SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike: Cass
DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on November 25\, 2023. \nThe “Full Beaver Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center near the Cass Company Store at 6:30pm on November 25\, 2023\, two days after the Thanksgiving holiday. \nThis evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nThe November full moon is known as the Full Beaver Moon. This was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps froze\, to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. This was also the time when beavers finished preparations for winter so they could retreat into their lodges.Other names for the November Full Moon are the Freezing Moon\, FrostMoon\, and Whitefish Moon. \nThis full moon hike begins at 6:30 PM. DESCRIPTION:Led by ASCAP songwriters\, the Songwriter Retreat at Twin Falls Resort State Park\, November 10-12\, 2023 is remarkable\, says Programmer Coordinator Tammy Cooper. The retreat requires preregistration and is open to the public. \nThe workshop is designed for songwriters of all levels but will be particularly helpful for those who have written songs already and wish to perfect their craft. DESCRIPTION:A Quilter’s Camp encourages folks to gather at North Bend State Park from Sunday\, October 29 through Friday\, November 3\, 2023. Camp classes are coordinated and taught by Janelle Dotson. Quilt Camp activities are conducted in the Hughes and Douglas Conference Rooms and open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Setup begins at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday\, October 29\, 2023. October 30 to November 2 camp is from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and November 3 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. \nPreregistration is required. To enroll in the Quilter’s Camp\, North Bend State Park will need your contact information that includes your name and mailing address\, phone number to contact\, email address\, and that you want to participate in the Quilter’s Camp. DESCRIPTION:BATS! \nBats are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats can eat up to 1\,200 mosquitoes an hour. Join us in building a bat box and learning more about these important animals in our ecosystem. \nMake your own bat box from a precut kit to take home. Participants will use a screw driver and wood screws to assemble boxes together. Instructor Sam Muncy will be available to assist with assembly. A template and instructions for cutting and making more boxes will be handed out along with some information about how to attract bats. \nView a PowerPoint presentation of bats and bat colonies across West Virginia and the United States. Sam really enjoys exploring and discovering the hidden gems of West Virginia natural heritage as a Master Naturalist certified by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Being a Master Naturalist gives Sam the opportunity to support our state’s wonderful park system and to share his appreciation for our natural surroundings with visitors to our parks. \nMuncy is the treasurer of the West Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation. DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on October 28\, 2023. \n\n\n\nThe “Full Hunter’s Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park beginsfrom the visitor’s center at the Cass Company Store area. Join guest speaker\, Sam Muncy\, and naturalist in Harold Walters Nature Center.Through slides and class discussion we will shed some (moon) light on our closest outer space neighbor. The actual footage and sound on Neal Armstrong’s landing will be shown and discussed. Along with slides of past moon myths and the historical path NASA made to the moon. \nOctober 28\, 2023 is also a full moon coined a Full Hunter’s Moon and a lovely time to beat the nature center looking up. Weather permitting\, the naturalist will conduct a night sky viewing after the mysterious moon program. YPP \nSUNDAY\, October 29\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.11:00 a.m. “Stained Glass” Amphibian CraftJoin seasonal naturalists for this educational craft while learning about amphibians of West Virginia. Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie JurassicPark!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. DESCRIPTION:Southern West Virginia Road Runners Club and Pipestem Resort State Park invites you to the 47th annual Pumpkin Run. There’s a 10K run\, a 5K run\, a 5K walk and a 800 meter Fun Run for youth 12 years of age and younger. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. at Park Headquarters. \nHere’s the pumpkin (aka scoop) about the event: \nAll events are scheduled for October 28\, 2023 at Pipestem Resort State Park with registration opening at 8:30 a.m. and the event times starting at 10:00 a.m. except the Fun Run for youth when it begins at 11 a.m. \nLet’s have some fun! Halloween Costume Contest! Yes! That’s right. Judging will be done shortly after the beginning of the race\, so wear your best costume. There’s a grand prize and there are prizes for runners up. Seeing an Uncle Sam\, a zombie\, Spiderman or a wanna be big foot running just makes the event all the more exciting. \nThere is an entry fee to participate. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, October 21\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. SUMMARY:Mary Ingles Trail Opens: Bluestone
DESCRIPTION:Retrace the steps of Mary Draper Ingles on this historic trail with Bluestone State Park naturalist Jonathan Lipscomb. The hike begins at the gate at the end of the Pits Rd boat launch area. The trail ends near Leatherwood Road and offers a fantastic view of Bluestone Dam.  \nEnjoy picture views of Bluestone Lake and wildlife viewing opportunities no matter the distance you choose on this out-and-back trip. Difficulty level is easy.  If you walk the whole distance it is a total of 3.8 miles.  Lipscomb will share the history of the area\, acknowledge the volunteers that accomplished an unbelievable amount of work\, and include identification of flora and fauna along the trail with fall colors as a backdrop. \nThe Mary Ingles Trail officially opens at Bluestone State Park on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023 with the hike starting at 10:00 a.m.  The activity is open to the public. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Thursday\, October 19\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area.
