Who knows what critters we might catch! \n2:00 pm- Ultimate FrisbeeMeet at the Campground Store to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Frisbee is a teamsport which mixes elements of football\, basketball\, and rugby\, substituting the ball with a flying discand the referee with the spirit of the game. (1hour) \nTuesday\, August 1\, 2023 \n10:00 am- Taxidermy Talk *YPPCome by the Nature Center to learn about some of West Virginia’s native wildlife\, see our taxidermycollection\, and touch authentic animal pelts. \n1:00 pm Creepy Crawly Bug Craft *YPPJoin staff at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center for a craft showcasing the various insects crawling and flying around outside. We will talk about the different signs and behaviors of adult white-tailed deer and give participants a chance to touch a deer pelt. Additionally\, we will discuss what to do if you come across a fawn in the wild. \n1:00 pm- Plaster Tracks *YPPMeet in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to make a plaster animal track.Drying times may vary due to weather conditions\, so please allow a minimum of 30 minutes for your track to dry and be ready to take home. \n4:00 pm- Shaving Cream PaintingMeet at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to create a fun painted craft to take home. No matches involved. We will also roast some marshmallows. Bring a camping chair if you have one. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River. Activities at Holly River State Park are free to attend and open to the public and our cabin and camping guests. \nTHURSDAY\, August 3\, 20232 pm – SNAKES: Which 2 are venomous?Learn to identify WV’s only 2 venomous snakes\, with authentic replicas of the Copperhead & Eastern Rattlesnake\, and learn how helpful all our reptiles can be. Windy Gap yard \n4 pm – CREEK CRITTERSWear water shoes or old tennis shoes – we’ll be looking for larvae of insects under rocks & examining them under magnification\, talking about their life cycles & learning which ones indicate clean water. Find naturalist Jane in Windy Gap schoolyard down by the creek. \nFRIDAY\, August 4\, 202310 am – HIKE HIGH ROCK TRAIL with Naturalist Jane.Wear sturdy shoes & bring water. A hiking stick or trek poles are also useful. Meet on the office porch @ 9:45 am or at the trailhead bridge below Cabin 9 at 10 am. (1.5 miles/ 2 hours) \n2 pm – VERY FISHYLearn the parts of a fish\, fold an origami fish to take home\, then feed baby trout in our trout rearing pond. Meet the naturalist in the Old Pavilion. This activity is for all ages. Fun folding paper into fish and then visiting the rearing pond! \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the Holly River State Park office. \n7:30 pm – WANDERING MINSTRELNaturalist Jane will serenade you with old mountain ballads or WV songs or your requests if she knows them. Come sing along. \nSATURDAY\, August 5\, 202310 am – NATURE CRAFT: Pnut butter Pinecone Bird FeedersMeet the naturalist in Windy Gap Schoolyard (Balli Shelter if rainy) to make & take home a bird feeder to hang in your yard. All materials provided. \n2 pm – TREE ID WALKMeet on office porch picnic tables\, take a stroll around the building to learn a few of our many Holly River trees by their leaf shapes & barks. Participants will receive one hour of personal one-on-one instruction from one of our skilled interpreters on Friday\, August 4 or Saturday\, August 5\, 2023. \nOne-hour sessions are $20 per person and participants must be age 16 and older. DESCRIPTION:Live birds of prey at Chief Logan State Park Lodge are presented by the Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) on Saturday\, August 4\, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. The educational birds program is a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. \nThis afternoon program is about raptors that are native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged indoors at Chief Logan Lodge conference center. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. An excellent presentation for all ages and in particular youth interested in wildlife conservation and education. \nThe restaurant at the lodge is open and will have a lunch special for folks arriving prior to the program for purchase.
