Find these activities and enjoy being outside as autumn approaches September 4-10\, 2023. \nMONDAY\, September 4\, 2023 \n1:00 pm- Taxidermy Talk *YPPCome by the Nature Center to learn about some of West Virginia’s native wildlife\, seeour taxidermy collection\, and touch authentic animal pelts. (30min) \n5:00 pm- What Should I Bring? *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a talk about what you should take with you when you explore the great outdoors. (30 minutes) \nTUESDAY\, September 5\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Barney Law Orchard WalkJoin us at the Nature Center for a nearby walk to the homesite and orchard of former park resident\, Barney Law. \n2:00 pm- Turtle Game *YPPMeet in the front yard of the Nature Center to learn about turtles while we play an outdoor game. (self paced) \nWEDNESDAY\, September 6\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Bird Bingo *YPPCome by the Activity Shelter at the Nature Center for a few rounds of Bird Bingo and learn some interesting bird facts. (45 minutes) \nTHURSDAY\, September 7\, 2023 \n10:30 am- It’s For the Birds *YPPMeet staff inside the Nature Center for a conversation on our bird feeding space\, birdingapps commonly used\, and common bird feeder birds. Enjoy the center or stick close to our bird watching area for some relaxing birding. Birds viewed during this activity will be submitted to ebird.org as a citizen science opportunity. (30min) \n5:00 pm- An Extraordinary Ordinary MothMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \nFRIDAY\, September 8\, 2023 \n5:00 pm- Wildlife Game *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. (30 min) \nLive Music!7:00 – 9:00pmFeaturing Corey Lee McQuade outside of the Black Bear Lounge @ Pipestem Resort State Park \nCorey Lee McQuade\, the other flatpicking dobro man\, carries on the dobro style of Tut Taylor flatpicking the resophonic guitar aka dobro. He is a singer/songwriter from Lewisburg\, WV and currently residing in Athens\, WV. His solo performances include fingerpicking and flatpicking guitar\, flatpicking dobro\, and clawhammer banjo. His original songs are inspired by old time traditional music\, local history\, and folk singers/songwriters. \n7:30 pm- Campfire Time! *YPPMeet at the fire ring behind the Campground store to learn how to make char cloth\, a fire-starting assistance\, and make fire using this primitive fire starter. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. (1 hour) \nSATURDAY\, September 9\, 2023 \n1:00 pm- Pipestem Heritage *YPPMeet at the Nature Center for an in depth tour of our heritage structures and to see pictures from the past taken in our own park. \n3:00 pm- Nature Hunt *YPPMeet at the Nature Center. We will hand out a list of objects to look for in Nature. Onceyou find them\, you receive a prize! (30 minutes) \n6:00 pm- Beginner Archery *YPPMeet at the Campground store to practice your archery skills. (1 hour) \nYoung People for ParksYPP is an environmental education program for children ages 6-16. To complete the program\, participants attend three specified activities during their stay. These programs are indicated by *YPP. From geology to strolls and black bear aware programs\, find us at the nature center unless noted. \nSUNDAY\, September 10\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. Rockin’ on the Trail of GeologyJoin the seasonal naturalist at the Salt Sands Sign located at Pendleton Point Overlook to ramble deeper into the local rocks\, terrain and perhaps fossils of Blackwater Falls. About 1 hour\, some walking. Participants receive a free Geology of Blackwater Falls book. YPP \n12:00 p.m. Fossil & Geode CraftJoin the staff to create a fossil or work at exposing a geode. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n2:00 p.m. Creature Feature – Fisher (Pekania pennanti) \nJoin the seasonal naturalist to hear about this member of the weasel family. Although the name suggests this mammal eats fish\, it typically does not. About 30 minutes. YPP \nMONDAY\, September 11\, 2023 \n10:00 a.m. Mammals Nature Film & Finger PaintingJoin the recreation assistant to hear amazing facts and folklore about our favorite furry animals. YPP \nWEDNESDAY\, September 13\, 2023Nature Center Open: 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. Black Bear AwareJoin the park naturalist to hear about West Virginia’s state mammal and learn tips to protect you\, your pet and Black Bears. Among the biggest land mammals on the planet\, bears require a lot of resources to survive and must use all their skill\, brawn and brains to get what they need whether foraging for food\, defending themselves or raising cubs. About 1 hour. YPP \n1:30 p.m. Light Pollution and Solution YouJoin the park naturalist to learn about light pollution and the impact it has on the world and you. About 45 minutes YPP \nTHURSDAY\, September 14\, 2023 \n2:00 p.m. Fall Wildflower WalkJoin the seasonal naturalist for an easy stroll around the nature center in search of fall wildflowers. Craft Fee: $1.00_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ \nWant to STARGAZE on your own?Blackwater Falls as a permit process for folks to Stargaze After Hours.Get the permit in the Harold Walters Nature Center during normal business hours. \nThe designated stargazing locations at Blackwater Falls are at two locations:1 Harold Walters Nature Center Parking Lot2. Pendleton Point Overlook Parking Lot \nRoaming the park during quiet hours when the park is closed (10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) is discouraged. But stargazing is possible with the permit at the two designated locations that are super areas with very dark skies. \nThe permit lets park security know you’ve registered. SUMMARY:Elk Management Tour - Morning: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Elk Management Tours in West Virginia are designed to learn about and visit where the reintroduction of elk in the Mountain State has occurred. The three-to-four-hour activity begins at 5:30 a.m. at Chief Logan Lodge\, Sunday\, September 10\, 2023. The tour ticket includes a light breakfast\, “All about Elk” conversation\, transportation to the elk translocation site\, and outdoor time to experience the terrain\, vegetation\, elk habitat and potential sightings and a souvenir. Tours are limited to 12 participants and reservations are required in advance. Masks may be necessary during transportation. \nHearing or seeing an elk bull or cow is not guaranteed. The elk are free roaming and not penned. Sunrise at the tour site is outstanding in addition to looking and listening for elk and observing other wildlife or wildlife signs in the area. Walking/hiking is involved. \nThese considerations are necessary: carry-on items must be small to accommodate passengers more comfortably and only if necessary. The tour is not recommended for youth under age 12. Pets are not permitted. Participants should refrain from use of scented products. Packing food on the tour is discouraged – wild animals have excellent sensory abilities and may react adversely. Sturdy\, closed-toe shoes or boots are required\, no flip-flops or sandals. Long pants should be worn. Up to two miles of walking may occur at the management area with some moderate inclines\, but all at a reasonable pace. Binoculars are available to borrow. \nThe cost is $34 per person. Ticket or package prices include taxes\, but not gratuity. Advanced reservations are required for tours and may be purchased online and found on the Book Now link\, https://wvstateparks.com/things-to-do/elk-management-tours. \nLauren Cole\, Assistant Superintendent/Biologist is the tour leader.
