DESCRIPTION:Cacapon State Park activities featuring Vernal Pools\, Monarchs\, and Micro-vision worlds are some of the many weekend activities August 28-31\, 2023. These activities and others are conducted or begin at the nature center unless noted. Open to the public and free to attend unless indicated. \nThe nature center is open daily from 9:30AM – 4:30PM and closes during planned programs/presentations or noted in the daily schedule. \nMONDAY\, August 28\, 2023 \n10:00AM Tai ChiThis class will help increase balance\, flexibility\, and focus on connection to mind\, body\, & spirit. Location is at Cacapon Lodge. \nSPECIAL PROGRAM10:00AM Vernal Pool SurveyLearn all about vernal pools and what types of amphibians live there. These surveys help multiple agencies throughout the region: WV DNR\, WV DEP\, WV Watershed Improvement Branch\, US Forest Service and USGS Amphibian and Monitoring Initiative. Learn how to be a citizen scientist and report your findings on inaturalist. Homeschool families may find this as a good educational opportunity. YPP \n1:00PM Be a Citizen ScientistDid you know that you can help the monarch migration by reporting your sightings of Monarch butterflies to journey.north.org? We’ll go on a small trek looking at plants & animals through magnifying glasses\, a stereomicroscope for items collected and look at prepared slides in a compound slides. YPP \n1:00PM Full Blue MoonThis is the second full moon in August. Learn about the moon cycle and enjoy an activity. YPP \nCome and visit the Tom Ambrose Nature Center! The nature center is a great stop for all ages\, showcasing exhibits on the park history and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Morgan 1934-41. DESCRIPTION:Blackwater Falls State Park offers a variety of activities to jump start September. Activities are open to the public and for all ages.The Nature Center is open Sunday – Friday from 10:30AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM-7:00PM unless noted. The boathouse is open 10:30AM – 5:00PM Wednesday – Sunday until Labor Day and closed on Monday and Tuesday\, except on a holiday. \nMONDAY\, August 28\, 202311:30 a.m. FINDING YOUR WAY AND CRAFTView a short film about reading and taking a bearing\, what contour lines indicate\, magnetic declination and more. Program includes the creation of a cardboard compass for $2.00. Supplies limited to first come basis. About 1 hour. YPP \n2:00 p.m. BEARS NATURE FILMWatch this film about the remarkable animal family that has long captured the human imagination from the mighty grizzly bear to the endearing spectacled bear. YPP \nTUESDAY\, August 29\, 202310:00 a.m. Stemwinder Trail HikeJoin the naturalist’s at the trailhead of Davis Trail (old stables/petting zoo) for a hike along three park trails Boots recommended. About 2 miles\, 2 hours. YPP \n11:00 a.m. The Resilient Forest FilmJoin the attendant to learn about the early history\, industrialization\, folklife\, recreation\, conservation and forestry practices of the Appalachian Forest Heritage Area. About 1 hour. YPP \n1:00 p.m. SUPERSIZE CraftJoin the staff to paint an oversized flower or leaf. Craft fee: $2.00 \n2:30 p.m. MEET AND GREET THE TURTLESJoin the naturalist to meet some of the nature center turtles\, hear their story and perhaps a little about relatives found in the state of West Virginia. Includes a kid friendly craft for free. About 45 minutes. YPP \nWEDNESDAY\, August 30\, 2023No Scheduled Activities – Find a park trail or overlook today and enjoy. \nTHURSDAY August 31\, 202311:00 a.m. MUSHROOMS OF WEST VIRGINIAMeet the seasonal naturalist\, for this presentation about some mushrooms found in West Virginia. About 1 hour. YPP \n12:30 p.m. I spy Way up HighJoin the attendant to create a weather window and explore the world of clouds. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n1:30 p.m. FOSSIL CRAFTJoin the seasonal naturalist\, to hear a little about the geology of the area then create a fossil. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n4:30 p.m. WHO WAS PORTE CRAYON?Join the seasonal naturalist on the boardwalk patio (near the swing) to Blackwater Falls to learn a little history of the area and hear about Porte Crayon adventures. Look for Kenny. About 1 hour. YPP \nFRIDAY\, September 1\, 202311:00 a.m. USEFUL PLANTS AND BASKET CRAFTJoin Kenny to learn about some plants used for cordage then try to weave a small basket. . The craft session is limited to 10 participants on a first come first serve basis. You do not have to participate in the craft to listen to the cordage portion of the program.
