DESCRIPTION:“COAL” is the August theater production staged and performed at the Liz Spurlock Amphitheater at Chief Logan State Park. The drama begins at 8:30 p.m. This outdoor theater drama is presented nine evenings in August\, 2023. \nAccording to www.thearacomastoryinc.com\, “COAL” transports you to the coal mines of Logan\, West Virginia\, during the Great Mine Wars and the Battle of Blair Mountain in 1921. You will witness the struggles\, triumphs\, and sacrifices of hardworking men who toil beneath the earth in this inspired by true events story about Jake Coleman who mined the coal and struggled to support his family\, his wife Opal who had high hopes for her family\, his young son Matthew who wanted to be a union miner\, and his daughter Laurel who worked at the coal company’s store and falls in love with a coal company man. \n“COAL” features a cast of twenty and includes several Broadway World Award winners from 2021’s production. “COAL” received “Best Play” honors along with “Best Performer”\, “Best Supporting Performer”\, “Best Costume Design”\, “Best Direction”\, “Best Lighting Design”\, “Best Scenic Design”\, and “Best Sound Design.” \nTickets may be purchased in advance at Chief Logan State Park Lodge and at Chief Logan Museum/Park Office. SUMMARY:Wings of Wonder-Birds of Prey: Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Twin Falls State Park are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis evening program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged in Shelter No. 4. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. SUMMARY:Blackbird Knob Hike: Canaan Valley
DESCRIPTION:The Blackbird Knob Hike is special and for eight hikers a great day for a long hike at Canaan Valley Resort.  Beginning at 9:00am and returning by 4:00pm\, this hike requires advance registration.  This Blackbird Knob Hike also falls on National Trails Day.  \nParticipants will be shuttled to the walk area. The hike is physically challenging as we will encounter rough terrain and water crossings. According to Dave Vance\, hike coordinator  “We will view vistas\, high meadows\, and spectacular views. It’s is a great longer distance hike.” \nWaterproof shoes or boots\, and clothing for changing weather conditions are suggested. Please pack a lunch\, snacks or water. Walk is approximately 6 miles in length and is not recommended for smaller children. Pre-Registration Required by Friday at 10:00 am at the Beech Club is necessary.  The hike fee is $15 per person. SUMMARY:Look Up! Stars and NASA Stardome: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:The NASA Stardome-Stories in the Sky! is back at Blackwater Falls State Park nature center on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023. There are four 45 minute programs that occur inside the dome\, which is inside the nature center. Those times are 1:00 p.m.\, 2:30 p.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:00 p.m. There is no fee to participate\, but there is a preregistration opportunity to be sure you have a seat inside the dome. \nNASA STARDOME-STORIES IN THE SKY! participants enter the star dome through a short tunnel and introduced to a “star-filled” sky. Your host naturalist will navigate with the use of a digital planetarium through some common constellations and stars. Participants will be introduced to Greek Mythological characters\, how ancient people related to constellations\, then used their imagination to create a pattern in the stars with a story. About 45 minutes. Seating inside the dome is limited to first come first serve. Pre-registration available beginning at 11 a.m. on August 19th morning or take a chance that space is available and show up at time of program. About 45 minutes. The activity is for any age. YPP. [This activity is super helpful when you’re out on a dark night looking up at stars and identifying constellations\, etc.]And now the rest of the scheduled activities for the weekend of August 19-20\, 2023 at Blackwater Falls State Park. Activities are hosted at the nature center unless indicated otherwise. Nature Center is open Sunday – Friday from 10:30AM – 5:00PM and Saturday from 10:00AM-7:00PM. The boathouse is open 10:30AM – 5:00PM Wednesday – Sunday until Labor Day and closed on Monday and Tuesday\, except on a holiday. \n10:30 p.m. SKULLS\, SKINS\, SCAT\, and SLIME!Join the park naturalist\, on the side porch of Nature Center to learn how to identify a predator or prey skull\, the purpose of fur and how to identify scat. It is anawesome structure and the program elevates its long history with the Blennerhassetts. Join usSaturday\, August 19\, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. \nTake a “historic look-back” at the Putnam’s trip to the Ohio frontier\, life at Farmer’s Castle during the hostilities\, the building of their home (Maple Shade) and the farmstead\, the Blennerhassetts as neighbors and friends\, and their deaths only 3 days apart. \nFive generations of this Putnam Family have called the Putnam-Houser House their home. SUMMARY:Build a Bat Box: Blackwater Falls
DESCRIPTION:Note: This event has been rescheduled for October 28\, 2023 as part of  the “Mysterious Moon” special program. \nMake your own bat box from a precut kit to take home. Participants will use a screw driver and wood screws to assemble boxes together. Instructor Sam Muncy will be available to assist with assembly. A template and instructions for cutting and making more boxes will be handed out along with some information about how to attract bats. \nView a PowerPoint presentation of bats and bat colonies across West Virginia and the United States. Bats are the only mammals capable of true and sustained flight. Bats can eat up to 1\,200 mosquitoes an hour. Join us in building a bat box and learning more about these important animals in our ecosystem.If you have bat photograph(s) send them digitally to instructor sam@samandsharonenterprises.com and be a part of the program. \nAbout ‘Sam’ Muncy\, Jr.Charles H. “Sam” Muncy\, Jr. graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Civil Engineering and is a practicing Professional Civil Engineer and also holds registration as a Professional Surveyor. Sam really enjoys exploring and discovering the hidden gems of West Virginia natural heritage as a Master Naturalist certified by the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. Being a Master Naturalist gives Sam the opportunity to support our state’s wonderful park system and to share his appreciation for our natural surroundings with visitors to our parks. \nMuncy is the treasurer of the West Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation.
