Bearwise. Archery. Winged Things: Holly River

July 27, 2023 July 29, 2023

Birds, bow and arrows, and moths dominate activities at Holly River State Park from July 27-29, 2023. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River.

THURSDAY, July 27, 2023
2 pm – BLACK BEARS
Learn new discoveries & fascinating facts about WV’s largest mammal. Shake hands with a bear paw & play a game to learn more! All ages are welcome. This is a great program to learn about how to be bear wise. Windy Gap Schoolyard (Old Pavilion if rainy) YPP

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. All ages welcome. A great opportunity to learn archery.

9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ MAPLE CAMPGROUND
Look for the illuminated white sheet; we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flyers. Moths!

FRIDAY, July 28 2023
10:30 am – BADMINTON & Frisbee Friday @ the Pool
Join Naturalist Jane at the badminton net behind the pool for a game, then cool off in the pool, catch Frisbees as you jump off the diving board.

2 pm – BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGE
Experience the hazards birds must face as you play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path to reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home? All ages have a blast completing this easy challenge. YPP

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office.

9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ HEMLOCK CAMPGROUND
Look for the illuminated white sheet; we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flyers.

SATURDAY, July 29, 2023
9 am – HIKE REVERIE TRAIL
Hike the Reverie Trail to Tecumseh Falls & back approx. 2 hrs with a
snack break & rest at the falls. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water & snacks. Hiking sticks or trek poles are helpful. Meet naturalist on office porch @ 9 or trailhead @ 9:15

2 pm – BUTTERFLIES & MOTHS
Learn the differences between these 2 amazing & short-lived flying insects, Color one to take home. You’ll discover some of these same winged-things at your home too. Meet at the Balli Shelter

4 pm – ARCHERY
Learn to hold a bow, load arrows, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the Holly River State Park office.

YPP –
Young People for Parks centers on environmental activities that encourage youth of ages 6 – 15 to get outdoors and explore nature. All these programs are FREE & open to the public . Ask the naturalist how to earn a YPP reward.
