SUMMARY:Cass 5K Stump Run: Cass
DESCRIPTION:The Cass 5K Stump Run is June 10\, 2023 and the course starts at 9:00 a.m. at the Cass Community Center. \nFrom the Community Center\, runners travel down Front Street to the Greenbrier River Trail (GRT). Total elevation change over the course is less than 60 feet and the majority of the course is at least partly shaded. The course follows the GRT and the largest part of the run is on the GRT\, which is a former railroad grade that is essentially flat. The trail hugs the Greenbrier River and offers river views. The race ends at the new trail head in front of the Cass Company Store. \nPreregistration is encouraged and registration by May 27\, 2023 is rewarded with a lower fee and opportunity for the commemorative item. Preregistration saves time when arriving at the race site. Preregistration welcomes credit card payments; onsite registration requires cash or check payments. \nThere are ten age groups. Overall top three men and women will receive trophies. The top three in each age group\, male and female will receive Award Certificates. DESCRIPTION:Holly River State Park celebrates National Trails Day on Saturday\, June 3\, 2023 with a guided hike led by Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong. “What better choice than the Tramontaine Trail because it leads to an historic Swiss homestead\, where hikers can explore\, seek and discover evidence of the mountain farm.” \nToday the hike is about 3-hours. This trail hike will have a rest stop at the site of an old Swiss homestead settled in the 1870s where you can also see one of Holly River’s oldest and largest trees – oh if they could talk and tell stories. \nThis National Trails Day hike meets at the porch of the Holly River State Park office at 10:45 a.m. Hikers should wear sturdy shoes\, bring water and lunch. ‘We’ll set foot at 11:00 a.m and return by 3:00 p.m. which allows for a couple of rest stops along the way. \nPlease call Holly River State Park office at 304-493-6353 to preregister or for more information. This hike is open to the public and fee free. Led by naturalist Allen Miller\, this hike provides multiple views with a vigorous climb and descent\, but worth every step.  We pace ourselves to enjoy the experience. DESCRIPTION:It is a great day for a hike at Pipestem Resort on June 3\, 2023 – National Trails Day. \nMeet Bob and Bryce at the entrance of McKeever Lodge for a hike along a section of the River Trail The trail begins behind McKeever Lodge and we’ll get started at 10:00AM. It starts as a .24 mile of steep descent and we take our time getting where the trail levels out. In about one and a half miles from the lodge\, it crosses the Canyon Rim Trail where shortly thereafter there is a turning point under the aerial tramway and we return to McKeever lodge. Hikers completing this activity received a Trails Day patch. \nDress for the weather and wear proper footwear – open toed shoes or sandals are not recommended due to the hike length and terrain. Total walking is about 3-½ miles. DESCRIPTION:It’s National Trails Day. \nSet foot at Chief Logan State Park and take a hike on National Trails Day with park naturalist Lauren Cole. The Coal Mine Trail is a moderate hike of about four miles. The pace will be determined by participants. Short stops are part of the activity to learn about the impact of coal in Southern West Virginia\, see old coal mine structures (coal silo\, tipple and more)\, as well as flora and fauna encountered along the trail. SUMMARY:National Trails Day Hike: Beech Fork
DESCRIPTION:Beech Fork State Park hosts a National Trail Days Hike on Saturday June 3\, 2023 at 9:00am. The hike will be on Lost Trail which is a 3.5 mile loop\, with a rating of difficult. \nPlease meet at Lost Trail trailhead parking lot\, behind campsites 103 and 104\, in the Moxley Branch Camping Area. The hike will be led by Park Naturalist\, Terry Watkins\, and will be about 2 hours in length. \nSturdy boots or closed-toed shoes and water are required and insect repellent is recommended. Children 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult. \nParticipants completing the hike with Naturalist Watkins received a Trails Day patch. There is no fee to participate. \nNational Trails Day is an initiative to unite all muscle-powered trail activities with the goal of connecting more people to trails. DESCRIPTION:If you like rocks\, gravel\, sand\, boulders\, and really old things like meteors and fossils\, meet Ken Ashton\, a geologist with the West Virginia Geological & Economic Survey. He’ll be at Twin Falls June 3\, 2023 with an afternoon hike and an evening geology program indoors. \nThe first step for this special program is an afternoon hike on the Falls Trail. Meet naturalist Tammy Cooper and Geologist Ken Ashton at the Falls Trail parking area at 1:00PM. This is a great opportunity to see first-hand how water shapes and erodes rock over time\, see layers of soils and have a better understanding of all soil horizons start with bedrock. This hike is open to the public and without cost. \nThe second step is our evening program with Geologist Ashton. This presentation goes beyond Twin Falls and across West Virginia’s geologic story. From coal to shale to fossils\, how sand is formed\, is there more than sandstone in West Virginia and what about rivers\, oil\, gas\, salt – all part of the geology program. This evening program will be in the Dogwood Room at Twin Falls Lodge at 7:00PM. SUMMARY:Blackbird Knob Hike: Canaan Valley
DESCRIPTION:The Blackbird Knob Hike is special and for eight hikers a great day for a long hike at Canaan Valley Resort. Beginning at 9:00am and returning by 4:00pm\, this hike requires advance registration. This Blackbird Knob Hike also falls on National Trails Day. \nParticipants will be shuttled to the walk area. The hike is physically challenging as we will encounter rough terrain and water crossings. According to Dave Vance\, hike coordinator “We will view vistas\, high meadows\, and spectacular views. It’s is a great longer distance hike.” \nWaterproof shoes or boots\, and clothing for changing weather conditions are suggested. Please pack a lunch\, snacks or water. Walk is approximately 6 miles in length and is not recommended for smaller children. Pre-Registration Required by Friday at 10:00 am at the Beech Club is necessary. The hike fee is $15 per person. SUMMARY:Mountain State Birding Festival: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:This is the ultimate birding weekend for advanced and beginning bird watchers.  The weekend is designed to see and listen to birds in scenic mountain habitats with well-known naturalist/guide Bill Beatty [Bill Beatty Nature] and Janice Runyan of Wellsburg WV as well as indoor presentation with Beatty and Runyan and a live educational birds program on Sunday afternoon. Mountain State Birding Festival is June 2-4\, 2023 with Blackwater Falls State Park as the home base. \nField trips are limited and fee based at $40 per person and includes both field trips conducted during the weekend. These insights and techniques will help anyone expand their birding skills and enjoyment. \nSATURDAY\, June 3\, 2023\nSaturday Morning 6:00 a.m.\nFIELD TRIP – Birdwatching\nPreregistration is necessary \nStuart Memorial Drive\, including Bear Heaven and Bickle Knob – Driving time to Stuart Memorial Drive is about 45 minutes each way. A wonderful birding area\, the 10-mile drive traverses mixed hardwood and Red Spruce forests as well as high meadows at elevations ranging from 2\,500 – 4\,000 feet. Typically\, 15-18 species of warbler are seen/heard which includes the possibility of Golden-winged Warbler and Mourning Warbler. Species which we should also see/hear at the highest elevations include Brown Creeper\, Winter Wren\, Golden-crowned Kinglet\, Hermit Thrush\, Swainson’s Thrush and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Other species include Least Flycatcher\, Blue-headed Vireo\, Red-breasted Nuthatch and Purple Finch. We will lunch near the observation deck at Bickle Knob which offers a stunning 360 degree panorama of the West Virginia mountains. \nSaturday evening\n7:00 p.m. – Free to attend. Open to the public. \nFlycatchers of West Virginia\nThere are 10 species of flycatchers that can be found in West Virginia. Two are easy to identify. Two others are not quite as easily identifiable. The rest can be downright difficult unless you know the songs they sing. This evening program is a visual and auditory program that will help unravel the difficulties of flycatcher identification. \nSUNDAY\, June 4\, 2023\n6:30 a.m.\nFIELD TRIP Freeland Boardwalk\nPreregistration is necessary \nThe Freeland Boardwalk area is arguably the best birding spot in all of the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Besides finding Bobolinks and Savannah Sparrows near the parking area\, the boardwalk itself is a reliable place for Willow and Alder flycatchers\, Swamp Sparrows and always a few surprises. We will explore this wonderfully birdy part of the refuge.   \n1:00 PM\nFlying Higher LLC\nBirds of Prey – Free to attend. Open to the public.\nPresented by Flying Higher\, Jo Santiago is a wildlife biologist and creator of Flying Higher. She is dedicated to the conservation of birds of prey and their habitats. The experience of actually living with non-releasable permanently injured birds of prey 24/7 has provided Jo with unique insight into their world. Their individual personalities\, behaviors\, needs\, idiosyncrasies\, and body language are remarkably like our own. They have much to teach us. Explore an upland forest to an overlook of Blackwater Canyon while discovering some of the plants and animals found in the forest. This out and back trail is about three miles and takes approximately two hours with short interpretive stops. Packing at least 16 ounces of water and a snack is recommended. \nPase Point borders the Monongahela National Forest to an unrestricted rock outcropping with a spectacular view of Blackwater Canyon. Trail is intermediate with short but steep inclines. Wear sturdy shoes please. No sandals/flip flops. Meet at the nature center. You show\, we go. The entertainment begins at 8:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Andrew AdkinsAfter seven years of fronting the popular Appalachian stompgrass band\, The Wild Rumpus at countless festivals\, concerts and clubs including Merlefest\, Bristol Rhythm and Roots\, and the AMA (American Music Association) as well as writing nearly all of the songs for their 3 studio albums\, Andrew has established his own voice with the release of his 4th solo album. “Who I Am” on Mountain Soul Records. \nProduced by Mountain Stage musical director Ron Sowell\, recorded by virtuoso guitarist and engineer Bud Carroll and featuring an all star line up of West Virginia musicians\, the album showcases Andrew’s wry insightful songwriting and his soulful authentic voice. \nAndrew is not only a talented singer songwriter\, he is held in high regard as a performer by his peers. SUMMARY:Wings of Wonder-Birds of Prey: Beech Fork
DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Beech Fork State Park are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, May 27\, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis afternoon program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged in the Administration Building also known as Park Headquarters. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. An excellent presentation for all ages.
