We think our parks are the best. But don’t just take our word for it. Take a look at these glowing reviews on TripAdvisor, from folks who recently visited a West Virginia state park and forest. If you’re looking for ideas on what to do and where to go this spring, why not see what a fellow traveler has to say?
‘Absolutely beautiful location plus birds and wildflowers’
“We visited Babcock State Park as part of Wildflower Weekend 2018. As novice ornithologists we really appreciated the knowledge of our guide Sean P. He guided us on a nature walk the previous day at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park. While the weather turned cold, there was still plenty to see. The Glade Creek Grist Mill is one of the most beautiful settings I have ever seen. I would have no problem visiting in other seasons for opportunities.” — , Indiana
‘Fantastic resort’
“I arrived at Pipestem Resort State Park right at sunset and was treated to the magnificent sight of the sun sinking into darkness over the river and rolling hills. In the morning, it was dawn over the beautiful West Virginia hill country, with deer grazing on the grounds. The room was clean, incredibly quiet, and very reasonably priced. It doesn’t get any better than that.” — Steve H., Colorado
‘No hiking skills needed’
“Amazing views at Blackwater Falls State Park. Even though there are trails for miles, if you’re just wanting the views and can’t take intense walking, you’re in luck. Big time. The waterfall is so powerful. It is equivalent to an airliner jet engine in its pounding/noise. The mist in the air is another example of the this waterfall. It’s worth the trip if you’re within 2 hours of the area.” — NCTraveler8674, North Carolina
‘Father/son time’
“I took my son to the Chief Logan State Park to fish and camp. The people at the check-in office were extremely helpful and nice. The pond is stocked with bass, trout catfish. Nice pond, decent size. The camp sites are wonderful and reasonably priced. Very well maintained. Quiet and peaceful. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys being outdoors. Hiking, fishing, camping and it has a museum with some great local history.” — Sailor W, West Virginia
‘Beautiful everywhere!’
“My wife and I went to North Bend State Park with her parents and stayed in a cabin. We brought our German Shepherd and he had a blast on the trails and around the cabin. There are trails everywhere to hike and enjoy. The North Bend Rail Trail is neat. I found out my father worked on the actual railroad back in the ’70s and now it’s gone. The trail had neat tunnels and runs from Clarksburg to Parkersburg. A very easy walk as my father-in-law is 70 and walked it just fine. The cabin was awesome and we had the fireplace roaring all weekend.” — coacht2014, West Virginia
‘Camping World should open up a store near this location’
“Twin Falls Resort State Park is a great spot for camping. The people are friendly and helpful. Interesting hiking trails and the falls are nice. The lodge is welcoming with a nice gift shop and restaurant. The highlight has to be the Pioneer Farm with a good family living there who has wonderful plans to share with future visitors. I almost forgot to mention that the are cleaner and nicer than a lot of hotels.” – Steve S., West Virginia
‘Great place to watch sunsets’
“If you are traveling through the area or close to Morgantown, this is a must see! Coopers Rock State Forest offers so much, including hiking trails, camping, and amazing views. I don’t go to the main overlook often; I prefer the hike out to Ravens Rock. This is such a great place to watch the sunset. Bring some snacks and drinks, sit on the rocks and watch the sun go down. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.” — , West Virginia
‘Girls weekend getaway’
“We rented a cabin at Beech Fork State Park for our annual girls’ weekend. The cabin was spacious, attractive and clean. We were very pleased with it and would definitely stay there again. The weather was pretty cool so we didn’t spend much time outdoors. However, it was located near the places we wanted to visit while in that area. We drove to the Beech Fork Dam and marina, ate at Hillbilly Hot Dogs and went to The Lost Escape Room in Huntington. We took our picture with the pink elephant in Barboursville and the giraffe in Huntington. While at the cabin we played games and watched a movie. It was a great, quiet getaway cabin.” — Diane S. ‘We love this park’
“18 hole golf course, 23 miles hiking trails, horseback riding, nature center, paddle boats, lake beach — I’ve been going to Cacapon Resort State Park since I was a kid. My husband proposed here. Drive up to the overlook; it is breathtaking. West Virginia state parks are beautiful.” — Erin M (no location )
‘My personal favorite view in the Eastern United States’
“We got to the overlook at Hawks Nest State Park around noon on a rainy West Virginia day. The hills were shrouded in some of the most picturesque fog you can ever imagine. The whole scene was just a postcard. I proclaimed at that very spot that it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in the eastern part of the country. The overlook is an easy stop on the Midland Trail National Scenic Byway. For those with more time, and interest, Hawks Nest offers several recreational opportunities, such as hiking and boating.” — Stijn-traveler, Belgium
Overnight stay—will definitely return
“My husband and I decided to change things up and travel Old Route 50 to D.C. for the weekend knowing Tygart Lake State Park would be the last chance for lodging that evening. The lodge is lake front with beautiful views of the lake. The front desk clerk was beyond hospitable and friendly and the room was very nice, updated, clean and cozy. The cabins are lakefront with some having a great view but the campground sits away from the view. There is a nice marina offering boat, jet ski, paddle board, etc. rentals. Plenty of hiking and bike trails. We will plan an extended stay in the future. Very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. All accommodations are very reasonably priced. Close access to stores and restaurants in Grafton.” — Dejavu4wv (no location )
