We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nSATURDAY\, September 2\, 2023 \n2:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. This is a lovely morning walk at Pipestem. (1 hour) \n2:00 – 3:00 pm: Wings of Wonder-Birds of PreyThree Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) is live at Pipestem Resort. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. What a nice program to attend after having Sunday lunch at the restaurant or an afternoon outing to the park. \nThis nature program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged indoors at the conference center in McKeever Lodge at Pipestem State Park. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. An excellent presentation for all ages. \nYoung People for ParksYPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. Let’s find out more about the Cicada and do a craft\, too! Meet in the Activity Room\, at the administrative building. (length 1 hour) \n2:00pm: Butterflies:Come learn about the variety of Butterflies and learn about the life cycle of Butterflies. We will take a walk along the Road to No Where to try and catch some butterflies\, with nets. We will also make a Butterfly to take home! Meet in the Activity Room\, at the administrative building. (length up to 1.5 hour) \nSo Much Fun!SATURDAY\, September 2\, 202312:00noon: Anything That Floats!!Join us at 12:00 p.m. at the boat launch. Bring literally anything that floats! You can boat on: air mattress\, barrels\, inflatables\, duct tape and cardboard boats\, kayaks\, canoes\, standup paddle boards\, etc. We’ll launch from the boat dock for some water fun. Wear ridiculous outfits\, and enjoy the day on the water. Standard life jacket laws still apply. Children 12 and under must have a life jacket on at all times in the boat\, children 13 and older (and adults) must at least have a life jacket in the craft. \nMore Fun!SUNDAY\, September 3\, 20232:00pm: BICYCLE PARADELet’s say goodbye to Summer with a Bicycle Parade! Bring your bike\, your kids in the stroller or wagon and yourself! All ages are welcome. Decorate your bike before you come and let’s have a “Goodbye to Summer Parade” around parts of the Exercise Loop\, Moxley and Old Orchard. The parade route will be about 1.25 miles. Wear your helmets because WV Bicycle Helmet Regulations will be in effect. Please decorate your bike prior to coming to the parade\, but we will also have some decorations available at 1:00pm\, if you need them. YPP \nSUNDAY\, September 3\, 2023The Nature Center is open from 10:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. \n10:30 a.m. Prehistoric Amber/Copal CraftJoin the recreation assistant for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Pendleton Point Overlook Parking Lot \nRoaming the park during quiet hours when the park is closed (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) is discouraged. But stargazing is possible with the permit at the two designated locations that are super areas with very dark skies. \nThe permit lets park security know you’ve registered. DESCRIPTION:The Long Point String Band is an Old-Time Acoustic “Neo-Traditional” outfit from southern W.V. Come listen to good music on Saturday\, September 2\, 2023 at Pipestem Resort State Park amphitheater at 8:00 p.m. This concert is free and open to the public. \nLong Point String Band blends the authenticity of Old-Time Mountain Music\, with the flare of bluegrass\, regularly playing musical selections from West Virginia old-time and bluegrass pioneers. The LPSB is a highly decorated group\, consisting of the virtuosic stylings of Hunter Walker\, Brian C. Bell\, Lewis Prichard and Lars Swanson. \nThe Long Point String Band released their debut\, self-titled album in July\, 2016. A collection of old-time\, Appalachian tunes and band / festival favorites. Their debut album release was met with success and positive feedback from top musicians of their genre. \nThe band released their 2nd full length album “Piney Woods”\, which was released in August\, 2018. The 3rd live album was released in May 2020\, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded live at the Weathered Ground Brewery in October 2019\, this album is a collection of old-time and bluegrass tunes that showcase each member of the band. DESCRIPTION:Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) is live at Pipestem Resort on Sunday\, September 3\, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. What a nice program to attend after having Sunday lunch at the restaurant or an afternoon outing to the park. \nThis nature program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. This inspirational portrayal of a gal originally from Spencer\, West Virginia spans her military career.. When Bradley retired in 1963 from the US Army she was the most decorated woman in American military history. \nBradley was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1941 and was a POW until 1945. She was a POW for three years and liberated along with other prisoners in February 1943. She continued to work as a nurse in the prison camp. She was named Chief Nurse of the Eighth Army in 1951 and supervised over 500 nurses in Korea. Bradley attained the rank of Colonel in 1958. Born in 1907\, Bradley lived a full life until her passing in 2002. \nBecky Park presents the story and follows up in person to answer questions and then as herself talking about the program\, the importance of sharing and preserving history. DESCRIPTION:Women in history are alive at Blackwater Falls State Park on Thursday\, September 7\, 2023. Becky Park of Charleston West Virginia portrays Colonel Ruby Bradley at this 7:30 program. Open to the public\, this inspirational portrayal of a gal from originally from Spencer West Virginia spans her military career. There is no charge to attend. \nThe program is a great history lesson for homeschooled children or individuals always interested in military history\, particularly when it involves service by a West Virginian. The program is made possible by the West Virginia Humanities Council and West Virginia State Parks. \nAbout Colonel Ruby BradleyWhen Bradley retired from the U.S. Army in 1963 she was the most decorated woman in American military history. Bradley was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1941 and was a POW until 1945. She was a POW for three years and liberated along with other prisoners in February 1943. She continued to work as a nurse in the prison camp. She was named Chief Nurse of the Eighth Army in 1951 and supervised over 500 nurses in Korea. Bradley attained the rank of Colonel in 1958. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 5:30 a.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, September 9\, 2023. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All about Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace.
