DESCRIPTION:Early October focus is typically on fall colors and a refreshing chill in the air at Pipestem State Park. If you’re not playing golf\, taking a zip line tour\, solo hiking\, at the indoor pool\, fishing\, or dining in the Bluestone Restaurant\, join us at these nature-based activities October 4 – 8\, 2023. Free to attend and open to the public. \nWEDNESDAY\, October 4\, 2023 \n10:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birding apps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo andlearn some interesting bird facts. If you’re curious about winter feeding\, types of food that attract birds and migration\, this is a great opportunity to chat and have some bingo fun. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, October 5\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Barney Law Orchard Walk *YPPJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n5:00 pm- What Should I Bring? *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a talk about what you should take with you when you explore the great outdoors. It’s good conversation. It’s outdoors. It’s free.(30 minutes) \nFRIDAY\, October 6\, 2023 \n2:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. \n7:00 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nSATURDAY\, October 7\, 2023 \n2:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once youfind them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n5:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nSPECIAL MUSIC!7:00 – 9:00 pm Live Music of Cody BraggEnjoy the sounds of native Southern West Virginian musician\, Cody Bragg as he performs classic country and original songs. Find Cody on the patio at Black Bear Lounge at Pipestem’ McKeever Lodge. In the event of rain this event will be moved inside. \nSUNDAY\, October 8\, 2023 \n8:30 am- Church ServiceMeet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service. \n10:00 am- Tower Walk *YPPMeet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short\, but steep hike to one of the best views in the park. Best views of West Virginia’s mountainous landscape in autumn. \n5:00 pm- Taxidermy Talk *YPPThe Nature Center is the place to be to learn about much of West Virginia’s native wildlife\, see our taxidermy collection\, and touch authentic animal pelts.(30min) \nYoung People for ParksYPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. SUMMARY:Mansion by Candlelight: Blennerhassett Island
DESCRIPTION:For two nights only!!! October 6 and October 7\, 2023\, as you board the Island Belle sternwheeler at Civitan Park in Belpre\, Ohio\, you begin your journey to Blennerhassett Island where an enchanted world only known to Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett existed over 200 years ago. Mansion by Candlelight on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park returns to the island in 2023. \nMany friends of the Blennerhassetts have gathered on the island for a wonderful evening of entertainment and you will also be a guest at the home of Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett. Transformed into an 18th-century party\, Blennerhassett Island and its magnificent mansion are illuminated by hundreds of candles and lantern boxes. \nDocents\, dressed in the style of the period\, will welcome you. The soft glow of candlelight will weave a mesmerizing spell ‘round about you as you listen to the music\, see 18th-century dances\, or watch a lively game of cards\, before strolling outside to enjoy the many planned activities on the island. \nWhile on the island\, plan to take a horse-drawn wagon ride\, visit the gift shop\, and warm yourself by an inviting bonfire at the servants’ party where another spirited party is going on. At the servants’ party you will hear Appalachian music\, see clogging\, watch apple butter being made\, and hear haunting stories of local folklore. All the evening’s excitement will likely make you hungry. \nA special candlelight “harvest supper” (picnic style meal) consisting of apple and rosemary roasted turkey\, sage and celery dressing\, mashed potatoes with roasted turkey gravy\, garden salad\, fresh snap beans\, cranberry sauce\, rolls\, and dessert offerings of apple or pumpkin pie\, with choice of coffee\, tea or water. Special children’s menu available. The Harvest Supper will be offered on both evenings with advance reservations. Harman’s Landing\, the island concession stand\, will also be open and offer limited items. \nTicket prices are $36 adults\, $26 children ages 3-12. Ticket includes a round-trip sternwheeler ride\, horse-drawn wagon ride\, and Mansion by Candlelight festivities. Harvest Supper cost is additional at $20 adult and $10 for children and is a charge in addition to the event ticket. \nReservations for the Harvest Supper are necessary by September 29\, 2022. About 1 hour. YPP \n12:30 p.m. . Owl-O-WeenJoin the seasonal naturalist\, to hear about owls that call West Virginia home or vacation in the mountain state. Learn about amazing adaptations of owls and try to talk like a barred owl. There are no live owls. This is an exceptional program. About one hour. This time it’s Tygart Lake State Park that greets state geologists to present a Friday evening program and Saturday walk/hike about the geology of West Virginia. \nHave you ever asked ‘Is there gold in these WV hills?’ or “What is an earthquake?” This program is for you. Youth and adults alike may skip a stone on water\, but do you know the geology of the Mountain State ? Geology rocks! Join us. \nYou’ll discover and learn about rocks\, minerals and fossils during an evening presentation held at Tygart Lake Lodge (conference room) at 6:30 p.m.\, Friday\, October 6\, 2023. The presentation includes some examples of rocks/fossils discussed. The program is free to attend and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Are you a youth (age 13-18) thinking of going into an environmental profession? Are you ready for this year’s Youth Challenge? Join us for the 48th annual weekend of learning at the 2023 Youth Environmental Conference at Cacapon State Park\, October 6 – 8\, 2023. \nThe weekend includes speakers in the environmental field\, tours of environmental industry and places of interest in the area. Among the activities planned for this year’s conference is a Saturday field trip with stops at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park\, Cool Spring Nature Preserve and Ridge State Fish Hatchery. The weekend also will feature environmental programs and guest speakers. \nThe weekend focuses is for middle school and high school students\, 13 – 18 years of age. Youth Environmental Program Scholarships are available as well as enrolling with a direct registration fee. \nThe Youth Environmental Conference and Program is made possible by the West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) outreach programs.
