A wonderful birding area\, the 10-mile drive traverses mixed hardwood and Red Spruce forests as well as high meadows at elevations ranging from 2\,500 – 4\,000 feet. Typically\, 15-18 species of warbler are seen/heard which includes the possibility of Golden-winged Warbler and Mourning Warbler. Species which we should also see/hear at the highest elevations include Brown Creeper\, Winter Wren\, Golden-crowned Kinglet\, Hermit Thrush\, Swainson’s Thrush and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Other species include Least Flycatcher\, Blue-headed Vireo\, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Purple Finch. Besides finding Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows near the parking area\, the boardwalk itself is a reliable place for Willow and Alder flycatchers\, Swamp Sparrows and always a few surprises. We will explore this wonderfully birdy part of the refuge. \n1:00 PM\nFlying Higher LLC\nBirds of Prey – Free to attend. Open to the public.\nPresented by Flying Higher\, Jo Santiago is a wildlife biologist and creator of Flying Higher. She is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey and their habitats. The experience of actually living with non-releasable permanently injured birds of prey 24/7 has provided Jo with unique insight into their world. Their individual personalities\, behaviors\, needs\, idiosyncrasies\, and body language are remarkably like our own. They have much to teach us. In learning about them\, we learn much about ourselves. Live\nBirds! \nMountain State Birding Festival is an opportunity to take field trips with Bill Beatty and Janice Runyan at one of West Virginia’s best birding areas. SUMMARY:Corey Lee McQuade and Friends Live: Pipestem Amphitheater
DESCRIPTION:The place to be is the Pipestem Amphitheater on Saturday\, June 17\, 2023 for live music by Corey Lee McQuade and Friends. The entertainment begins at 8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Corey Lee McQuade and Friends \nThe Americana sounds of Corey Lee McQuade\, Paul Johnson\, and Lars Swanson have been performing together for over two decades. Moving between folk\, bluegrass\, blues and soul\, Paul E Johnson’s voice is versatile and emotive. Johnson looks like a mountain and sings like a man\, or\, if you prefer\, vice versa. Johnson has got one of those voices that’s like a revelation. Simultaneously gruff\, scratchy and sensitive. Corey Lee McQuade\, “the other flatpicking dobro man”\, carries on the dobro style of Grammy winner Tut Taylor\, flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. Corey and Tut Taylor became good friends and performed together until 2015. They will be joined by Lars Swanson on bass. Lars is one of the most versatile bass players in the country performing with The Long Pint String Band\, Chance McCoy\, and Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. as his musical director. This is the sound of today’s Appalachian music. \nFor more information email pipestemsp@wv.gov or call 304-466-1800. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now
