Autumn is Awesome: Blackwater Falls

Autumn includes awesome views and planned activities at Blackwater Falls September 29 – October 1, 2023. Take advantage of a variety of things to do when you’re not leaf peeping or enjoying a great meal at the Smokehouse Restaurant located at Blackwater Falls Lodge.

FRIDAY, September 29, 2023
Nature Center Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

11:30 a.m. History and Hotdogs Campfire
Join the seasonal naturalist to enjoy the flames of an outdoor fire and roast a hotdog while he tells the history of the area. Songbooks available for campfire singing after the history talk. About 1 hour. YPP

1:00 p.m. Decoupage Mason Jar Candle
Make your own fall decorative jar or Blackwater Falls Souvenir. About 1 hour. craft fee $3.00

2:00 p.m. Feature Movie
Join the staff for this hilarious film about witches attempting to reclaim their youth. Rated PG. About 2 hours.

5:00 p.m. Ramblin’ Ranger– Creature Feature
Find the park naturalist in the lodge lobby for her display about the eastern coyote. Test your knowledge about coyotes, ask a question, pick up a trail map or simply stop to say hello. The naturalist will be set up for about 2 hours. YPP

Nature Center Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

9:00 a.m. Morning along the Lake
Join the park naturalist for an interpretive stroll along Pendleton Lake. What birds are around the lake? What plants are blooming? About 1/2 mile, about one hour. YPP

10:00 a.m. Scenic Overlook Nature Stroll
Join the seasonal naturalist at Pendleton Point Salt Sands Sign for an easy interpretive stroll around the overlook. About 1 hour. YPP

10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Twisted Tie Dye
Join the staff to be creative on your own souvenir t-shirt. Supplies lim ited. Sale price: $5.00 adult, $3.00 youth sizes.

11:30 a.m. Fossil Craft
Join the recreation assistant to hear about some fossils. In order to study the history of life on earth, paleontologists study fossil remains of the organisms that once lived here. Optional: This Fossil Find Activity invites participants to become paleontologists by finding and gently removing the sediment to expose real trilobite replicas or make their own fossil. This activity requires patience and time to uncover trilobites or create a fossil craft. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP

1:00 p.m. Bracelet Craft
Join the recreation attendant and create a bracelet. Choose from a fish hook to friendship to paracord to your passion to save the bees designs. Craft fee varies: $1.00 to $4.00

2:00 p.m. Naturalist Loop
Join the seasonal naturalist at the trailhead of Davis Trail for a walk along a portion of three trails: Davis, Spudder Track and Red Spruce. About 2 hours, 2 miles. YPP

2:30p.m. SSSSNakes of West Virginia
Join the park naturalist to hear about some snakes that call West Virginia home and why they should be your friend. Program may include a live non-venomous snake. About 1 hour. YPP

SUNDAY, October 1, 2023
Nature Center Hours: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

10:30 a.m. Finding Your Way
Join the naturalist for this program about how to use a map and compass with a short video and naturalist interpretation. Includes testing your skills on a short course around the nature center, learning about topographic maps, contour lines and more. About one hour. Afterwards Optional Craft: Create a compass using markers and other materials for a craft fee of $2.00 YPP
