SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Sunday\, October 16\, 2022. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity. Advanced reservations are required for tours and may be purchased online and found on the link \, https://wvstateparks.com/things-to-do/elk-management-tours. \nLauren Cole\, Naturalist/Biologist is the tour leader. Cole is a member of the National Association of Interpreters and a Certified Interpretive Guide. \nReserve lodging online: \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Town of Spruce Hike: Cass
DESCRIPTION:Join a hike to the remote location of the former town of Spruce\, led by Americorps Kelsey Mills\, who will provide historic interpretation of this fascinating site. \nMeet at the Cass Company Store Front Porch at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday\, October 15\, 2022. \nWe’ll get a brief orientation about the hike and directions to the drive to the starting point to start the hike. The drive takes approximately 15 minutes. Hikers are responsible for transportation. To participate is free. The hike duration is about three hours in length and approximately 4 miles of beginning-level hiking. Please wear comfortable hiking boots or shoes and dress for the weather. This is a new longer distance hike opportunity\, unique to the state parks WonderFALL walk/hikes programs. \nAbout Spruce:\nFounded in 1904\, Spruce was once a bustling company town home to 300 people but was abandoned in the 1950s – while not a single building stands today\, the historic footprint of logging remains. You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Pocahontas County while learning about the region’s timber and railroad industries and life in a rural company town. This hike is to a primitive region with limited facilities — make sure to wear water-resistant hiking footwear and pack a pair of binoculars\, and plenty of water. \nFor additional information email cassrailroadsp@wv.gov.

SUMMARY:Full Hunter's Moon Hike: Cass
DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on October 8\, 2022. \nThe “Hunter’s Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitors center (to the left of the Company Store facing the store) at 7:30 p.m. The evening walk is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat walking. Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing for cooler evenings. Hike will be led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley. The hike is open to the public and fee free. \nOctober’s full moon is known as the Hunter’s Moon according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. This full moon name is attributed to Native Americans recognizing this bright Moon for obvious reasons. The leaves are falling from trees\, the deer are fattened\, and it’s time to begin storing up meat for the long winter ahead. Because the fields were traditionally reaped in late September or early October\, hunters could easily see fox and other animals that come out to glean from the fallen grains. Learn more about full moon’s and moon phases at farmersalmanac.com. \nReserve lodging online: \nBook Now
