The entertainment begins at 8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Corey Lee McQuade and Friends \nThe Americana sounds of Corey Lee McQuade\, Paul Johnson\, and Lars Swanson have been performing together for over two decades. Moving between folk\, bluegrass\, blues and soul\, Paul E Johnson’s voice is versatile and emotive. Johnson looks like a mountain and sings like a man\, or\, if you prefer\, vice versa. Johnson has got one of those voices that’s like a revelation. Simultaneously gruff\, scratchy and sensitive. Corey Lee McQuade\, “the other flatpicking dobro man”\, carries on the dobro style of Grammy winner Tut Taylor\, flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. Corey and Tut Taylor became good friends and performed together until 2015. They will be joined by Lars Swanson on bass. Lars is one of the most versatile bass players in the country performing with The Long Pint String Band\, Chance McCoy\, and Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. as his musical director. DESCRIPTION:Learn about the children of this famous Blennerhassett Island Family.  This program is designed for young people (in grades 3-6) accompanied by parent(s) or grandparent(s). This is a wonderful opportunity for youth and families to engage in the history of Blennerhassett Island and occupants of the island. Join us on Saturday\, June 17\, 2023 at 1:00 p.m.  \nWhat were these children’s names and ages\, where was their bedroom in the house\, and why was one of them nicknamed “Little Snowdrop?” \nThis parent/child educational event includes a Special Mansion Tour and Outdoor Activities. Participants will explore the various rooms of the Mansion from a child’s perspective and learn more about the Blennerhassett children’s parents. At the end of this tour\, the youth will compare the Mansion with their own homes to recognize what things are different then and now.  \nWe’ll play some period games that the Blennerhassett children might have played and learn a children’s song from an earlier time. It will be a fun day at Blennerhassett Island. The cost of this one-hour event is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids. Space is limited. SUMMARY:Cass 5K Stump Run: Cass
DESCRIPTION:The Cass 5K Stump Run is June 10\, 2023 and the course starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Cass Community Center. \nFrom the Community Center\, runners travel down Front Street to the Greenbrier River Trail (GRT). Total elevation change over the course is less than 60 feet and the majority of the course is at least partly shaded. The course follows the GRT and the largest part of the run is on the GRT\, which is a former railroad grade that is essentially flat. The trail hugs the Greenbrier River and offers river views. The race ends at the new trail head in front of the Cass Company Store. \nPreregistration is encouraged and registration by May 27\, 2023 is rewarded with a lower fee and opportunity for the commemorative item. Preregistration saves time when arriving at the race site. Preregistration welcomes credit card payments; onsite registration requires cash or check payments. \nThere are ten age groups. Overall top three men and women will receive trophies. The top three in each age group\, male and female will receive Award Certificates. This trail hike will have a rest stop at the site of an old Swiss homestead settled in the 1870s where you can also see one of Holly River’s oldest and largest trees – oh if they could talk and tell stories. \nThis National Trails Day hike meets at the porch of the Holly River State Park office at 10:45 a.m. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes\, bring water and lunch. ‘We’ll set foot at 11:00 a.m and return by 3:00 p.m. which allows for a couple of rest stops along the way. \nPlease call Holly River State Park office at 304-493-6353 to preregister or for more information. DESCRIPTION:It is a great day for a hike at Pipestem Resort on June 3\, 2023 – National Trails Day. \nMeet Bob and Bryce at the entrance of McKeever Lodge for a hike along a section of the River Trail The trail begins behind McKeever Lodge and we’ll get started at 10:00AM. It starts as a .24 mile of steep descent and we take our time getting where the trail levels out. In about one and a half miles from the lodge\, it crosses the Canyon Rim Trail where shortly thereafter there is a turning point under the aerial tramway and we return to McKeever lodge. Hikers completing this activity received a Trails Day patch. \nDress for the weather and wear proper footwear – open toed shoes or sandals are not recommended due to the hike length and terrain. Total walking is about 3-½ miles. DESCRIPTION:If you like rocks\, gravel\, sand\, boulders\, and really old things like meteors and fossils\, meet Ken Ashton\, a geologist with the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey. He’ll be at Twin Falls June 3\, 2023 with an afternoon hike and an evening geology program indoors. \nThe first step for this special program is an afternoon hike on the Falls Trail. Meet naturalist Tammy Cooper and Geologist Ken Ashton at the Falls Trail parking area at 1:00PM. This is a great opportunity to see first-hand how water shapes and erodes rock over time\, see layers of soils and have a better understanding of all soil horizons start with bedrock. This hike is open to the public and without cost. \nThe second step is our evening program with Geologist Ashton. This presentation goes beyond Twin Falls and across West Virginia’s geologic story. From coal to shale to fossils\, how sand is formed\, is there more than sandstone in West Virginia and what about rivers\, oil\, gas\, salt – all part of the geology program. This evening program will be in the Dogwood Room at Twin Falls Lodge at 7:00PM. DESCRIPTION:The Blackbird Knob Hike is special and for eight hikers a great day for a long hike at Canaan Valley Resort. Beginning at 9:00am and returning by 4:00pm\, this hike requires advance registration. This Blackbird Knob Hike also falls on National Trails Day. \nParticipants will be shuttled to the walk area. The hike is physically challenging as we will encounter rough terrain and water crossings. According to Dave Vance\, hike coordinator “We will view vistas\, high meadows\, and spectacular views. It’s is a great longer distance hike.” \nWaterproof shoes or boots\, and clothing for changing weather conditions are suggested. Please pack a lunch\, snacks or water. Walk is approximately 6 miles in length and is not recommended for smaller children. Pre-Registration Required by Friday at 10:00 am at the Beech Club is necessary. The hike fee is $15 per person.
