DESCRIPTION:Bluestone State Park offers a variety of nature-oriented activities July 27-28\, 2022. From Giant Bubbles to weekly campfire program\, Naturalist Jonathan Lipscomb invites family and friends to participate in outdoor fun. Activities are open to the public and free to attend unless there is a craft fee. \nWednesday July 27\, 2022\n1:00-2:30pm\nChalk Art\nJoin me at the Meador bathhouse to create sidewalk chalk art \n3-5 pm\nGiant Bubbles and Water Rockets\nJoin me at the Meador bathouse to play with some amazing bubbles and launch water rockets. This is a favorite time at Bluestone making ginormous bubbles and walking into them. We’ll learn a little science while we’re at play. It’s a great family activity and exceptionally fun for kiddos. \n6pm\nPrimitive Fire Starting\nNaturalist Jonathan is a bit of a heritage arts person. Meet him at the fire shelter behind the activities building to learn the basics of flint and steel fire starting. *ypp \n7-9pm\nWeekly Campfire\nJoin me at the fire shelter below the activities building to swap stories\, relax\, and learn basic campfire cooking skills. Cooking skills includes creating food. This program starts at the activities building in the pines to build a birdhouse. This is a beautiful hike. 1 ½ – 2 hours. \n2 pm\nSPECIAL PROGRAM\nTHREE RIVERS AVIAN CENTER\nTRAC presents the “Wings of Wonder – Birds of Prey” program in the Anderson Center at 2:00\, July 30\, 2022. We ‘ll see at least six live educational birds as Ron and Wendy talk about each raptor\, their habitats and habits. Don’t miss this presentation. Questions are welcomed. Open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Bats are amazing mammals that fly. They are a highly effective natural form of insect control. Studies have shown that bats can catch and consume large quantities of insects. DESCRIPTION:​​Dancing with “Lou Mauiri” is back and happening in 2022 at Blackwater Falls State Park on July 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Blackwater Falls Lodge.\nLou Mauiri is a West Virginia icon and proof that dancing keeps you ​spry and ​young at heart. \nLou Maiuri was born in 1928 in Montgomery\, WV. The 93 year old is an award-winning flatfoot/clog dancer and square dance caller. Lou is also a recipient of the Vandalia Award\, the highest folk honor given in state of West Virginia. Move to the traditional commands of West Virginia’s oldest professional square caller with some squares\, two step and simple line dance. Fun for the entire Family. Learn about the woods around you and a little history about the park while out there. \n6:00 pm\nTurtle Talk (YPP)\nHeld at the Lodge in the old Lobby\nWest Virginia has a wide variety of turtle species within the state. Join the Seasonal Naturalist in a short talk about these amazing creatures. Participants will receive a coloring sheet and take a pledge at the end of the talk. \nFriday – July 29\, 2022\n3:30 pm: Pollinators (YPP)\nMeet at the Nature Center\nPollinators are important for so many reasons. Taking a walk to the pollinator field we will learn a little about what they do. (1 hour) YPP \nFriday\, July 29\, 2022\n10:00 AM\nPlan a Hike\nMeet Bob at the Nature Center for ideas about what to prepare for when you plan a hike. YPP \nSaturday\, July 30\, 2022\n9:00 AM – 3:00 PM\nCraft Show/Flea Market: Pipestem\nSummer fun includes outdoor shopping at a craft show/flea-style market at Pipestem Resort State Park on Saturday July 30\, 2022. Located at the Amphitheater parking lot\, the market is from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The event is open to the public to attend and check out the wares. There is no charge to attend. \nInterested vendors should contact Nicole Miller at nicole.m.miller@wv.gov to register. Vendors may set up starting at 7:30 a.m. Vendor set up fee is $25 for a 9×18 space. Space must be reserved in advance. \n10:00 AM\nDogwood Hike\nMeet Bob at the Nature Center for a little exercise while hiking along the Dogwood Trail. NMW offers everyone\, everywhere a unique opportunity to become a Citizen Scientist and contribute scientific data about moths. It’s a great evening program. \nBlackwater Falls State Park celebrates moths on Friday evening\, July 29\, 2022 in conjunction with National Moth Week\,\nMeet at Blackwater Falls Nature Center at 8:30 p.m. Moth Night will be set up from 8:30 until 10:00 p.m. \nSome basic differences between moths and butterflies to get you started: \nMoth: Thick\, furry body\, thread-like or frond like antennae and when resting\, wings fold down over their body so the wing tops are visible \nButterfly: Thin\, smooth bodies\, smooth antennae ending in a bulb or “club”\, and when resting\, wings fold over the body so under-sides are visible \nBring the whole family to watch for many different moths that may visit several special lighting and backdrop stations staged to attract them. Taking photos of moths helps to identify them using apps and printed book resources. Consider bringing your smart phones or cameras.
