He is a singer/songwriter from Lewisburg\, WV and currently residing in Athens\, WV. His solo performances include fingerpicking and flatpicking guitar\, flatpicking dobro\, and clawhammer banjo. His original songs are inspired by old time traditional music\, local history\, and folk singer/songwriters. \n7:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. DESCRIPTION:The Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents the 2023 “Legacy of Mary Ingles” encampment and living history event. This year marks the 268th anniversary of Mary Ingles’ odyssey in 1755 as she was captured by\, and escaped from\, Shawnee Native Americans. This history and heritage program is September 15 – 17\, 2023 at Beech Fork State Park.The Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents a historical encampment based on research of the life of Mary Draper Ingles. \n• Friday activities are offered for school groups.• Saturday and Sunday encampment activities and presentations are open to the public free of charge. \nAbout Mary Draper Ingles \nIn 1755\, during the French and Indian War\, Ingles was a 23-year-old frontier wife living with her extended family at Drapers Meadow\, near present-day Blacksburg\, Virginia\, when a Shawnee war party attacked the settlement. The pioneer woman’s mother was among those killed in the raid\, while Ingles\, her two sons and a sister-in-law were among the settlers captured. Ingles was separated from her boys and taken to a Shawnee settlement near the site of present-day Portsmouth\, Ohio\, and then on to Big Bone Lick in north-central Kentucky. There\, she and a captive from another settlement managed to escape\, and follow the Ohio\, Kanawha\, and New rivers back to Drapers Meadow in a perilous 40-day trek. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now

DESCRIPTION:The National Wild Foods Association’s 54th annual Nature Wonder Weekend at North Bend State Park is brimming with richness in wild edibles – many are in your backyard. You’re invited to register and attend! \nThis weekend\, September 15-17\, 2023 is devoted to nature and includes featured leaders\, teachers and authors. This year the keynote speaker is Adam Haritan and Learn Your Land through his enjoyable and educational programs and workshops. He will excite and educate you about foraging for wild foods and show you how you can expand your appreciation and understanding of the natural world. West Virginia’s own naturalist\, author\, and outdoor-education specialist\, Bill Beatty of Bill Beatty Nature will be leading wild food walks and providing an interesting evening program on wild edible plants. \nMore information about Adam Haritan can be found at learnyourland.com and Bill Beatty can be found wvbirder.wordpress.com Participation in the weekend is fee based and advanced registration is required. \nA variety of hikes and multiple workshops include wild edible identification\, preparation and preservation. DESCRIPTION:Twin Falls features these great programs September 15-16\, 2023. Take advantage of these nature-based activities. There is no fee to attend programs or the nature center. Join us if you enjoy being outdoors\, interested in nature at Twin Falls\, and appreciate interacting with people. \nFRIDAY\, September 15\, 20238:00am – “Birding for Beginners”Meet the Park Naturalist at the front entry of the lodge. If you are curious about nature and want to learn more about what’s around you\, birding is a great skill and a fun hobby\, birding onlyrequires binoculars\, a good field guide and a positive attitude. This program lasts 45 minutes and requires walking. If you have binoculars\, please bring them. A field guide can be purchased in our gift shop with birds that frequent Twin Falls. (YPP) \n10:00am. – “Falls Trail Hike”Meet the Naturalist at the Falls Trail Parking Lot for a hike on the Falls Trail. Learn the history of the Falls\, the settlers who once called this area home. Get the question answered\, “Why do the falls not produce water year round”? Learn about the flora and fauna in this particular area. Trail is a loop and is 1-1/4 mile. Trail is rocky and tends to have standing water due to underground seeps so consider these obstacles when selecting footwear. (YPP) \n1:00 – 7:00 pm.The Nature Center will be open.Stop in and sign our guest book and let us know where you are from. Meet Willow\, Whiskey\, Coal\, Viper and Lucy\, our residents.There will be a keychain craft for kids available for a small fee $2; supplies are limited. \nSPECIAL ENTERTAINMENT6:00pm – 9:00pm. – “Lily Comer”Lily is a performing artist with a unique voice\, she has been compared to Patsy Cline who has had a huge impact on Lily. Other influences are Loretta Lynn\, Hank Williams Sr\, Johnny Cash\,and Dolly Parton. This is a FREE event and will be held in the Courtyard located at the Lodge. We do offer some seating\, feel free to bring a chair. If it rains the performance will be moved to the Dogwood Room located at the Lodge also. \n8:00pm. To 9:00pm. – “UVA Hike”You may think there is nothing to do after the sun sets for the day except to crawl into your sleeping bag and sleep until morning. But you’re wrong! Join Ace\, our Summer Naturalist at the Falls Trail for an exciting ultraviolet hike. Hiking/Walking at night is a wonderful opportunity that too few of us partake in. It’s just a little harder to see. When you move through the woods at night with an ultraviolet flashlight\, you open a whole new world. It’s like having a superpower to see invisible creatures and much more. When UV lights hit certain plants\, animals or minerals\, the chemicals in them release visible light. This is not a reflected light. The UV actually excites the chemicals in the object\, which release the visible light. The effects can actually be spectacular. Whites\, yellows\, orange\, and greens light up like some weird Christmas decorations. It’s something you need to just try. We have the lights for you to use. Dress accordingly\, long pants and sturdy shoes are a great idea. Allow this activity to last an Hour. (YPP) \nSATURDAY\, September 16\, 202310:00am. – 2:00pm.The Nature Center will be open.Stop in and sign our guest book and let us know where you are from. Meet Willow\, Whiskey\, Coal\, Viper and Lucy\, our residents. \n3:00pm. “Cliffside Trail Hike”Ace will be leading a hike on one of our second most visited trails. This is a 3 mile out and back trail with some rocky and steep areas. Allow 1 hour (YPP) \n5:00pm. – “Creek Crawl”Meet Ace our summer seasonal at the Falls Trail Parking area for an hour of splashing around in the creek. Help Ace look for crustaceans\, invertebrates and other aquatic life as you wadearound looking in cracks and tip rocks (((Rocks are always placed back the way you found them))). Plan on being wet from knees down\, creek bed can be very slippery due to algae that has formed on the rocks. Parents will be required to assist children under the age of 12. (YPP) Allow 1 Hour \n7:00pm – 8:30pm. – “Ghost Stories and Peach Cobbler”An evening with Bugs Stover and Park Naturalist Tammy Cooper.Bugs has been a part of the Twin Falls family for many years; he has seen things that he cannot explain lurking in the woods. There are legends of stories that happened here in the park many\, many years ago that have yet to be explained. \nTammy will be serving up her very own recipe of Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler baked over the campfire during the stories. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Morning: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State has occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 5:30 a.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Saturday\, September 16\, 2023. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All about Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, September 16\, 2023 at 2:30 p.m. The educational birds program is a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis afternoon program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend.
