To most people, pets are part of the family, so why should you have to leave part of your family home when you take a vacation? You’ll be happy to know the folks at West Virginia’s state parks and forests share this sentiment, and that’s why we’ve set aside special pet-friendly accommodations for you and your furry best friend.
Pet ownership and pet travel are on the rise in the United States, according to a 2017-2018 survey conducted by American Pet Products Association. Sixty-eight percent of U.S. households now keep a pet, an increase of 56 percent since 1988. And about 37 percent of pet owners travel with their pets every year, up from 19 percent a decade ago.
As more pet owners travel with their pals, more pet-friendly lodging is becoming available for them. At West Virginia state parks and forests, select cabins, cottages and lodge rooms have been designated pet-friendly. Pets also are welcome at our campgrounds.
Promoting a ‘Pawsitive’ Experience
To make the most out of traveling with your buddy, here are a few rules that must be observed, as well as some handy tips.
- Dogs and cats are the only pets permitted in state parks and forests.
- Pets must be current on vaccinations and in good health.
- Guests are expected to clean up after their pets. Use a designated pet walking area if available.
- Make sure your pet’s collar has an I.D. tag with your contact information.
- Pets must be leashed and restrained.
Park Pup Events
If you plan on hiking, bring enough water for the both of you. While most dogs love to play in creeks and drink from mud puddles, there may not always be a water source nearby.
