Monarchs & More: Cacapon

Monarch Migration continues and also includes presentations by special guests of the Monarch Alliance at Cacapon State Park, September 23-26, 2022. Learn about monarch migration, the lifecycle of butterflies (fascinating), and more.. If you can’t attend the programs, do visit the nature center which is open daily Tuesday – Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. All programs start from the nature center unless indicated.

The CCC Boys: A West Virginia Legacy
The CCC boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed all over WV in the forests they planted and parks they helped to build. (30 min film)

Spirit of Cacapon
Meet at the Nature Center to take a short walk and discover how the CCC boys…the Civilian Conservation Corps left it’s mark on Cacapon.

Irish Road Bowling
Come out for a fun Irish tradition established as an official West Virginia sport (WVIRB.com), rolling a cannon ball on a designed course.

Badminton
Fun for the whole family. Park at the tennis court parking lot. LED lighted set.

Monarch Alliance Guest
Join Tess Dew, a member of the Monarch Alliance, part of the Potomac Valley Audubon Society for a talk on monarch life cycle, migration, & news. All ages welcome.

Monarch Migration
Learn all about the importance of a monarch way station by watching a video and taking a guided tour of the Monarch Way Station at the nature center. Discover the monarch caterpillars and their chrysalis. Followed by a trip to one of the park’s many wildflower meadows known as our pollinator zones to discover adult monarchs on their long migration to Mexico. Monarch tagging will be demonstrated.

Nature Center Open 11AM-3PM
During these hours drop in and learn about the park’s geology and experience the interactive geology exhibit.

Drop by and check out a variety of wildlife pelts….coyote, fox, and more!

The nature center is a great stop for all ages, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. Other West Virginia natural exhibits include an extensive taxidermy collection of wildlife- fish, birds, fox, bobcat, mountain lion, deer, elk, and eastern grey wolf! Also, hands-on sand displays for wildlife tracks and a new geology interactive map to design your own mountains, rivers and lakes.
