DESCRIPTION:Things with wings dominate activities at Holly River State Park from July 20 to 23\, 2023. And it is National Moth Week and on four evenings Holly River has a moth watch. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River. \nTHURSDAY\, July 20\, 20232 pm – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly census. Naturalist Jane will be in the Windy Gap Schoolyard (we’ll use the Balli Shelter if it’s rainy.) Did you know there are more than 20 different species of fireflies in West Virginia? Let’s find out which ones make their home at Holly River. \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. \n9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ Campground 1 Look for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flying insects. \nFRIDAY\, July 21\, 202310 am – HIKE SALT LICK TRAILHike with naturalist Jane. (1.2 miles/1hr) Meet on the office porch before 10\, or at the trailhead by cabins at 10:10. An easy hike except for the short uphill climb. Wear sturdy shoes. Hiking sticks are useful. \n2 pm – BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGEExperience the hazards birds must face as You play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. YPP \nAbout Sheldon Owen.Sheldon is originally from Mississippi and attended Mississippi State University\, then University of Georgia\, and West Virginia University in his academic pursuits. His studies focused on the ecology of forest dwelling bats\, forest management and raccoon ecology. He has served as a Wildlife Disease Biologist for the National Wildlife Disease Program within USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services and Supervisory Wildlife Biologist for the South Carolina Program of Wildlife Services. Sheldon is currently the Wildlife Extension Specialist for the WVU Extension Service. He welcomes questions from the audience about bats\, wildlife\, career paths and the more nocturnal creatures in West Virginia. \n8:00 p.m. Creature Feature-Fireflies!The harbingers of summer in West Virginia are Lightning Bugs! These nocturnal flashers light up the night typically from May until August and can be identified to species by their unique flash pattern and color. The production is free and open to the public.Shakespeare tells the tale of the lying\, manipulative\, and murderous Richard III and his path to the English throne. The drama begins at 8:30 p.m. This outdoor theater drama is presented nine evenings in July\, 2023. \nAccording to www.thearacomastoryinc.come website\, this smash Off-Broadway hit takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom\, where we meet Betty Jean\, Cindy Lou\, Missy\, and Suzy: four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts! Join us!! \nFRIDAY\, July 28\, 202310:00am. – “BE A FRIEND TO POLLINATORS”Pollinators are in trouble! Bees\, bats and other animal pollinators face many challenges in the modern world. Habitat loss\, disease\, parasites\, and environmental contaminants have all contributed to the decline of many species of pollinators. Meet at the Amphitheater area to learn how you can help. Program will last around 30 minutes. This program will not be canceled due to rain. (YPP) Lead by Ace England Our Summer Naturalist\, Ace is new to the game but is very excited to lead and learn about the natural world. Participants will receive a handout with information on how you can help pollinators and also a seed packet containing seeds to get your own garden started. \n12:00pm. – “FALLS TRAIL HIKE”Hike\, stroll\, or walk whichever is best for you. Meet at the Falls Trail parking lot located near the front entrance of the park to visit both the Foley Falls and the Blackfork Falls and get a look at the two famous falls that was the namesake to “Twin Falls’ Resort State Park. This is aloop trail and is 1 ¼ mile long very rocky along the bottom portion of the trail\, the trail tends to hold water so it can be muddy and soft in areas. Wear sturdy boots\, bring some water and bug spray and join us. (YPP) Lead by Ace England Summer Naturalist. \n2:00pm – 4:00pm NATURE CENTER r will be open. \nSATURDAY\, July 29\, 202312:00pm. “SOLAR OVENS”Bring the kids to Shelter 4 to make solar ovens with Ace our Summer Naturalist. The solar oven you build in this activity is a relatively simple one made from a pizza box\, aluminum foil\, plastic wrap\, and a sheet of paper. Parents are encouraged to help in the activity. To 4:00pm. – NATURE CENTER will be open. \n5:00pm. “SUMMER BUTTERFLIES”Did you know that the earliest known butterfly fossils date from approximately 40 to 50 million years ago? That’s a really long time ago and these beautiful insects are very much carrying on their genes year after year for hopefully millions more. \nWest Virginia hosts 138 species of butterflies. Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. DESCRIPTION:All will be aglow this summer evening at Twin Falls Resort State Park. The magic starts at 8:30 p.m. \nThe Glow Walk begins and meets at the park amphitheater. Arrival for you to park your vehicle should occur by 8:00 p.m. but not before 7:30 p.m. We’ll get a glow stick to each person (as supplies last) and get prepared for this go-glow evening. \nThe glow walk starts at 8:30 p.m. and will go from the amphitheater area toward the campground and return. Getting headlights off and our eyes adjusting to the evening is key to great fun. Please consider bringing your own glow sticks or bracelets\, to make it more festive. Dimmer style flashlights with red cellophane over the lens can also be useful. \nOn July 29th the moon is more than 82% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. \nThis is a dusk and after dark activity. It is magical as night falls and people are walking and talking together by some moonlight. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. Learn seasonal constellations and other cool facts about the night sky. Planets Mars\,Mercury\, and Saturn may be visible. The moon is a Waxing Gibbous moon at 88% illumination. Moon pies are available as snacks. \nAbout Delta AquaridsAccording to NASA\, the Southern Delta Aquariids are active beginning in mid-July and are visible until late August with the peak on July 29-31. The meteor count is approximately 20 meteors per hour and a velocity of 25 (41 km) per second. Who knows what critters we might catch! \n2:00 pm- Ultimate FrisbeeMeet at the Campground Store to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee is a teamsport which mixes elements of football\, basketball\, and rugby\, substituting the ball with a flying discand the referee with the spirit of the game. Activities at Holly River State Park are free to attend and open to the public and our cabin and camping guests. \nTHURSDAY\, August 3\, 20232 pm – SNAKES: Which 2 are venomous?Learn to identify WV’s only 2 venomous snakes\, with authentic replicas of the Copperhead & Eastern Rattlesnake\, and learn how helpful all our reptiles can be. Windy Gap yard \n4 pm – CREEK CRITTERSWear water shoes or old tennis shoes – we’ll be looking for larvae of insects under rocks & examining them under magnification\, talking about their life cycles & learning which ones indicate clean water. Find naturalist Jane in Windy Gap schoolyard down by the creek. \nFRIDAY\, August 4\, 202310 am – HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL with Naturalist Jane.Wear sturdy shoes & bring water. A hiking stick or trek poles are also useful. Meet on the office porch @ 9:45 am or at the trailhead bridge below Cabin 9 at 10 am. (1.5 miles/ 2 hours) \n2 pm – VERY FISHYLearn the parts of a fish\, fold an origami fish to take home\, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. Meet the naturalist in the Old Pavilion.
