Pendleton Point Overlook Parking Lot \nRoaming the park during quiet hours when the park is closed (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) is discouraged. But stargazing is possible with the permit at the two designated locations that are super areas with very dark skies. \nThe permit lets park security know you’ve registered. SUMMARY:Leafpeeper Festival Activities: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:The Leafpepper Festival in Tucker County finds a variety of scheduled activities planned. For September 22-23\, 2023 these activities are hosted at Blackwater Falls State Park. Activities are open to the public and for all ages and are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. Find additional activities and events across Tucker County at the website canaanvalley.org. \nFRIDAY\, September 22\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. CHERRY LANE HIKEJoin the naturalist at Sled Run Fire Circle to enter a cathedral-like hardwood forest and earn West Virginia State Park Wonderfall hiking patch. The lycopodium and moss covered forest floor add a touch of green color throughout the year. Enjoy listening to and observing Birds of Blackwater Falls: brown creepers\, black capped chickadee and woodpeckers as the naturalists interpret the forest and bogs found along our travels. This jaunt is about 11⁄2 miles. The trail doesn’t change much in elevation but contains roots\, rocks and short inclines that can be muddy so boots and hiking/walking sticks are recommended. We pace ourselves. Please\, dress appropriately for the weather. If you show\, we go unless safety is an issue. Plan on about 90 minutes of time from start to conclusion. This program meets the Young People for Parks activity requirements. \n1:00 p.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin us in the Harold Walters Nature Center for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00 \n3:00 p.m. PEPPERONI ROLLS & FLAMESJoin the seasonal naturalist\, to have fun with hot sparks \, perhaps some Trivia\, singing and storytelling. About 1-1/2 hours. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All about Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. DESCRIPTION:Join a hike to the remote location of the former town of Spruce\, led by Naturalist Jaime Shearer at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. This hike combines hiking and historic interpretation of this fascinating site. \nMeet at the Cass Company Store Front Porch at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday\, September 30\, 2023. There is no fee to participate. \nShearer gives a brief orientation about the hike and directions to the drive to the starting point to start the hike. The drive takes approximately 15 minutes. DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full harvest moon at Cass on September 30\, 2023. \nThe “Full Harvest Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center at the Cass Company Store. This evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nThe September full moon is known as the Full Harvest Moon. Most often\, the September full Moon is the Harvest Moon which is the Full Moon that occurs closest to the Fall Equinox. At the peak of harvest\, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this moon.
