There’s plenty to see at the nature hub OR if you’re looking for some things to do or to attend like ultimate frisbee\, moth night\, hikes and live music\, July 31 – August 6\, 2023\, we welcome your attendance. \nMonday\, July 31\, 2023 \n10:00 am-Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. \n11:00 am- Lake Dip *YPPMeet at the pedestrian bridge near McKeever Lodge for a walk to Long Branch Lake. Who knows what critters we might catch! \n2:00 pm- Ultimate FrisbeeMeet at the Campground Store to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee is a teamsport which mixes elements of football\, basketball\, and rugby\, substituting the ball with a flying discand the referee with the spirit of the game. (1hour) \nTuesday\, August 1\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Taxidermy Talk *YPPCome by the Nature Center to learn about some of West Virginia’s native wildlife\, see our taxidermycollection\, and touch authentic animal pelts. \n1:00 pm Creepy Crawly Bug Craft *YPPJoin staff at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a craft showcasing the various insects crawling and flying around outside. (40 minutes) \n3:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. \n5:00 pm- Firefly Friends *YPPEnjoy the magic of fireflies by creating this cute craft\, which will leave you with a firefly friend without taking the real thing out of nature. Join us as we show how\, with just a few standard craft items you can have a firefly friend year round. \nWednesday\, August 2\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Deer Talk Time *YPPJoin us at the activities shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about deer. We will talk about the different signs and behaviors of adult white-tailed deer and give participants a chance to touch a deer pelt. Additionally\, we will discuss what to do if you come across a fawn in the wild. \n1:00 pm- Plaster Tracks *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to make a plaster animal track.Drying times may vary due to weather conditions\, so please allow a minimum of 30 minutes for your track to dry and be ready to take home. \n4:00 pm- Shaving Cream PaintingMeet at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to create a fun painted craft to take home. This craft is fun for kids and kids at heart. Make sure to wear your “play” clothes as the craft can get messy. (30 min) \n9:15 pm- Moth Night *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for some moth watching. There will be a black light and white sheet set up to attract the moths. Bring a flashlight and a chair if you like and don’t forget your camera to capture your moth moments. In the event of rain the program may be canceled. YPP \nThursday\, August 3\, 2023 \n10:00 am- North Side Trail: *YPPMeet us at the shelter beside Park headquarters for a hike along the North Side Trail. \n1:00 pm- Hummingbirds: Magic in the Air *YPPMeet at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn some interesting facts about our favorite little feathered friends. \n4:30 pm- Pond Walk *YPPJoin us at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center following the for a short walk to the pond to see what amphibians and other critters call the pond home. \n8:00pm- Go Batty for Bats *YPPCute or creepy\, bats are an important part of our environment. Join us at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about some of WV’s native bat species and ways that they support our ecosystem. \nFriday\, August 4\, 2023 \n4:00 pm- What Should I Bring? *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a talk about what you should take with you when you explore the great outdoors. (40 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \n7:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPFind us at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. No matches involved. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \n7:00 – 9:00 pm – Live Music!Corey Lee McQuadeOutside of the Black Bear Lounge @ Pipestem Resort State Park. Appalachian/Americana folk-style bluegrass\, country\, blues\, and more\, all in one. \nNATURE FACT: 80% of snake bite victims get bitten while pestering the snake. DESCRIPTION:The 16th annual Art-in-the-Park series is a juried art fair that provides public access to fine artisans located in the Berkeley Springs region of West Virginia. DESCRIPTION:“COAL” is the August theater production staged and performed at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater at Chief Logan State Park. The drama begins at 8:30 p.m. This outdoor theater drama is presented nine evenings in August\, 2023. \nAccording to www.thearacomastoryinc.com\, “COAL” transports you to the coal mines of Logan\, West Virginia\, during the Great Mine Wars and the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921. SUMMARY:Blackbird Knob Hike: Canaan Valley
DESCRIPTION:The Blackbird Knob Hike is special and for eight hikers a great day for a long hike at Canaan Valley Resort.  Beginning at 9:00am and returning by 4:00pm\, this hike requires advance registration.  This Blackbird Knob Hike also falls on National Trails Day.  \nParticipants will be shuttled to the walk area. The hike is physically challenging as we will encounter rough terrain and water crossings. According to Dave Vance\, hike coordinator  “We will view vistas\, high meadows\, and spectacular views. It’s is a great longer distance hike.” \nWaterproof shoes or boots\, and clothing for changing weather conditions are suggested. Please pack a lunch\, snacks or water. Walk is approximately 6 miles in length and is not recommended for smaller children. Pre-Registration Required by Friday at 10:00 am at the Beech Club is necessary.  The hike fee is $15 per person. DESCRIPTION:The NASA Stardome-Stories in the Sky! is back at Blackwater Falls State Park nature center on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023. There are four 45 minute programs that occur inside the dome\, which is inside the nature center. Those times are 1:00 p.m.\, 2:30 p.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:00 p.m. There is no fee to participate\, but there is a preregistration opportunity to be sure you have a seat inside the dome. \nNASA STARDOME-STORIES IN THE SKY! participants enter the star dome through a short tunnel and introduced to a “star-filled” sky. Your host naturalist will navigate with the use of a digital planetarium through some common constellations and stars. Participants will be introduced to Greek Mythological characters\, how ancient people related to constellations\, then used their imagination to create a pattern in the stars with a story. About 45 minutes. Seating inside the dome is limited to first come first serve. Pre-registration available beginning at 11 a.m. on August 19th morning or take a chance that space is available and show up at time of program. About 45 minutes. The activity is for any age. YPP. [This activity is super helpful when you’re out on a dark night looking up at stars and identifying constellations\, etc.]And now the rest of the scheduled activities for the weekend of August 19-20\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park. DESCRIPTION:Note: This event has been rescheduled for October 28\, 2023 as part of  the “Mysterious Moon” special program. \nMake your own bat box from a precut kit to take home. Participants will use a screw driver and wood screws to assemble boxes together. Instructor Sam Muncy will be available to assist with assembly. A template and instructions for cutting and making more boxes will be handed out along with some information about how to attract bats. \nView a PowerPoint presentation of bats and bat colonies across West Virginia and the United States. Bats are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats can eat up to 1\,200 mosquitoes an hour. DESCRIPTION:The variety of scheduled activities for August 21 – 24\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park is open to the public and for all ages. Activities are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. The Nature Center is open Sunday – Friday from 10:30AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM-7:00PM. The boathouse is open 10:30AM – 5:00PM Wednesday – Sunday until Labor Day and closed on Monday and Tuesday\, except on a holiday. \nMONDAY\, August 21\, 2023 \n10:45 a.m. CRAFT TIME!Join the staff for their choice of universe themed craft. YPP \n2:00 p.m. GINGERBREAD MAN CRAFTJoin the staff to decorate a cardboard gingerbread man for $1.00. \nTUESDAY\, August 22\, 2023 \n11:00 a.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin the recreation assistant for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie JurassicPark!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! .The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommend- ed for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00 \n1:00 p.m.. WILDLIFE OBSERVATION WALK & CRAFTJoin the attendant as we explore different habitats in search of wildlife and plants around the nature center. About 45 minutes. About 45 minutes. \nWEDNESDAY\, August 23\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. AMPHIBIANS OF THE WOODSJoin the park naturalist at Sled Run fire circle to walk into the woods in search of amphibians that call it home. Learn how to protect these sensitive critters and more. Sturdy shoes required. Snakes will be looked at but not handled. About 1 hour. YPP \n1:00 p.m. TODDLER TIMEJoin the naturalist for a reading of a book. About 15 minutes. YPP \n2:00 p.m. The BEE MOVIE & CANDLE MAKINGJoin the naturalist to create a candle then watch a movie while it solidifies. Craft fee: $4.00. About 1.5 hours. SUMMARY:Farm-to-Table Outdoor Dinner: North Bend
DESCRIPTION:A delicious Farm-to-Table dinner at North Bend State Park is scheduled for Thursday\, August 24\, 2023. This evening event is staged at Shelter #4 located near North Bend Lodge. A half moon will illuminate the evening casting 50% moonshine over the grounds. A popular dining experience\, you’ll want to make reservations in advance for this year’s event. \nThe growing season’s yield of locally sourced garden produce and products\, this event is held outdoors and has limited reservations to assure attention to detail\, quality and presentation. \nOur menu for 2023 starts with loaded potato soup and a refreshing kale salad.  The main course will be farm raised chicken with peach-cucumber salsa\, fall off the bone BBQ pork ribs\, locally grown Mexican street corn\, cheesy smashed potatoes and homemade rolls with cinnamon butter. Dessert is the finale with a summer fruit salad with homemade whipped cream\, and cinnamon and brown sugar apple crisp.
