DESCRIPTION:Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) is live at Cacapon Resort State Park on Friday\, June 23\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \n\n\n\nThis evening program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls.  You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. This program is scheduled at several state parks in 2023.   \n\n\n\nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged in the Bath House at Cacapon Resort State Park. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. An excellent presentation for all ages. The entertainment begins at 8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Corey Lee McQuade and Friends \nThe Americana sounds of Corey Lee McQuade\, Paul Johnson\, and Lars Swanson have been performing together for over two decades. Moving between folk\, bluegrass\, blues and soul\, Paul E Johnson’s voice is versatile and emotive. Johnson looks like a mountain and sings like a man\, or\, if you prefer\, vice versa. Johnson has got one of those voices that’s like a revelation. Simultaneously gruff\, scratchy and sensitive. Corey Lee McQuade\, “the other flatpicking dobro man”\, carries on the dobro style of Grammy winner Tut Taylor\, flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. Corey and Tut Taylor became good friends and performed together until 2015. They will be joined by Lars Swanson on bass. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the children of this famous Blennerhassett Island Family.  This program is designed for young people (in grades 3-6) accompanied by parent(s) or grandparent(s). This is a wonderful opportunity for youth and families to engage in the history of Blennerhassett Island and occupants of the island. Join us on Saturday\, June 17\, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.  \nWhat were these children’s names and ages\, where was their bedroom in the house\, and why was one of them nicknamed “Little Snowdrop?” \nThis parent/child educational event includes a Special Mansion Tour and Outdoor Activities. Participants will explore the various rooms of the Mansion from a child’s perspective and learn more about the Blennerhassett children’s parents. At the end of this tour\, the youth will compare the Mansion with their own homes to recognize what things are different then and now.  \nWe’ll play some period games that the Blennerhassett children might have played and learn a children’s song from an earlier time. It will be a fun day at Blennerhassett Island. The cost of this one-hour event is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids. Space is limited. YPP \n3:30 p.m.Prehistoric Amber/copal CraftThe sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures is perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! SUMMARY:Cass 5K Stump Run: Cass
DESCRIPTION:The Cass 5K Stump Run is June 10\, 2023 and the course starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Cass Community Center. \nFrom the Community Center\, runners travel down Front Street to the Greenbrier River Trail (GRT). Total elevation change over the course is less than 60 feet and the majority of the course is at least partly shaded. The course follows the GRT and the largest part of the run is on the GRT\, which is a former railroad grade that is essentially flat. The trail hugs the Greenbrier River and offers river views. The race ends at the new trail head in front of the Cass Company Store. \nPreregistration is encouraged and registration by May 27\, 2023 is rewarded with a lower fee and opportunity for the commemorative item. Preregistration saves time when arriving at the race site. Preregistration welcomes credit card payments; onsite registration requires cash or check payments. \nThere are ten age groups. Overall top three men and women will receive trophies. The top three in each age group\, male and female will receive Award Certificates. DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on June 03\, 2023. \nThe “Strawberry Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center at 8:30 p.m. This evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nJune’s full moon is known as the Strawberry Moon. Typically\, the last full moon of Spring and the first of Summer. SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike: Cass Scenic Railroad
DESCRIPTION:Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is offering  a National Trails Day Hike Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 in conjunction with a Full Moon Hike. The hike starts at 8:30PM and meets at the Cass Company Store. \nThis hike is on the Greenbrier River Trail and will depart from the Company Store to Mile Marker 79 and return.  About three miles of easy walking until the light of a full moon. The hike leader is Superintendent Marshall Markley.  Participants received a Trails Day patch upon return.  The hike is open to the public and without charge.  \nNational Trails Day® occurs on the first Saturday in June. It is a day of public events aimed at advocacy and trail service. The celebration is led by the American Hiking Society and 2023 marks the 31st year of the initiative.

SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike: Holly River
DESCRIPTION:Holly River State Park celebrates National Trails Day on Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 with a guided hike led by Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong. “What better choice than the Tramontaine Trail because it leads to an historic Swiss homestead\, where hikers can explore\, seek and discover evidence of the mountain farm.” \nToday the hike is about 3-hours. This trail hike will have a rest stop at the site of an old Swiss homestead settled in the 1870s where you can also see one of Holly River’s oldest and largest trees – oh if they could talk and tell stories. \nThis National Trails Day hike meets at the porch of the Holly River State Park office at 10:45 a.m. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes\, bring water and lunch. ‘We’ll set foot at 11:00 a.m and return by 3:00 p.m. which allows for a couple of rest stops along the way. \nPlease call Holly River State Park office at 304-493-6353 to preregister or for more information. This hike is open to the public and fee free. DESCRIPTION:A special hike on June 3\, 2023 recognizes National Trails Day. First things first\, hikers will park and meet at the Tygart Lake Dam Visitors Center parking area at or before 10:00AM. Participants will meet Tygart Lake State Park Naturalist\, Jacob Jackson. \nThe hike begins at the parking area and follows the Dam Trail from the USACE parking area to Tygart Lake State Park Lodge (it’s about a 1½-mile loop) returning to the parking area. We will also have an opportunity to walk out on the Tygart Dam itself! \nSturdy hiking boots or hiking shoes are suggested. SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike: Cacapon
DESCRIPTION:Cacapon Resort State Park celebrates National Trails Day on June 3\, 2023 with two guided hikes. Organized by Park Naturalist Valerie Chaney and park volunteers\, both hikes will start from the Nature Center at 10:00 a.m.    \nThe easy to moderate hike will be on the Laurel Trail\, a forested and lake view trail that is approximately 2½ miles of total walking. \nThe more strenuous hike will be on the Ziler and Central Trail Loop. Led by naturalist Allen Miller\, this hike provides multiple views with a vigorous climb and descent\, but worth every step.  We pace ourselves to enjoy the experience. Both hikes start at the nature center and depart at the same time. \nHikes are open to the public and without charge. Wearing comfortable closed toed walking or hiking shoes is recommended. Hikers receive a Trails Day patch at the conclusion of the activity. \nNational Trails Day is an initiative to unite all muscle-powered trail activities with the goal of connecting more people to trails.
