Happy National Dog Day!
Celebrated annually on August 26, National Dog Day was established for people to recognize the importance of dogs and how they impact their lives on a daily basis.
Man’s best friend has been a faithful companion to us for generations, so why not reward them for their loyalty? Treat your pup to a visit to a West Virginia state park, where the two of you can explore endless miles of trails and splash in the rippling mountain streams.
‘Ruffing’ it
Is your pup a water dog? He’ll love Beech Fork, Tygart Lake or Bluestone state parks, where he can paddle in the lake or ride shotgun on your boat. Or you’re your buddy camping at Audra State Park where the two of you can play fetch in the beautiful Middle Fork River.
Do you and your mutt like to explore challenging trails? Parks like North Bend and Watoga, as well as Kanawha State Forest offer dozens of miles of single-track winding through the woods and climbing up hillsides.
Dogs are welcome at all our state parks and forests. If you’re planning an overnight stay, make sure you book a pet-friendly cabin, cottages or lodge room. Pets also may stay at our campgrounds.

Safety measures
We want you and your dog to stay safe and have great time at our parks, so please observe the following rules and recommendations:
- Pets must be current on vaccinations and in good health.
- Always clean up after your pet and pack out any trash you generate.
- Dogs must be leashed and restrained, even on trails. This is for their own safety as well as others.
- In case he gets loose, make sure your dog’s collar has an I.D. tag with your contact information.
- When hiking, bring enough water for the both of you. There may not always be a water source nearby.
As the country continues to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak, please remember to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from others and wash your hands frequently. Governor Jim Justice has mandated that masks be worn indoors in places where social distancing is not possible.
