If the weather is cooperative\, some wind but not too much wind and the humidity is right\, we can make bubbles that are Goliath’s. DESCRIPTION:Learning about creatures that slither or swim\, hiking\, and bird crafts dominate activities at Holly River State Park from August 3-5\, 2023. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River. Activities at Holly River State Park are free to attend and open to the public and our cabin and camping guests. \nTHURSDAY\, August 3\, 20232 pm – SNAKES: Which 2 are venomous?Learn to identify WV’s only 2 venomous snakes\, with authentic replicas of the Copperhead & Eastern Rattlesnake\, and learn how helpful all our reptiles can be. Windy Gap yard \n4 pm – CREEK CRITTERSWear water shoes or old tennis shoes – we’ll be looking for larvae of insects under rocks & examining them under magnification\, talking about their life cycles & learning which ones indicate clean water. Find naturalist Jane in Windy Gap schoolyard down by the creek. \nFRIDAY\, August 4\, 202310 am – HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL with Naturalist Jane.Wear sturdy shoes & bring water. A hiking stick or trek poles are also useful. Meet on the office porch @ 9:45 am or at the trailhead bridge below Cabin 9 at 10 am. (1.5 miles/ 2 hours) \n2 pm – VERY FISHYLearn the parts of a fish\, fold an origami fish to take home\, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. Meet the naturalist in the Old Pavilion. This activity is for all ages. Fun folding paper into fish and then visiting the rearing pond! \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the Holly River State Park office. \n7:30 pm – WANDERING MINSTRELNaturalist Jane will serenade you with old mountain ballads or WV songs or your requests if she knows them. SUMMARY:Intro to Spinning for Adults: Prickett’s Fort
DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at spinning wool at Prickett’s Fort State Park. Participants will receive one hour of personal one-on-one instruction from one of our skilled interpreters on Friday\, August 4 or Saturday\, August 5\, 2023. \nOne-hour sessions are $20 per person and participants must be age 16 and older. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Chief Logan State Park Lodge are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, August 4\, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The educational birds program is a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis afternoon program is about raptors that are native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Twin Falls State Park are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis evening program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged in Shelter No. 4. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. SUMMARY:Blackbird Knob Hike: Canaan Valley
DESCRIPTION:The Blackbird Knob Hike is special and for eight hikers a great day for a long hike at Canaan Valley Resort.  Beginning at 9:00am and returning by 4:00pm\, this hike requires advance registration.  This Blackbird Knob Hike also falls on National Trails Day.  \nParticipants will be shuttled to the walk area. The hike is physically challenging as we will encounter rough terrain and water crossings. According to Dave Vance\, hike coordinator  “We will view vistas\, high meadows\, and spectacular views. It’s is a great longer distance hike.” \nWaterproof shoes or boots\, and clothing for changing weather conditions are suggested. Please pack a lunch\, snacks or water. Walk is approximately 6 miles in length and is not recommended for smaller children. Pre-Registration Required by Friday at 10:00 am at the Beech Club is necessary.  The hike fee is $15 per person.
