DESCRIPTION:In addition to enjoying fall colors painting the landscape\, enjoy these activities at Blackwater Falls State Park Sunday\, September 10 through Thursday\, September 14\, 2023. From geology to strolls and black bear aware programs\, find us at the nature center unless noted. \nSUNDAY\, September 10\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. Rockin’ on the Trail of GeologyJoin the seasonal naturalist at the Salt Sands Sign located at Pendleton Point Overlook to ramble deeper into the local rocks\, terrain and perhaps fossils of Blackwater Falls. About 1 hour\, some walking. Participants receive a free Geology of Blackwater Falls book. YPP \n12:00 p.m. Fossil & Geode CraftJoin the staff to create a fossil or work at exposing a geode. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n2:00 p.m. Creature Feature – Fisher (Pekania pennanti) \nJoin the seasonal naturalist to hear about this member of the weasel family. Although the name suggests this mammal eats fish\, it typically does not. About 30 minutes. YPP \nMONDAY\, September 11\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. Mammals Nature Film & Finger PaintingJoin the recreation assistant to hear amazing facts and folklore about our favorite furry animals. Optional: Finger Painting for free. YPP \n1:00 p.m. Finding Your Way & CraftJoin the recreation attendant to learn how to use a compass and map with a short film. Optional: Use markers and other materials to create a compass. Supplies limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \nTUESDAY\, September 12\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. History StrollJoin the park naturalist at the trailhead of Gentle Trail for an easy stroll to a view of Blackwater Falls while hearing a little about our area history\, Flora and Fauna. About 1 hour. 1/4 mile. YPP \n3:00 p.m. Raptors of West VirginiaJoin the recreation attendant to learn about some of West Virginia’s birds of prey. Sorry\, No Live Animals. Find us at the nature center. About 45 minutes. YPP \nWEDNESDAY\, September 13\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. Black Bear AwareJoin the park naturalist to hear about West Virginia’s state mammal and learn tips to protect you\, your pet and Black Bears. Among the biggest land mammals on the planet\, bears require a lot of resources to survive and must use all their skill\, brawn and brains to get what they need whether foraging for food\, defending themselves or raising cubs. About 1 hour. YPP \n1:30 p.m. Light Pollution and Solution YouJoin the park naturalist to learn about light pollution and the impact it has on the world and you. About 45 minutes YPP \nTHURSDAY\, September 14\, 2023 \n2:00 p.m. Fall Wildflower WalkJoin the seasonal naturalist for an easy stroll around the nature center in search of fall wildflowers. About 1 hour. 1/2 mile. YPP \n3:00 p.m. Suncatcher CraftJoin the staff to use colorful paint on a suncatcher. Craft Fee: $1.00_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \nWant to STARGAZE on your own?Blackwater Falls as a permit process for folks to Stargaze After Hours.Get the permit in the Harold Walters Nature Center during normal business hours. \nThe designated stargazing locations at Blackwater Falls are at two locations:1 Harold Walters Nature Center Parking Lot2. Pendleton Point Overlook Parking Lot \nRoaming the park during quiet hours when the park is closed (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) is discouraged. But stargazing is possible with the permit at the two designated locations that are super areas with very dark skies. \nThe permit lets park security know you’ve registered. As a reminder sleeping/camping at locations is not permitted. Individuals must actively be stargazing and remain near their parked vehicle. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now

DESCRIPTION:Greens give way to golds\, reds and oranges leaf colors of the deciduous forest at Pipestem Resort State Park. Find these activities and enjoy being outside September 11-17\, 2023. \nMONDAY September 11\, 20231:00 pm- Taxidermy Talk *YPPCome by the Nature Center to learn about some of West Virginia’s native wildlife\, see our taxidermy collection\, and touch authentic animal pelts.(30min) \n5:00 pm- What Should I Bring? *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a talk about what you should take with you when you explore the great outdoors. (30 minutes) \nTUESDAY\, September 12\, 202310:00 am- Barney Law Orchard WalkJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n2:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. All ages welcomed. (self paced) \nWEDNESDAY\, September 13\, 20235:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo andlearn some interesting bird facts. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, September 14\, 202310:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birding apps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- An Extraordinary Ordinary MothMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nFRIDAY\, September 15\, 20235:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \n7 – 9 pm Live Music! w/Corey Lee McQuadeOutside of the Black Bear Lounge @ Pipestem Resort State ParkCorey Lee McQuade\, the other flatpicking dobro man\, carries on the dobro style of Tut Taylor flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. He is a singer/songwriter from Lewisburg\, WV and currently residing in Athens\, WV. His solo performances include fingerpicking and flatpicking guitar\, flatpicking dobro\, and clawhammer banjo. His original songs are inspired by old time traditional music\, local history\, and folk singer/songwriters. \n7:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nSATURDAY\, September 16th1:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. \n3:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Once youfind them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nSUNDAY\, September 17\, 20238:30 am- Church ServiceMeet us at the Amphitheater for Sunday service. \n10:00 am- Tower WalkMeet in the parking lot of the Bolar Observation Tower located near the main entrance of the park for a short\, but steep hike to one of the best views at Pipestem Resort State Park. Its worth the climb for the view! \nYoung People for Parks – YPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP.
