DESCRIPTION:It’s dinner and a show at Hawks Nest State Park\, Friday\, March 3\, 2023. Elvis is in the building and the performer is Lee Dean. \nPerformer Lee Dean livens up an audience with music\, a little comedy\, and a whole lot of fun for all ages. His outstanding Elvis and maybe a little Sinatra pays tributes to both men. The 7:00PM show will be in the conference room. Dinner will be at 6:00PM in the park restaurant\, ‘Overlook at the Gorge’. \nThe overnight package includes dinner and show for two individuals and breakfast\, all taxes and gratuities. Overnight cost is $200. Dinner and show only for two individuals\, $85 and includes taxes and gratuities. \nThe evening includes dancing\, a selfie station for photo taking\, and hearing some classic Elvis songs. Enjoy nature\, drama\, tracking\, and history in outdoor and indoor settings at Lore & Tracking Weekend. \nFRIDAY\, March 3\, 2023Welcome to Twin Falls State Park and to begin the weekend with cultural sharing. \nAn Eastern Woodland Indian story sets the stage with Eastern Woodland Indian hunting techniques included. Dressed for frontier tracking\, this gets everyone gathered and ready for a great weekend. After a break with some snacks\, there’ll be an overview of the weekend activities followed by ‘Dem Bones Gonna Rise Again\,’ a mental skill building with skulls. Judging the scavenger hunt and rewarding the hunter/gatherers continues to expand insight into the early 18th century lifestyle. [MN – Tracking] \nFollowing the Top Tracker and Recap\, is ‘Nature in Winter’\, a powerpoint and in depth conversation about the wonders of winter. [MN – Nature in Winter] \n“Observing the Effects of Winter Conditions of Plants and Animals”This interpretative hike meets inside the lodge lobby to go outside. \n“Tracking Walk” – An emphasis on animal signs and calling. Using your voice to attract animals or when not to use your voice. \n“Early American Naturalists” – An indoor presentation about early naturalists\, observations\, and documentation of species. \n“Listen to the Dark” is an outdoors tracking walk or an indoor program\, “Animals of Interest” about extinct\, Extirpated\, rare\, threatened and endangered species near Twin Falls. \nTracking & Woods Lore Weekend is presented by Trails\, Inc.\, Doug Wood and Dianne Anestis\, and Tammy Cooper\, Park Naturalist. DESCRIPTION:Nashville artist Gracee Shriver will perform at Stonewall Resort on Saturday\, March 4\, 2023.  Shriver follows the footsteps of the likes of Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire as a country singer with Oklahoma roots. \nGracee Shriver is one of Music City’s hottest rising acts. A contestant on Season 17 of NBC’s hit television show\, “The Voice” (and a member of Blake Shelton’s team)\, Shriver placed in the top 16. Her latest song\, “Alone Some”\, has been featured on Spotify’s ‘Women of Country’ playlist. In 2021 and 2022\, she was chosen by CMT for the prestigious Belmont University Country Showcase.\n.\nThe concert will take place in the Stonewall Ballroom. SUMMARY:Team Irish Road Bowling: Kanawha State Forest
DESCRIPTION:As part of Celtic Calling\, Kanawha State Forest will be hosting the Irish Road Bowling competition. The event is coordinated by Chris Higgins\, from Celtic Calling that is scheduled March 5\, 2023. The event is supported by the Kanawha State Forest Foundation. \n\n\n\n“The course starts at the Picnic Area (The Pines) located on the left just after Rattlesnake Run.  From there you bowl toward the Nature Center parking area. The course finishes at the giant boulder (Copperhead Rock) on the left of the road by the Spotted Salamander Trail. \n\n\n\nTeams will consist of a minimum of 3 bowlers per team. If you haven’t got a team\, come anyway and we’ll find you a team the day of the event. Team members will take turns to ‘hurl’ a 28 oz steel ball along the course. The team taking the least number of shots is the winner. \n\n\n\nThere will be prizes; one for each in the following divisions: \n\n\n\nFamily Team. A family team must have one member age 14 or younger \n\n\n\nMen’s Team \n\n\n\nWomen’s Team \n\n\n\nCo-ed Team \n\n\n\nTeam Registration starts at 1:30pm\, the event starts at 2pm. Entry is free\, but a refundable deposit of $5 for your road bowl is payable.  \n\n\n\nDonations or memberships to/for the Kanawha State Forest Foundation which makes enhancements to the park can be made at the start line  \n\n\n\nAbout Road Bowling in West Virginia: \n\n\n\nSince its start in the village of Ireland\, as part of the ‘Irish Spring Festival’\, in the 90’s\, Irish Road Bowling in West Virginia has grown to over 20 Events organized around the State. The West Virginia Irish Road Bowling Association\, has hosted USA national championships in 2006\, 2009\, 2012\, 2015 and 2018 to qualify for the All Ireland Finals. West Virginian Bowlers have represented the US in Ireland at these events. Come and celebrate over 25 years of  WVIRBA.

Meet park naturalists at the Blackwater Sled Run at 10:00 a.m. to enter a cathedral-like hardwood forest and earn West Virginia State Park green day hiking patch. \nThe lycopodium and moss covered forest floor add a touch of green color throughout the winter and early spring. Enjoy listening for and observing Birds of Blackwater Falls: brown creepers\, black capped chickadee and woodpeckers as the naturalists interpret the forest and bogsfound along our travels. This jaunt is about 1-1⁄2 miles. The trail doesn’t change much in elevation but contains roots\, rocks and short inclines that can be snow covered or muddy so boots and hiking/walking sticks are recommended. We pace ourselves. SUMMARY:Green Day Hike: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:Green Day Hikes at many WV State Parks began as a St. Patrick’s Day activity and has morphed to a day to hike as spring greens up. \nJust a wee bit after St. Paddy’s Day\, take a hike on the Cherry Lane Trail. Meet park naturalists at the Blackwater Sled Run at 10:00 a.m. to enter a cathedral-like hardwood forest and earn West Virginia State Park green day hiking patch. \nThe lycopodium and moss covered forest floor add a touch of green color throughout the winter and early spring. Enjoy listening for and observing Birds of Blackwater Falls: brown creepers\, black capped chickadee and woodpeckers as the naturalists interpret the forest and bogs found along our travels. \nThis jaunt is about 1-½ miles. The trail doesn’t change much in elevation but contains roots\, rocks and short inclines that can be snow covered or muddy so boots and hiking/walking sticks are recommended. We pace ourselves. Please\, dress appropriately for the weather because in March there may be snow or it may be spring like weather. If you show\, we go unless safety is an issue. YPP \n1:30 p.m.Snake Meet and GreetJoin the park naturalist for an up close and personal look at one of our West Virginia snakes!Learn about other snakes found in the state\, unique traits of snakes\, the threats they face\, and how snakes impact your life! SUMMARY:40th Annual Sue Browning Wildflower Hike - Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:No foolin’!  The Wildflower Hike that remembers Sue Browning\, an individual that started this event 40 years ago\, falls on April Fool’s Day\, April 1\, 2023.   \n\n\n\nThere are two hikes: Woodpecker Trail and the Fitness to Shawnee Trail.  The hike and the walk both start at the Museum in the Park. Participants of all ages are welcome. There is no fee to participate. If you show\, we go regardless of rain\, chill or some years snow.  Closed toed shoes or hiking boots are recommended. \n\n\n\nWoodpecker Trail Hike \n\n\n\n9:00 a.m. \n\n\n\nEarly and intrepid hikers are rewarded with the best wildflower show that Chief Logan State Park has to offer\, perhaps the best spring wildflower hike in West Virginia.  This is the original Sue Browning HIke and the reason that nature-lovers have been coming back for almost four decades.  The Woodpecker Trail is a moderate trail of approximately three miles. We’ll pace ourselves and make plenty of stops for photographs and wildflower identification. \n\n\n\nConsider spending Friday night at Chief Logan Lodge so you’ll be fresh as a daisy at 9:00 a.m. for this hike.   \n\n\n\nFitness to Shawnee Trails Walk \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. \n\n\n\nIf an early morning hike is not your speed\, maybe roll out of bed at Chief Logan Lodge and join us for a post-lunch stroll!  While we may not see the same number of flowers that we will see on Woodpecker Trail\, we will usually see every species of the flower but fewer in number.  This walk is a great option for families with younger children.  There is one short steep start at the Shawnee Trail and then easy walking. \n\n\n\nSue Browning\, Ester Hinchman and other garden club members that encouraged folks to discover Chief Logan’s trails forty years ago\, would want us to keep a list of spring blooms observed in 2023.   \n\n\n\nHave questions?  Email Lauren.E.Cole@wv.gov. \n\n\n\nReserve lodging online: \n\n\n\nBook Now
