Vernal Pool Monitoring Workshop: Cacapon

March 10, 2023 @ 11:00 am 4:00 pm

Join us at Cacapon Resort State Park to learn about vernal pools, the temporary wetlands that provide critical breeding habitat for amphibians and macroinvertebrates.

We will visit a pool near the training site, looking for wood frog and salamander egg masses, fairy shrimp, and more! Go home with the information, skills, and confidence you need to monitor vernal pools near you! This workshop begins at 11:00AM and concludes at 4:00PM on Friday, March 10, 2023. Naturalist Valerie Chaney and Allen Miller are your site hosts and encourage your attendance. Teachers and home school educators welcomed and any interested in assisting in monitoring of vernal pools as a citizen scientist.

Please register to attend by emailing Callie Cronin Sams at callie.c.sams@wv.gov.
There is no charge to attend.

What to wear or bring:
Wear warm layers appropriate for the weather. We will spend time outside. Please bring snacks, water, and a pen or pencil, and notebook. Polarized sunglasses if you have them. Footwear: We will not be entering the pool, but the path or trail leading to the pool may be wet, snowy, or muddy depending on the recent weather.

This workshop is a cooperative effort made possible by WVDEP Watershed Improvement Branch Save Our Streams program, WV Department of Environmental Protection, West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the USGS, the US Forest Service and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Other dates are planned at Elkins DNR Fox Forest on March 13, Kanawha State Forest on March 19, and Cranberry Mountain Nature Center on April 14, 2023. Callie C. Sams is the contact for Vernal Pool Monitoring Workshop information.
