DESCRIPTION:Women in history are alive at Blackwater Falls State Park on Thursday\, September 7\, 2023. Becky Park of Charleston West Virginia portrays Colonel Ruby Bradley at this 7:30 program. Open to the public\, this inspirational portrayal of a gal from originally from Spencer West Virginia spans her military career. There is no charge to attend. \nThe program is a great history lesson for homeschooled children or individuals always interested in military history\, particularly when it involves service by a West Virginian. The program is made possible by the West Virginia Humanities Council and West Virginia State Parks. \nAbout Colonel Ruby BradleyWhen Bradley retired from the U.S. Army in 1963 she was the most decorated woman in American military history. Bradley was captured by the Japanese in the Philippines in 1941 and was a POW until 1945. She was a POW for three years and liberated along with other prisoners in February 1943. She continued to work as a nurse in the prison camp. She was named Chief Nurse of the Eighth Army in 1951 and supervised over 500 nurses in Korea. Bradley attained the rank of Colonel in 1958. SUMMARY:Wings of Wonder-Birds of Prey: Pipestem
DESCRIPTION:Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) is live at Pipestem Resort on Sunday\, September 3\, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. What a nice program to attend after having Sunday lunch at the restaurant or an afternoon outing to the park. \nThis nature program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged at the conference center in McKeever Lodge at Pipestem State Park. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. SUMMARY:Long Point String Band Live: Pipestem Amphitheater
DESCRIPTION:The Long Point String Band is an Old-Time Acoustic “Neo-Traditional” outfit from southern W.V. Come listen to good music on Saturday\, September 2\, 2023 at Pipestem Resort State Park amphitheater at 8:00 p.m. This concert is free and open to the public. \nLong Point String Band blends the authenticity of Old-Time Mountain Music\, with the flare of bluegrass\, regularly playing musical selections from West Virginia old-time and bluegrass pioneers. The LPSB is a highly decorated group\, consisting of the virtuosic stylings of Hunter Walker\, Brian C. Bell\, Lewis Prichard and Lars Swanson. \nThe Long Point String Band released their debut\, self-titled album in July\, 2016. A collection of old-time\, Appalachian tunes and band / festival favorites. Their debut album release was met with success and positive feedback from top musicians of their genre. \nThe band released their 2nd full length album “Piney Woods”\, which was released in August\, 2018. The 3rd live album was released in May 2020\, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recorded live at the Weathered Ground Brewery in October 2019\, this album is a collection of old-time and bluegrass tunes that showcase each member of the band. With more recordings and special projects on the horizon\, the LPSB prides themselves on playing a full calendar of shows and special events throughout the region. \nThis performance is free and open to the public. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. We will take a walk along the Road to No Where to try and catch some butterflies\, with nets. We will also make a Butterfly to take home! Meet in the Activity Room\, at the administrative building. (length up to 1.5 hour) \nSo Much Fun!SATURDAY\, September 2\, 202312:00noon: Anything That Floats!!Join us at 12:00 p.m. at the boat launch. Bring literally anything that floats! You can boat on: air mattress\, barrels\, inflatables\, duct tape and cardboard boats\, kayaks\, canoes\, standup paddle boards\, etc. We’ll launch from the boat dock for some water fun. Wear ridiculous outfits\, and enjoy the day on the water. Standard life jacket laws still apply. Children 12 and under must have a life jacket on at all times in the boat\, children 13 and older (and adults) must at least have a life jacket in the craft. \nMore Fun!SUNDAY\, September 3\, 20232:00pm: BICYCLE PARADELet’s say goodbye to Summer with a Bicycle Parade! Bring your bike\, your kids in the stroller or wagon and yourself! All ages are welcome. Decorate your bike before you come and let’s have a “Goodbye to Summer Parade” around parts of the Exercise Loop\, Moxley and Old Orchard. The parade route will be about 1.25 miles. Wear your helmets because WV Bicycle Helmet Regulations will be in effect. Please decorate your bike prior to coming to the parade\, but we will also have some decorations available at 1:00pm\, if you need them. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. What a nice program to attend after having Sunday lunch at the restaurant or an afternoon outing to the park. \nThis nature program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged indoors at the conference center in McKeever Lodge at Pipestem State Park. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. DESCRIPTION:The Perseids Meteor Show is the best meteor shower of the year according to NASA. \nMeet Naturalist Lauren Cole at Chief Logan Lodge at the outdoor fire pit area on August 26\, 2023. Lauren will be there from 9:00 – 11:00 pm. Look through a computerized telescope at various celestial bodies including the moon\, planets\, galaxies\, and more. Learn seasonal constellations and other cool facts about the night sky. Planets Mars andSaturn may be visible. The moon is a Waxing Gibbous moon at 72% illumination. Moon pies are available as snacks. \nAbout the PerseidsAccording to NASA\, the Perseid meteor shower peaks in mid-August\, and is considered the best meteor shower of the year.The meteor count is approximately 50-100 meteors per hour and a velocity of 37 (59 km) per second. DESCRIPTION:It’s an evening of rock n’ roll oldies\, country and pop music. Rick K and the Allnighters Band performs live music at Pipestem Resort State Park on Saturday\, August 26\, 2023. \nThe evening includes showmanship and hilarious high jinx in addition to favorite popular music spanning 50 years of style. It is “great family entertainment”. This band performs at the outdoor amphitheater for an evening concert. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Tygart Lake State Park are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, August 26\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The educational birds program is a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis evening program is about raptors that are native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. This program is for attendees 16 years or age and older. There is a $5 fee to attend. \nAbout the Fear Night hosts: Tom Moore and Valerie WrightTom Moore is the co-founder of the Mid-Ohio Valley Ghost Hunters and has appeared in episodes of “Haunting and Horrors” on destination America and in paranormal quests. He has also appeared in non-paranormal movies such as ‘Khange Tha Game’\, ‘Marrtown’ and ‘Virt’. Since 2000\, Tom has spoken about the paranormal at several conferences and informational meetings. Activities are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. The Nature Center is open Sunday – Friday from 10:30AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM-7:00PM unless noted. The boathouse is open 10:30AM – 5:00PM Wednesday – Sunday until Labor Day and closed on Monday and Tuesday\, except on a holiday. \nSATURDAY\, August 26\, 2023Activity Room/Store of the Nature Center closed to the public until 1 p.m. just for today.The nature exhibit room is open and restrooms are open. \n11:00 a.m. “STAINED GLASS” AMPHIBIAN CRAFTJoin volunteer\, Beverly\, on the side porch of Nature Center for this educational craft. Free. YPP \n1:30 p.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin the recreation assistant for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie JurassicPark!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . \nThe amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00 \n2:00 p.m. WILDFLOWER STROLLLet’s go on a walk along our pollinator garden and trails to Pendleton Lake Dam exploring wildflowers. About 1 hour. DESCRIPTION:Cass Scenic Railroad and Crandall Creek present Bluegrass Excursion on Saturday\, August 26\, 2023.  This special train ride departs at 11:30 a.m. and is a 22-mile round trip train ride to Bald Knob where you’ll view panoramic views of the lofty Appalachians!  The package includes a box lunch served enroute to Bald Knob. Bring your cameras.  \nAfter arriving back in Cass around 4:30 p.m.\, you’ll have time to explore town\, the company store\, museum and then an all-inclusive dinner at Shays Restaurant from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. (entrée\, sides\, dessert\, drinks\, tax and gratuity included in the package). You’ll end your day at the Cass Community Center with a concert by award winning bluegrass band Crandall Creek.
