Live corn snake highlighted during presentation. About 1 hour. This is a Young People for Parks program. (YPP) \n\n\n\n5:00 p.m. Yips\, Hoots and Howls — Join the seasonal naturalist in Blackwater Lodge Lobby to learn about some of our creatures of the night that find winter time the best time to mate. Naturalist will be available for about 2 hours. YPP \n\n\n\n************************* \n\n\n\nSaturday\, January 6\, 2024Nature Center Open: 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n10 a.m. For the Birds! Birding with Laura — Birding at Blackwater Falls finds volunteer leader Laura Ceperley inviting you to join her this morning at the Harold Walters Nature Center for a morning stroll looking for feathered friends. Please arrive 10 minutes early to get organized and to work on any refresher instructions on sighting in your binoculars. Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk one or two miles along pavement\, gravel paths and park trails. The pace is slow in order to stop\, listen and look. Pack a bottle of water and a snack if desired. Laura Ceperley is a member of the Handlan Chapter of the Brooks Bird Club\, recognized by the Division of Natural Resources as a Master Naturalist\, a quilter\, and a guest naturalist with a focus on birding at multiple educational activities across West Virgin-ia. Blackwater Falls Naturalist Paulita Cousin\, a fellow birder\, welcomes Laura to Tucker County. YPP \n\n\n\n11:00 a.m. Youth Wild for Birds! — Join the naturalist’s for a beginners friendly game to learn how to identify birds\, learn about bird beaks from the seasonal naturalist and more. About 45 minutes. YPP \n\n\n\n12:00 p.m. Bird Nest – Join the park naturalist to hear about bird nest and perhaps try to weave your own nest. About 30 minutes. YPP \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. Youth Wild for Seeds — Join the seasonal naturalist for a program designed for children 1-6 years of age but all ages welcome to attend. Today we will be exploring seeds through stories\, activities and crafts. About 1 hour. Craft fee: $2.00. YPP \n\n\n\n12:30 p.m. Paracord Critter– Join the recreation assistant to create her choice of critter using paracord. Craft fee: $1.00 \n\n\n\n************************* \n\n\n\nSunday\, January 7\, 2024Nature Center Open: 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n10:00 a.m. Scenic Overlook Nature Stroll — Join the seasonal naturalist for a short walk along Pendleton Trace Trail to Pendleton Point Overlook and return to Nature Center. The walk includes interpretive stops along the way. About 1 mile. About 1 hour. YPP \n\n\n\n11:00 am. Raptors! – Join the recreation attendant to hearabout some birds of prey found in the Mountain state. Sorry\,No Live Birds. About 45 minutes. YPP \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. Movie Time – Join the attendant for a documentary into the economic and environmental injustices that resulted from coal company control in West Virginia. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate while watching the movie. Popcorn available by donation while supplies last. NR. About 1.5 hours. Microscopes limited and may need to be shared. Not suitable for children under age.  About 1 hour. YPP \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. Shaving Cream Art – Join the recreation assistant to learn about the color wheel and then use shaving cream and watercolor paint to tie dye a work of art. Craft fee $1.00. About 30 minutes. \n\n\n\n2:30 p.m. The Resilient Forest Film – Enjoy watching this documentary about the settlement\, early history\, industrialization\, folk life\, recreation\, conservation and forestry practices that have formed the cultural identity of residents of the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area. About 1 hour. NR. About 1 mile\, 70 minutes. YPP \n\n\n\n1:00 p.m. Youth Wild for Turtles! – Join the park naturalist to hear about the nature center turtles and their relatives found in West Virginia. About 1 hour.
