SUMMARY:Another Really Great Weekend: Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:Visit Twin Falls and enjoy these activities July 28-29\, 2023. Butterflies\, solar ovens\, and a glow walk invites you to attend. Fee free. Open to the public. Family friendly. Join us!! \nFRIDAY\, July 28\, 202310:00am. – “BE A FRIEND TO POLLINATORS”Pollinators are in trouble! Bees\, bats and other animal pollinators face many challenges in the modern world. Habitat loss\, disease\, parasites\, and environmental contaminants have all contributed to the decline of many species of pollinators. Meet at the Amphitheater area to learn how you can help. Program will last around 30 minutes. This program will not be canceled due to rain. (YPP) Lead by Ace England Our Summer Naturalist\, Ace is new to the game but is very excited to lead and learn about the natural world. Participants will receive a handout with information on how you can help pollinators and also a seed packet containing seeds to get your own garden started. \n12:00pm. – “FALLS TRAIL HIKE”Hike\, stroll\, or walk whichever is best for you. Meet at the Falls Trail parking lot located near the front entrance of the park to visit both the Foley Falls and the Blackfork Falls and get a look at the two famous falls that was the namesake to “Twin Falls’ Resort State Park. This is aloop trail and is 1 ¼ mile long very rocky along the bottom portion of the trail\, the trail tends to hold water so it can be muddy and soft in areas. Wear sturdy boots\, bring some water and bug spray and join us. (YPP) Lead by Ace England Summer Naturalist. \n2:00pm – 4:00pm NATURE CENTER r will be open. \nSATURDAY\, July 29\, 202312:00pm. “SOLAR OVENS”Bring the kids to Shelter 4 to make solar ovens with Ace our Summer Naturalist. The solar oven you build in this activity is a relatively simple one made from a pizza box\, aluminum foil\, plastic wrap\, and a sheet of paper. Parents are encouraged to help in the activity. (YPP) Allow 1 hour \n2:00pm. To 4:00pm. – NATURE CENTER will be open. \n5:00pm. “SUMMER BUTTERFLIES”Did you know that the earliest known butterfly fossils date from approximately 40 to 50 million years ago? That’s a really long time ago and these beautiful insects are very much carrying on their genes year after year for hopefully millions more. \nWest Virginia hosts 138 species of butterflies. Meet at the Amphitheater area as Ace tries and net some species that call Twin Falls home. Allow 30 minutes for the program. (YPP) \n9:00pm. “GLOW WALK”Let’s light it up! The walk will be on the cart path of the front 9 of our beautiful Twin Falls championship golf course. Bring your glow sticks and get as crazy as you can to glow\, we will offer glow sticks to participants so no need to stress if you don’t have what you need\, we have you covered! You’re invited and encouraged to visit our trails\, the falls areas\, the Nature Center\, and Pendleton Lake. \nFRIDAY\, July 28\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \nNight Flyers3:30 p.m. BATS!Join the naturalist or this presentation about Bats. Perhaps play a bat and moth game with the naturalist. YPP \n4:30 p.m. LIGHT POLLUTION AND SOLUTION YOU!!Join the park naturalist in Blackwater Falls Lodge for a presentation about light pollution. About 45 minutes. This is a great program for lighting pathways andsecurity. YPP \n5:00 p.m. RAMBLIN’ RANGERFind the naturalist in Blackwater Lodge Lobby to ask questions about park trails\, find out the weekend activities or simply check out their mystery object of the day and perhaps do a fun activity. The naturalist will be available until about 7:00 p.m. YPP \n7:30 p.m. CREATURE FEATURE – FIREFLIES! & Craft.The harbingers of summer in West Virginia. These nocturnal flashers light up the night typically from May until August and can be identified to species by their unique flash pattern and color. Join the naturalist to learn about these lightning bugs then stay to look for these flying marvels along with moths in the next program. Enjoy creating a firefly craft for free. YPP \nSPECIAL EVENING PROGRAM!8:30 p.m. It’s National MOTH Week Celebration and Fireflies!Meet at the Blackwater Falls Nature Center Join park naturalist’s and Friends of Blackwater\, Aaron Graham\, to Celebrate National Moth Week through an evening of observing hordes of moths and fireflies. There will be multiple black light stations set up around the nature center that attempt to draw in moths for us to observe\, take pictures\, and identify as they land on our backdrops. This is a good way to observe handfuls of moths at one location at once and give you a sense of how many moths can be right around your house! We also will be taking the opportunity to attempt to identify fireflies by their flash pattern. The area will be set up until 10:00 p.m. Stay for a little while or the entire program. All ages welcome. Family activity. YPP \nSATURDAY\, July 29\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. \nSaturday Fun!9:30 a.m. WARBLER WANDERJoin the park naturalist to walk along the lake in search of feathered friends. Forgot your binoculars? The naturalist may have a pair you can borrow for the walk. About 1 hour\, some walking. YPP \n11:00 a.m. SKULLS\, SKINS\, SCAT AND SLIME!Join the park naturalist\, to learn how to identify a predator or prey skull\, the purpose of fur and how to identify scat. Afterwards\, create a small baggie of slime to take home. About one hour. No walking. YPP \n12:00 a.m. T is for TREEJoin the recreation assistant for this kid friendly program. Children use fun activities to explore our natural and built environments. This activity is geared toward our young learners\, but all ages are welcome! About 30 minutes. YPP \n2:30 p.m. PREHISTORIC AMBER/COPAL CRAFTJoin the recreation assistant for this craft activity. The sample fossilized over millions of years! Leaves\, flowers and insects have been found trapped inside and scientists have learned a great deal about prehistoric times by analyzing the DNA of these little extinct creatures perfectly preserved by the hardened resin that surrounds them. (Just like in the movie Jurassic Park!). The amber/copal comes in its natural state (dull and “crusted”) and we provide the simple tools to remove the crusty shell and polish the piece into a smooth\, lightweight golden gem. If you polish a piece really well and look closely\, some even contain an insect! . The amber can be polished in anywhere from 30-45 minutes or more depending upon the piece and the shininess desired! Recommended for ages 6 and up. Supplies Limited to first come basis.Craft fee: $4.00. YPP \n4:00 p.m. MICROSCOPY FUNJoin the seasonal naturalist to explore the use of a microscope. Recommended for 8+ years of age. Microscopes may need to be shared. About 1 hour. YPP \nSUNDAY\, July 30\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \nRocks-Fossils-Arrowheads10:30 a.m. FOSSILS AND CRAFT \nLearn how fossils are formed and what fossils and then create your own fossils. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n1:00 p.m. ARROWHEAD CRAFTLet’s take a look at our arrowhead display then create an arrowhead necklace for $1.00 or pound your initials into a leather arrowhead shape for $1.00. YPP \n2:00 p.m. GEOLOGY STROLL at PENDLETON POINT OVERLOOKThis is an easy stroll at Pendleton Point Overlook of Blackwater Falls State Park to listen about the geology of Blackwater Falls and Canyon. About 45 minutes\, 1⁄4 mile. YPP \nMONDAY\, July 31\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n10:00 a.m. NATURALIST LOOP WALKJoin naturalist Kenny in Blackwater Lodge Lobby for a walk along a section of three park trails. About 2 miles. We pace this walk. There is good conversation and area interest.70 minutes. YPP \n11:00 a.m. LEAF RUBBING CRAFTJoin the recreation assistant to use crayons or colored pencils to rub a leaf plate imprint on a piece of paper. Free. \n1:30 p.m. PICKLEBALLJoin the staff to try and play the fastest-growing sport in the US\, rising popularityover the past couple years. SUMMARY:A Glow Walk: Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:All will be aglow this summer evening at Twin Falls Resort State Park. The magic starts at 8:30 p.m. \nThe Glow Walk begins and meets at the park amphitheater. Arrival for you to park your vehicle should occur by 8:00 p.m. but not before 7:30 p.m. We’ll get a glow stick to each person (as supplies last) and get prepared for this go-glow evening. \nThe glow walk starts at 8:30 p.m. and will go from the amphitheater area toward the campground and return. Getting headlights off and our eyes adjusting to the evening is key to great fun. Please consider bringing your own glow sticks or bracelets\, to make it more festive. Dimmer style flashlights with red cellophane over the lens can also be useful. \nOn July 29th the moon is more than 82% illuminated but not yet a Full Moon. \nThis is a dusk and after dark activity. It is magical as night falls and people are walking and talking together by some moonlight. Children should be accompanied by a responsible adult. DESCRIPTION:Hike by the light of a full moon at Cass on July 29\, 2023. \nThe “Full Sturgeon Moon” hike at Cass Scenic Railroad begins from the visitor’s center at 8:30 PM. This evening walk\, led by Park Superintendent Marshall Markley or designee\, is about three miles round trip with a slight grade\, but mostly flat hiking. The hike is free and open to the public. \nThe August full moon is known as the Full Sturgeon Moon. Named so since the Sturgeon\, a large fish\, was most readily caught during this month.Other names for the August Full Moon are the Full Red Moon\, Black Cherries Moon\, Harvest Moon\, and Mountain Shadows Moon. \nJoin us under the light of a full moon. \nReserve lodging: \nBook Now

SUMMARY:Starry Saturday Night - Delta Aquarids Meteor Shower: Chief Logan
DESCRIPTION:Meet Naturalist Lauren Cole at Chief Logan Lodge at the outdoor fire pit area on July 29\, 2023. Lauren will be there from 9:00 – 11:00pm Look through a computerized telescope at various celestial bodies including the moon\, planets\, galaxies\, and more. Learn seasonal constellations and other cool facts about the night sky. Planets Mars\,Mercury\, and Saturn may be visible. The moon is a Waxing Gibbous moon at 88% illumination. Moon pies are available as snacks. \nAbout Delta AquaridsAccording to NASA\, the Southern Delta Aquariids are active beginning in mid-July and are visible until late August with the peak on July 29-31. The meteor count is approximately 20 meteors per hour and a velocity of 25 (41 km) per second.
