SUMMARY:Spruce Hike: Cass
DESCRIPTION:Join a hike to the remote location of the former town of Spruce\, led by Naturalist Jaime Shearer at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. This hike combines hiking and historic interpretation of this fascinating site. \nMeet at the Cass Company Store Front Porch at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday\, September 30\, 2023. There is no fee to participate. \nShearer gives a brief orientation about the hike and directions to the drive to the starting point to start the hike. The drive takes approximately 15 minutes. Hikers are responsible for transportation. The hike duration is about three hours in length and approximately 4 miles of beginning-level hiking. Please wear comfortable and sturdy hiking boots or shoes and dress for the weather. \nAbout Spruce:Founded in 1904\, Spruce was once a bustling company town home to 300 people but was abandoned in the 1950s – while not a single building stands today\, the historic footprint of logging remains. You will be surrounded by the natural beauty of Pocahontas County while learning about the region’s timber and railroad industries and life in a rural company town. This hike is to a primitive region with limited facilities — make sure to wear water-resistant hiking footwear and pack a pair of binoculars\, and plenty of water. \nFor additional information email cassrailroadsp@wv.gov. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now
