DESCRIPTION:Things with wings dominate activities at Holly River State Park from July 20 to 23\, 2023. And it is National Moth Week and on four evenings Holly River has a moth watch. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River. \nTHURSDAY\, July 20\, 20232 pm – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly census. Naturalist Jane will be in the Windy Gap Schoolyard (we’ll use the Balli Shelter if it’s rainy.) Did you know there are more than 20 different species of fireflies in West Virginia? Let’s find out which ones make their home at Holly River. \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. \n9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ Campground 1 Look for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flying insects. \nFRIDAY\, July 21\, 202310 am – HIKE SALT LICK TRAILHike with naturalist Jane. Hiking sticks are useful. \n2 pm – BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGEExperience the hazards birds must face as You play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path to reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home? \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. DESCRIPTION:If you visit Twin Falls State Park July 21-22\, 2023 there is a variety of activities to take advantage of attending. Open to the public\, without charge\, there is no better place to enjoy the outdoors. See our ‘things to do’. \nFRIDAY\, July 21\, 20239:00am -BIRDS!Have you ever wondered what kind of birds visit your garden? Maybe you have caught yourself gazing at the skies or noticing the feathers of avian friends. Maybe you have already started bird watching\, but you’re just not equipped on how to identify the species. \nWell you are in luck\, join the Naturalist at the front entry of the lodge for a simple talk about the basic equipment you can use to help you identify species in your area and backyards. All ages and stages are welcome. 30-45 minutes (YPP) \n10:00am. – “CREEK CRAWL”Meet Ace our summer seasonal at the Falls Trail Parking area for an hour of splashing around in the creek. Help Ace look for crustaceans\, invertebrates and other aquatic life as you wade around looking in cracks and tip rocks (((Rocks are always placed back the way you found them because it is someone’s home!))). Plan on being wet from knees down\, creek bed can be very slippery due to algae that has formed on the rocks. Parents will be required to assist children under the age of 12. (YPP) Allow 1 Hour \n1:00pm. “INVESTIGATION HIKE”Why do our marshmallows disappear every time we hide them? The Summer Naturalist will beinvestigating the woods inside and around the campground for clues as to the insects and mammals that use the area. Join him as you become a mammal/insect private investigator and see if you can find the culprit or culprits to the marshmallow thief! Afternoon fun! (YPP) \n3:00pm. – 5:00pm. – NATURE CENTER is open \nFEATURED EVENT!!6:00pm. – 10:00pm. – LIVE MUSIC“George Dorne and the Trailer Park Poets” is a free concert at the Courtyard located at Twin Falls State Park Lodge. Good eats.Community atmosphere. \nSATURDAY\, July 22\, 20232:00pm – 5:00pm. – NATURE CENTER is open \n7:00pm. – “SUMMIT TRAIL”Join Ace at the Lodge front entrance for a hike along the Summit Trail. Trail is rated as Moderate and is a 1-mile loop. Allow 1 hour depending on group and hiking experience. \n9:00pm. – “UVA HIKE”You may think there is nothing to do after the sun sets for the day except to crawl into your sleeping bag and sleep until morning. But you’re wrong! \nJoin Ace at Shelter 4 for an exciting ultraviolet hike. Hiking/Walking at night is a wonderful opportunity that too few of us partake in. It’s just a little harder to see. When you move through the woods at night with an ultraviolet flashlight\, you open a whole new world. It’s like having a superpower to see invisible creatures and much more. When UV lights hit certain plants\, animals or minerals\, the chemicals in them release visible light. This is not a reflected light. The UV actually excites the chemicals in the object\, which releases the visible light. The effects can actually be spectacular. Whites\, yellows\, orange\, and greens light up like some weird Christmas decorations. It’s something you need to just try. We have the lights for you to use. Program is great for all ages. After the program perhaps play a bat and moth game with the naturalist. YPP \nAbout Sheldon Owen.Sheldon is originally from Mississippi and attended Mississippi State University\, then University of Georgia\, and West Virginia University in his academic pursuits. His studies focused on the ecology of forest dwelling bats\, forest management and raccoon ecology. He has served as a Wildlife Disease Biologist for the National Wildlife Disease Program within USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services and Supervisory Wildlife Biologist for the South Carolina Program of Wildlife Services. Sheldon is currently the Wildlife Extension Specialist for the WVU Extension Service. He welcomes questions from the audience about bats\, wildlife\, career paths and the more nocturnal creatures in West Virginia. \n8:00 p.m. Creature Feature-Fireflies!The harbingers of summer in West Virginia are Lightning Bugs! These nocturnal flashers light up the night typically from May until August and can be identified to species by their unique flash pattern and color. The production is free and open to the public.Shakespeare tells the tale of the lying\, manipulative\, and murderous Richard III and his path to the English throne. Though this play is a history play\, the story’s plot is not completely true to the historical events regarding the real Richard III. True or not\, Richard has been viewed by many as one of Shakespeare’s best villains. \nThe project is spearheaded by Concord University professor of English\, Dr. Gabriel Rieger.
