting. Yes! We’ll start the campfire without matches or a lighter. Come see or to learn how. *ypp

7-9pm weekly campfire
We’re still at the fire shelter below the events building to swap stories, relax, and learn basic campfire cooking skills. Cast iron cooking yields some yummy eats. Servings are $2 each

9-10pm fireflies and astronomy
The best evening activities will be at the events building to watch the fireflies and the stars. DId you know there are over 20 species of fireflies in WV? And stars in the sky have stories and we’ll find constellations that we can see with our eyes. *ypp

SATURDAY, July 15, 2023
7-8pm tie dye
Join Jonathan at the pool to create a one of a kind souvenir. shirts are $10 for a park shirt, $5 if you bring your own.

SUNDAY, July 16, 2023
9am lets go fishing
Morning fishing is relaxing and we can learn about different types of fishing equipment at the fishing pier below the office. Bring your own equipment or borrow one of ours All ages are welcome to join, although ages 15 up require a license which can be found at wvfish.com *ypp

11am-12pm chalk art and giant bubbles
It’s time to be at the Old Mill bath house to make giant bubbles and your own chalk art. We mean these bubbles are giant!

1pm dip candles
Naturalist Lipscomb will be in the pines next to the Activities Building to make historic dip candles. All ages welcome. Lots of fun with little area history. $1 per candle exact change accepted on site or prepay at the office. *ypp

2:30pm Riverview Trail clean up
Meet at the pool to take a conservation hike along the lower sections of the riverview trail and help clean up the debris from our last high water event. The person who collects the most off the trail will win a pool pass. Thank you for coming to help and to keep Bluestone State Park looking good!

MONDAY, July 17, 2023
10am Eagle Point nature hike
Meet the naturalist at the overlook on Bluestone State Park entrance road to take a hike up the Eagle Point trail. This 1 mile each way trail is the newest on the park and ascends to a beautiful overlook above Rt 20. Long pants, closed toed shoes, and water are recommended. This is truly a lovely hike and view.

1pm owl diets
We’ll learn about owl diets today. Meet behind the events building to learn more about the local owl population while we dissect some owl pellets and discover what they like to eat. *ypp

*ypp are young people for parks programs. These programs are focused on fun education for ages 6-16. Although, all ages are welcome to attend.

** All children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult
