Plan a Last-Minute Getaway to these 4 WV State Parks

Blackwater Falls

Some say that planning a vacation at the last minute means missing out on the full experience. In West Virginia, we say that the experience is all about you! It’s hard to pick from all of the must-visit destinations in West Virginia, so we made your list easier when it comes to choosing one (or more) of the Mountain State’s beautiful array of state parks.

This summer, let your spontaneous side thrive and plan a last-minute getaway at these four West Virginia State Parks.

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls State Park offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure in the heart of Tucker County. This state park gets its name from the amber waters of Blackwater Falls, a 57-foot cascade tinted by the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles. Check yourself in on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail for a chance to win waterfall-themed prizes! For unbeatable views, explore Lindy Point and Pendleton Point Overlook.

The Blackwater Falls State Park lodge offers 51 comfortable rooms with sweeping views of the densely forested gorge below. Choose from 39 fully-furnished cabins set in a wooded area near the lodge. These cabins offer absolute peace. The park’s 13 vacation cabins sit on the park’s north side, down the road from the falls.

On your way to the falls, snap a picture on the Almost Heaven swing!

Bonus: Fairfax Stone State Park

Eglon, West Virginia

Did you know there’s a state park dedicated to a rock? Fairfax Stone State Park is just 20 minutes away from Blackwater Falls. This quiet state park comprises four acres, named after the Fairfax Stone, a surveyor’s marker and boundary stone used in the 1700s to settle a dispute over land in the English colonies of Maryland and Virginia. Just continue north on Route 219 or Seneca Trail and make a slight right turn onto Kenston Road. Turn right onto Fairfax Stone Road and continue for about two miles. You will eventually come to a loop where the stone lies.

Camp Creek State Park and Forest

Camp Creek State Park and Forest is known for beautiful waterfalls and scenic camping. With nearly 6,000 acres of lush forest, 35 miles of trails and seven miles of seasonally stocked trout streams, this gem has something for everyone to enjoy. The Ranger Outpost Cabin is perfect for anyone looking for a picturesque, secluded mountain retreat, accessed via a relaxing 3.3–mile hike into the forest, leading to beautiful views and outdoor adventures. Camp Creek has four campgrounds, including picnic tables, grills and fire rings.

Lost River State Park

Lost River State Park calls all nature enthusiasts who love serene wooded acres. Explore nearly 4,000 acres of uninterrupted beauty, which includes a scenic 1.5-mile hike on White Oak Trail, which leads to Cranny Crow Overlook on top of Big Ridge Mountain. Make your adventure a getaway in one of the state park’s 26 cabins, 10 of which are pet-friendly.

You also have the option to reserve a campsite and pitch a tent under the stars. Enjoy amenities such as a public shelter, campfire ring, picnic table and latrines on site. You won’t want to camp anywhere else after a night spent in the great outdoors here.

Twin Falls Resort State Park

Set on a high, wooded ridge in the rugged mountains of Wyoming County in southern West Virginia, Twin Falls Resort State Park is perfect for those obsessed with nature and beautiful views. Twin Falls is home to more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails, an 18-hole golf course and cozy accommodations. The park features the Pioneer Farm, which offers visitors a glimpse of life on the frontier. The park features 50 campsites, 25 of which have electric hookups.

Are you looking to get a break from the outside? Settle in for a comfortable stay at the 47-room mountaintop lodge. Take advantage of its full-service restaurant, conference spaces and gift shop as they are all on-site. Lodge guests can also access the indoor pool, hot tub and a 24-hour fitness center.
