DESCRIPTION:Pipestem Resort sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge\, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1\,200 feet below. Join Kristen at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about some of WV’s native bat species and ways that they support our ecosystem. We will talk about the different signs and behaviors of adult white-tailed deer and give participants a chance to touch a deer pelt. You’re invited and encouraged to visit our trails\, the falls areas\, the Nature Center\, and Pendleton Lake. \nSpecial entertainment on Thursday evening\, July 20 is West Virginia’s storyteller and champion liar\, Bil Lepp. Don’t miss the show! \nWEDNESDAY\, July 19\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.Let’s hear it for Herps! Day at Blackwater Falls11:00 a.m. Amphibians of the Woods and WaterMeet naturalist Kenny at Sled Run Fire Circle\, to enter the woods and actively search for amphibians (perhaps a reptile!). Kenny\, will assist in identifying the local herps\, toads\, frogs\, salamanders\, turtles\, etc.\, along with proper handling techniques for this sensitive group. About 1 hour. 1/2 mile or less.YPP \n12:00 p.m. Journal CraftFind the recreation assistant to purchase a journal or bring your own and then learn some of her tips to keep a nature journal. Supplies limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $2.00 for journal\, or bring your own. If you are an overnight guest at Blackwater Falls\, leave the camper\, your cabin or the lodge room and join us. There is no charge and everyone is welcome. The program is open to the public. \nLepp is an author of children’s books\, audio tapes of tall and perhaps true stories and a champion liar. He was a recent History® Channel host. “Man vs. History” was a series that followed Bil as he traveled off the beaten path across the country to dis- cover the truth behind mysteries and legends of American history. Each episode Bil investigated\, decoded and debunked iconic subjects and figures like Billy the Kid\, Johnny Appleseed\, Davy Crockett\, Houdini and more. Whether speaking to experts\, handling artifacts or testing historical weapons\, Bil worked to determine if the story in question was fact\, fiction or somewhere in-between. DESCRIPTION:Things with wings dominate activities at Holly River State Park from July 20 to 23\, 2023. And it is National Moth Week and on four evenings Holly River has a moth watch. Join Master Naturalist Jane Birdsong for these nature based activities and traditional recreational pursuits of archery and hiking when visiting Holly River. \nTHURSDAY\, July 20\, 20232 pm – FIREFLIES – WHAT MAKES THEM GLOW?Learn about their evolutionary history and how to take part in a firefly census. Naturalist Jane will be in the Windy Gap Schoolyard (we’ll use the Balli Shelter if it’s rainy.) Did you know there are more than 20 different species of fireflies in West Virginia? Let’s find out which ones make their home at Holly River. \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. \n9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ Campground 1 Look for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flying insects. \nFRIDAY\, July 21\, 202310 am – HIKE SALT LICK TRAILHike with naturalist Jane. (1.2 miles/1hr) Meet on the office porch before 10\, or at the trailhead by cabins at 10:10. An easy hike except for the short uphill climb. Wear sturdy shoes. Hiking sticks are useful. \n2 pm – BIRD MIGRATION CHALLENGEExperience the hazards birds must face as You play an interactive game in Windy Gap Schoolyard. Each “bird” follows a path to reach the next rest stop. Will you make it to your summer home? \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots. Look for the naturalist at the archery range in the game field across from the office. \n9:30 pm – MOTH NIGHT @ Campground 2Look for the illuminated white sheet\, as we hope to attract some of the largest & most interesting night flying insects. \nSATURDAY\, July 22\, 202310 am – HOW TO MEASURE TREESNaturalist Jane will demonstrate\, then give You the opportunity to practice measuring circumference and use triangulation geometry to measure the height of trees. Maybe we can locate some really big trees OR maybe when you go home you can measure your trees to see if you have a state record! Meet on the Holly River State Park office porch. \n4 pm – ARCHERYLearn to hold a bow\, load arrows\, target shoot & long shots.
