SUMMARY:Leafpeeper Festival Activities: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:The Leafpepper Festival in Tucker County finds a variety of scheduled activities planned. For September 22-23\, 2023 these activities are hosted at Blackwater Falls State Park. Activities are open to the public and for all ages and are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. Find additional activities and events across Tucker County at the website canaanvalley.org. \nFRIDAY\, September 22\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. CHERRY LANE HIKEJoin the naturalist at Sled Run Fire Circle to enter a cathedral-like hardwood forest and earn West Virginia State Park Wonderfall hiking patch. The lycopodium and moss covered forest floor add a touch of green color throughout the year. Enjoy listening to and observing Birds of Blackwater Falls: brown creepers\, black capped chickadee and woodpeckers as the naturalists interpret the forest and bogs found along our travels. This jaunt is about 11⁄2 miles. The trail doesn’t change much in elevation but contains roots\, rocks and short inclines that can be muddy so boots and hiking/walking sticks are recommended. We pace ourselves. Please\, dress appropriately for the weather. If you show\, we go unless safety is an issue. Plan on about 90 minutes of time from start to conclusion. This program meets the Young People for Parks activity requirements. \n1:00 p.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin us in the Harold Walters Nature Center for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $3.00 \n3:00 p.m. PEPPERONI ROLLS & FLAMESJoin the seasonal naturalist\, to have fun with hot sparks \, perhaps some Trivia\, singing and storytelling. About 1-1/2 hours. SUMMARY:Fall Festival: Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:Fall Festival at Twin Falls is great fun! This year’s event is Saturday\, September 23\, 2023 Here are some activities and merriment you can expect: \nThe 2023 Fall Festival is staged at the Ballfield area at Twin Falls Resort State Park. \n10:00AM – 6:00PM  \nAll food and craft vendors \n10:00AM – 5:45PM  \nRIDES – Youth fun-train rides and any age hayrides will load up between the ballfield and amphitheater area. \nKID ZONE – Bouncy House  \nCHAINSAW ART – Hobby by Heart \nDemonstration near Shelter #4 \n1:00 – 4:00PM  \nCAR and BIKE SHOW – Amphitheater Parking Lot \nTYE DYE  – Find Tammy & the Tye-Dyers at a tent.  $10 for a shirt while shirt supplies and dye last. Three colors to work with. Always fun. \nBANDS – LIVE MUSIC \n10:00 a.m. – Noon – Payton Alexis \n1:00 – 3:00 p.m. – BK and the Bandagold \n4:00 – 7:00 p.m. – The George Dorne Band \nMusic is centerfield at the ballfield.  Bring a chair or blanket.  Enjoy live music in the mountains. \nHayrides\, food and live music. DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Morning Tours \nElk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State has occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 5:30 a.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, September 23\, 2023. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All about Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Kanawha State Forest nature center are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, September 23\, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. The educational birds program is a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis afternoon program is about raptors that are native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged outdoors at Kanawha State Forest nature center. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event.
