SUMMARY:“COAL” - An Outdoor Drama : Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:“COAL” is the August theater production staged and performed at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater at Chief Logan State Park. The drama begins at 8:30 p.m. This outdoor theater drama is presented nine evenings in August\, 2023. \nAccording to www.thearacomastoryinc.com\, “COAL” transports you to the coal mines of Logan\, West Virginia\, during the Great Mine Wars and the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921. You will witness the struggles\, triumphs\, and sacrifices of hardworking men who toil beneath the earth in this inspired by true events story about Jake Coleman who mined the coal and struggled to support his family\, his wife Opal who had high hopes for her family\, his young son Matthew who wanted to be a union miner\, and his daughter Laurel who worked at the coal company’s store and falls in love with a coal company man. \n“COAL” features a cast of twenty and includes several Broadway World Award winners from 2021’s production. “COAL” received “Best Play” honors along with “Best Performer”\, “Best Supporting Performer”\, “Best Costume Design”\, “Best Direction”\, “Best Lighting Design”\, “Best Scenic Design”\, and “Best Sound Design.” \nTickets may be purchased in advance at Chief Logan State Park Lodge and at Chief Logan Museum/Park Office. SUMMARY:Look Up! Stars and NASA Stardome: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:The NASA Stardome-Stories in the Sky! is back at Blackwater Falls State Park nature center on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023. There are four 45 minute programs that occur inside the dome\, which is inside the nature center. Those times are 1:00 p.m.\, 2:30 p.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:00 p.m. There is no fee to participate\, but there is a preregistration opportunity to be sure you have a seat inside the dome. \nNASA STARDOME-STORIES IN THE SKY! participants enter the star dome through a short tunnel and introduced to a “star-filled” sky. Your host naturalist will navigate with the use of a digital planetarium through some common constellations and stars. Participants will be introduced to Greek Mythological characters\, how ancient people related to constellations\, then used their imagination to create a pattern in the stars with a story. About 45 minutes. Seating inside the dome is limited to first come first serve. Pre-registration available beginning at 11 a.m. on August 19th morning or take a chance that space is available and show up at time of program. About 45 minutes. The activity is for any age. YPP. [This activity is super helpful when you’re out on a dark night looking up at stars and identifying constellations\, etc.]And now the rest of the scheduled activities for the weekend of August 19-20\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park. Activities are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. Nature Center is open Sunday – Friday from 10:30AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM-7:00PM. The boathouse is open 10:30AM – 5:00PM Wednesday – Sunday until Labor Day and closed on Monday and Tuesday\, except on a holiday. \n10:30 p.m. SKULLS\, SKINS\, SCAT\, and SLIME!Join the park naturalist\, on the side porch of Nature Center to learn how to identify a predator or prey skull\, the purpose of fur and how to identify scat. Afterwards\, create a small baggie of slime to take home. About one hour. No walking involved. All ages are welcome. DESCRIPTION:The 16th annual Art-in-the-Park series is a juried art fair that provides public access to fine artisans located in the Berkeley Springs region of West Virginia. Nationally known artists exhibit at this event\, and the best part is artisans are local residents. \n\n\n\nShows are rain or shine from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and located across the street from the Farmers Market. Art-in-the-Park is free to attend and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:One of the coolest flying creations of all time has to be the dragonfly. Together\, we will paint one inbeautiful shades of blues and greens and make some 3D mesh wings too! \n\n\n\nArt on the Island-Dragonfly is on Sunday\, August 20\, 2023. Take the noon boat\, bring or buysome snacks on the Island\, and let’s paint this oversized acrylic flower together on a gallerywrapped canvas. Class typically takes about 2 hours. Ages 16+\, 8 spaces available.
