SUMMARY:It’s all about the Nature: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:Take advantage of activities planned September 22 – 25\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls. A variety of things to do when you’re not leaf peeping or enjoying a great meal at the Smokehouse Restaurant located at Blackwater Falls Lodge. Don’t miss the live music of the Michael Christopher Band. \nFRIDAY\, September 22\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. CHERRY LANE HIKE – It’s a WonderFALL HikeJoin the naturalist at Sled Run Fire Circle to enter a cathedral-like hardwood forest and earn West Virginia State Park Wonderfall hiking patch. The lycopodium and moss covered forest floor add a touch of green color throughout the year. \nEnjoy listening to and observing Birds of Blackwater Falls: brown creepers\, black capped chickadee and woodpeckers as the naturalists interpret the forest and bogs found along our travels. This jaunt is about 11⁄2 miles. The trail doesn’t change much in elevation but contains roots\, rocks and short inclines that can be muddy so boots and hiking/walking sticks are recommended. We pace ourselves. Please\, dress appropriately for the weather. If you show\, we go unless safety is an issue. Plan on about 90 minutes of time from start to conclusion. This program meets the Young People for Parks activity requirements. \n1:00 p.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin us for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00 \n3:00 p.m. PEPPERONI ROLLS & FLAMESJoin the seasonal naturalist\, to have fun with hot sparks \, perhaps some Trivia\, singing and storytelling. About 1-1/2 hours. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\,Thursday\, September 28\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity. DESCRIPTION:Join a hike to the remote location of the former town of Spruce\, led by Naturalist Jaime Shearer at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. This hike combines hiking and historic interpretation of this fascinating site. \nMeet at the Cass Company Store Front Porch at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday\, September 30\, 2023. There is no fee to participate. \nShearer gives a brief orientation about the hike and directions to the drive to the starting point to start the hike. The drive takes approximately 15 minutes. Hikers are responsible for transportation. The hike duration is about three hours in length and approximately 4 miles of beginning-level hiking. Please wear comfortable and sturdy hiking boots or shoes and dress for the weather. \nAbout Spruce:Founded in 1904\, Spruce was once a bustling company town home to 300 people but was abandoned in the 1950s – while not a single building stands today\, the historic footprint of logging remains. You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Pocahontas County while learning about the region’s timber and railroad industries and life in a rural company town. DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full harvest moon at Cass on September 30\, 2023. \nThe “Full Harvest Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center at the Cass Company Store. This evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nThe September full moon is known as the Full Harvest Moon. Most often\, the September full Moon is the Harvest Moon which is the Full Moon that occurs closest to the Fall Equinox. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Sunday\, October 1\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. October 6 and October 7\, 2023\, as you board the Island Belle sternwheeler at Civitan Park in Belpre\, Ohio\, you begin your journey to Blennerhassett Island where an enchanted world only known to Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett existed over 200 years ago. Mansion by Candlelight on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park returns to the island in 2023. \nMany friends of the Blennerhassetts have gathered on the island for a wonderful evening of entertainment and you will also be a guest at the home of Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett. Transformed into an 18th-century party\, Blennerhassett Island and its magnificent mansion are illuminated by hundreds of candles and lantern boxes. \nDocents\, dressed in the style of the period\, will welcome you. The soft glow of candlelight will weave a mesmerizing spell ‘round about you as you listen to the music\, see 18th-century dances\, or watch a lively game of cards\, before strolling outside to enjoy the many planned activities on the island. \nWhile on the island\, plan to take a horse-drawn wagon ride\, visit the gift shop\, and warm yourself by an inviting bonfire at the servants’ party where another spirited party is going on. At the servants’ party you will hear Appalachian music\, see clogging\, watch apple butter being made\, and hear haunting stories of local folklore. All the evening’s excitement will likely make you hungry. \nA special candlelight “harvest supper” (picnic style meal) consisting of apple and rosemary roasted turkey\, sage and celery dressing\, mashed potatoes with roasted turkey gravy\, garden salad\, fresh snap beans\, cranberry sauce\, rolls\, and dessert offerings of apple or pumpkin pie\, with choice of coffee\, tea or water. SUMMARY:Youth Environmental Conference: Cacapon
DESCRIPTION:Are you a youth (age 13-18) thinking of going into an environmental profession? Are you ready for this year’s Youth Challenge? Join us for the 48th annual weekend of learning at the 2023 Youth Environmental Conference at Cacapon State Park\, October 6 – 8\, 2023. \nThe weekend includes speakers in the environmental field\, tours of environmental industry and places of interest in the area. Among the activities planned for this year’s conference is a Saturday field trip with stops at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park\, Cool Spring Nature Preserve and Ridge State Fish Hatchery. The weekend also will feature environmental programs and guest speakers. \nThe weekend focuses is for middle school and high school students\, 13 – 18 years of age. Youth Environmental Program Scholarships are available as well as enrolling with a direct registration fee. \nThe Youth Environmental Conference and Program is made possible by the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) outreach programs. October 6 and October 7\, 2023\, as you board the Island Belle sternwheeler at Civitan Park in Belpre\, Ohio\, you begin your journey to Blennerhassett Island where an enchanted world only known to Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett existed over 200 years ago. Mansion by Candlelight on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park returns to the island in 2023. \nMany friends of the Blennerhassetts have gathered on the island for a wonderful evening ofentertainment and you will also be a guest at the home of Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett. Transformed into an 18th-century party\, Blennerhassett Island and its magnificent mansion are illuminated by hundreds of candles and lantern boxes. \nDocents\, dressed in the style of the period\, will welcome you. The soft glow of candlelight will weave a mesmerizing spell ‘round about you as you listen to the music\, see 18th-century dances\, or watch a lively game of cards\, before strolling outside to enjoy the many planned activities on the island. \nWhile on the island\, plan to take a horse-drawn wagon ride\, visit the gift shop\, and warm yourself by an inviting bonfire at the servants’ party where another spirited party is going on. At the servants’ party you will hear Appalachian music\, see clogging\, watch apple butter being made\, and hear haunting stories of local folklore. All the evening’s excitement will likely make you hungry. \nA special candlelight “harvest supper” (picnic style meal) consisting of apple and rosemary roasted turkey\, sage and celery dressing\, mashed potatoes with roasted turkey gravy\, garden salad\, fresh snap beans\, cranberry sauce\, rolls\, and dessert offerings of apple or pumpkin pie\, with choice of coffee\, tea or water. DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, October 7\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity.
