SUMMARY:Mid-October Outdoors: Pipestem
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy mid-October activities at Pipestem Resort October 17 – 22\, 2023. If you can’t attend activity\, be sure to stop by the Nature Center from 11:00am – 5:00pm daily to see our exhibits\, to ask questions about Pipestem and the area\, or to see birds that may be in the viewing area when you visit. \nTUESDAY\, October 17\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Barney Law Orchard WalkJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n2:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. (self paced) \nWEDNESDAY\, October 18\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo andlearn some interesting bird facts. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, October 19\, 2023 \n10:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birding apps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- An Extraordinary Ordinary MothMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nFRIDAY\, October 20\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \n6:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nLive Music! on the Patio at the Black Bear LoungeFeaturing Corey Lee McQuade(in case of inclement weather the show will be moved inside.) \nSATURDAY\, October 21\, 2023 \n1:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. If you treasure family stories\, this is a lovely program to attend. \n3:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once youfind them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nSUNDAY\, October 22\, 2023 \n8:30 am- Church ServiceMeet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service. \n10:00 am- Tower WalkMeet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short\, but steep hike to one of the best views in the park. \nYoung People for ParksYPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. SUMMARY:October Outdoors: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:Kick the weekend off on Friday\, October 20\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park. Take advantage of the activities or take a hike or walk to the falls area\, Gentle Trail or other pathways or enjoy a great meal at the Smokehouse Restaurant located in Blackwater Falls Lodge. \nFRIDAY\, October 20\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n11:00 p.m. Slime TimeJoin the naturalist to discover how some animals use slime for survival. Create a baggie of slime to take home compliments of Blackwater Falls. About 45 minutes. YPP \n2:00 p.m. Tree Scavenger Hunt & Cookie CraftJoin the seasonal naturalist to pick up a scavenger list and get creative on a tree cookie or create a unique tree cookie print using a torch (parent must be with child when using torch) outside on side porch. About 1 hour. YPP \n5:00 p.m. Ramblin’ Ranger Creature Feature- Going Batty!Find the seasonal park naturalist in Blackwater Falls Lodge Lobby for his display about bats of West Virginia and perhaps create your own flapper. Test your knowledge about bats\, pick up a trail map\, ask a question or simply stop to say hello. Naturalist display in lobby about 1.5. hours. YPP \n7:30 p.m. Rock-tober- Dig It!Join seasonal park naturalist and visiting geologist with the West Virginia Geologic and Economic Survey as he presents an evening presentation about “The Mountain State” in Blackwater Falls Lodge\, Shay Room. The program includes examples of rocks and an introduction to what lies beneath the surface in an informal yet interesting presentation. Program is about an hour long\, open to the public at no cost. YPP \nSATURDAY\, October 21\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. Rock-tober-Rockin’ It on the trail of GeologyJoin the visiting geologist and park naturalist at Pendleton Point Overlook as we ramble deeper into the rocks\, terrain and perhaps fossils that make Blackwater Falls State Park. Program begins at scenic view of Blackwater Canyon then optional ramble on a rock and root strewn path with a short but steep grade of less than ½ mile. About 90 minutes. Program is open to the public at no cost YPP \n11:30 a.m. Spooky SpidersJoin the seasonal naturalist to find out more about the spiders of West Virginia. The spiders and webbing are a popular Halloween decoration but are they as fearsome as believed? About 30 minutes. YPP \n2:00 p.m. Spooky Tales and Chili CampfireJoin the naturalists to hear some spooky tales while enjoying a cup of chili cooked over the coals. About 1 hour. SUMMARY:Quilter’s Getaway: North Bend
DESCRIPTION:The annual QUILTER’S GETAWAY is happening at North Bend State Park October 22-26\, 2023. Classes are coordinated and taught by Karen Harris.  The getaway activities are conducted in the Hughes and Douglas Conference Rooms and open from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Setup begins at 2:00 p.m. on October 22\, 2023. October 23-26 and from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on October 27\, 2023.   \nPreregistration is required. To enroll in the Quilter’s Getaway\, North Bend State Park will need your contact information that includes your name and mailing address\, phone number to contact\, email address\, and that you want to participate in the Quilter’s Getaway.  If you are staying overnight and sharing a room\, the name of your roommate is necessary.   Call North Bend at 304-643-2931 or email NorthBendSP@wv.gov to register or to receive a registration form and to reserve your room. \nOvernight packages staying at North Bend Lodge are 1 person\, 5 nights lodging\, and activities\, $439.95; 2 people sharing a room\, 5 nights lodging\, and activities\, $499.95.  Packages for room sharing or three or four participants are also available. To participate in the activity only  (no lodging) is $60. A drink station with coffee\, tea and water is provided. \nRemember booking the overnight room package does not reserve your seat for the Quilter’s Getaway happening October 22 – 27\, 2023.
