DESCRIPTION:Enjoy mid-October activities at Pipestem Resort October 17 – 22\, 2023. If you can’t attend activity\, be sure to stop by the Nature Center from 11:00am – 5:00pm daily to see our exhibits\, to ask questions about Pipestem and the area\, or to see birds that may be in the viewing area when you visit. \nTUESDAY\, October 17\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Barney Law Orchard WalkJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n2:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. (self paced) \nWEDNESDAY\, October 18\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo andlearn some interesting bird facts. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, October 19\, 2023 \n10:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birding apps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- An Extraordinary Ordinary MothMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nFRIDAY\, October 20\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \n6:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nLive Music! on the Patio at the Black Bear LoungeFeaturing Corey Lee McQuade(in case of inclement weather the show will be moved inside.) \nSATURDAY\, October 21\, 2023 \n1:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. If you treasure family stories\, this is a lovely program to attend. \n3:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once youfind them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nSUNDAY\, October 22\, 2023 \n8:30 am- Church ServiceMeet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service. \n10:00 am- Tower WalkMeet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short\, but steep hike to one of the best views in the park. \nYoung People for ParksYPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. Take advantage of the activities or take a hike or walk to the falls area\, Gentle Trail or other pathways or enjoy a great meal at the Smokehouse Restaurant located in Blackwater Falls Lodge. \nFRIDAY\, October 20\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n11:00 p.m. Slime TimeJoin the naturalist to discover how some animals use slime for survival. Create a baggie of slime to take home compliments of Blackwater Falls. About 45 minutes. YPP \n2:00 p.m. Tree Scavenger Hunt & Cookie CraftJoin the seasonal naturalist to pick up a scavenger list and get creative on a tree cookie or create a unique tree cookie print using a torch (parent must be with child when using torch) outside on side porch. About 1 hour. YPP \n5:00 p.m. Ramblin’ Ranger Creature Feature- Going Batty!Find the seasonal park naturalist in Blackwater Falls Lodge Lobby for his display about bats of West Virginia and perhaps create your own flapper. The program includes examples of rocks and an introduction to what lies beneath the surface in an informal yet interesting presentation. Program is about an hour long\, open to the public at no cost. Program begins at scenic view of Blackwater Canyon then optional ramble on a rock and root strewn path with a short but steep grade of less than ½ mile. About 90 minutes. Program is open to the public at no cost YPP \n11:30 a.m. Spooky SpidersJoin the seasonal naturalist to find out more about the spiders of West Virginia. The spiders and webbing are a popular Halloween decoration but are they as fearsome as believed? About 30 minutes. SUMMARY:Mary Ingles Trail Opens: Bluestone
DESCRIPTION:Retrace the steps of Mary Draper Ingles on this historic trail with Bluestone State Park naturalist Jonathan Lipscomb. The hike begins at the gate at the end of the Pits Rd boat launch area. The trail ends near Leatherwood Road and offers a fantastic view of Bluestone Dam.  \nEnjoy picture views of Bluestone Lake and wildlife viewing opportunities no matter the distance you choose on this out-and-back trip. Difficulty level is easy.  If you walk the whole distance it is a total of 3.8 miles.  Lipscomb will share the history of the area\, acknowledge the volunteers that accomplished an unbelievable amount of work\, and include identification of flora and fauna along the trail with fall colors as a backdrop. \nThe Mary Ingles Trail officially opens at Bluestone State Park on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023 with the hike starting at 10:00 a.m.  The activity is open to the public. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Evening: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 4:00 p.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, October 21\, 2023. \nThe tour ticket includes an afternoon snack\, “All About Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time walking to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sighting and souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. Hearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunset at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observation of other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity. DESCRIPTION:In October with dark skies and night sounds\, Watoga State Park is hosting Hoot & Holler presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC). This special program is scheduled on Saturday\, October 21\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Hoot & Holler reveals the bird says “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” \nPrograms such as Wings of Wonder are part of the Dark Sky certification requirements to maintain national status. We hope you enjoy these nature based and evening programs that keep us looking up into the night sky. \nThis evening program is all about owls native to West Virginia. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged in the Activity Building at Watoga State Park. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event.
