(30 minutes) \nTUESDAY\, September 12\, 202310:00 am- Barney Law Orchard WalkJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n2:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. All ages welcomed. (self paced) \nWEDNESDAY\, September 13\, 20235:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo andlearn some interesting bird facts. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, September 14\, 202310:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birding apps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- An Extraordinary Ordinary MothMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nFRIDAY\, September 15\, 20235:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \n7 – 9 pm Live Music! w/Corey Lee McQuadeOutside of the Black Bear Lounge @ Pipestem Resort State ParkCorey Lee McQuade\, the other flatpicking dobro man\, carries on the dobro style of Tut Taylor flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. He is a singer/songwriter from Lewisburg\, WV and currently residing in Athens\, WV. His solo performances include fingerpicking and flatpicking guitar\, flatpicking dobro\, and clawhammer banjo. His original songs are inspired by old time traditional music\, local history\, and folk singer/songwriters. \n7:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nSATURDAY\, September 16th1:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. \n3:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once youfind them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nSUNDAY\, September 17\, 20238:30 am- Church ServiceMeet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service. \n10:00 am- Tower WalkMeet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short\, but steep hike to one of the best views at Pipestem Resort State Park. Its worth the climb for the view! \nYoung People for Parks – YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. DESCRIPTION:The sky’s the limit at Blackwater Falls State Park\, September 14-16\, 2023. This weekend is the annual Astronomy fall event and made possible by the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society. The activities/presentations are open to the public. \nFor 34 years\, Blackwater Falls State Park and the Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society have presented this free event under the park’s dark skies. Day events include guest speakers on topics for beginner to advanced astronomers. SUMMARY:Intro to Blacksmithing for Adults: Prickett's Fort
DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at blacksmithing at Prickett’s Fort State Park. Participants will receive one hour of personal one-on-one instruction from one of our skilled interpreters on Friday\, September 15\, 2023. \n\n\n\nOne-hour sessions are $20 per person and participants must be age 16 and older. One person per session. Please register by contacting the Foundation Office at 304-363-3030 to set up a date and time. SUMMARY:The Legacy of Mary Ingles: Beech Fork
DESCRIPTION:The Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents the 2023 “Legacy of Mary Ingles” encampment and living history event. This year marks the 268th anniversary of Mary Ingles’ odyssey in 1755 as she was captured by\, and escaped from\, Shawnee Native Americans. This history and heritage program is September 15 – 17\, 2023 at Beech Fork State Park.The Mary Ingles Trail Associates (MITA) presents a historical encampment based on research of the life of Mary Draper Ingles. \n• Friday activities are offered for school groups.• Saturday and Sunday encampment activities and presentations are open to the public free of charge. \nAbout Mary Draper Ingles \nIn 1755\, during the French and Indian War\, Ingles was a 23-year-old frontier wife living with her extended family at Drapers Meadow\, near present-day Blacksburg\, Virginia\, when a Shawnee war party attacked the settlement. The pioneer woman’s mother was among those killed in the raid\, while Ingles\, her two sons and a sister-in-law were among the settlers captured. Ingles was separated from her boys and taken to a Shawnee settlement near the site of present-day Portsmouth\, Ohio\, and then on to Big Bone Lick in north-central Kentucky. There\, she and a captive from another settlement managed to escape\, and follow the Ohio\, Kanawha\, and New rivers back to Drapers Meadow in a perilous 40-day trek. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now

SUMMARY:54th annual Nature Wonder Weekend: North Bend
DESCRIPTION:The National Wild Foods Association’s 54th annual Nature Wonder Weekend at North Bend State Park is brimming with richness in wild edibles – many are in your backyard. You’re invited to register and attend! \nThis weekend\, September 15-17\, 2023 is devoted to nature and includes featured leaders\, teachers and authors. This year the keynote speaker is Adam Haritan and Learn Your Land through his enjoyable and educational programs and workshops. He will excite and educate you about foraging for wild foods and show you how you can expand your appreciation and understanding of the natural world. West Virginia’s own naturalist\, author\, and outdoor-education specialist\, Bill Beatty of Bill Beatty Nature will be leading wild food walks and providing an interesting evening program on wild edible plants. \nMore information about Adam Haritan can be found at learnyourland.com and Bill Beatty can be found wvbirder.wordpress.com Participation in the weekend is fee based and advanced registration is required. \nA variety of hikes and multiple workshops include wild edible identification\, preparation and preservation.
