DESCRIPTION:Early in the week\, July 17 – 19\, 2023 you’ll find these activities to do at Blackwater Falls State Park that begin at the nature center unless posted otherwise. You’re invited and also encouraged to visit our trails\, the falls areas\, the Nature Center\, and Pendleton Lake. \nMONDAY\, July 17\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \n11:00 a.m. Finding Your Way and CraftEnjoy a short film about using a map compass. Afterwards\, make a cardboard compass craft. Supplies limited to first come basis. Craft Fee: $2.00 YPP \n1:30 p.m. Log Cabin CraftOur recreation gal Kyra invited you to stain a decorative log cabin. It’s a very nice memento to remember your visit to Blackwater Falls. Craft fee: $10.00. Supplies limited to first come basis. \n3:00 p.m. Feature MovieIt’s a cosmic comedy movie about a determined robot. If the afternoon it hot\, the nature center is a cool place to be. About 98 minutes. Rated G. \nTUESDAY\, July 18\, 2023Nature Center: 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Rocks-Fossils-Arrowheads 11:00 a.m. Geology Stroll at Pendleton Point Overlook- Join the seasonal naturalist for an easy stroll at Pendleton Point Overlook of Blackwater Falls State Park to listen about the ology of Blackwater Falls and Canyon. About 45 minutes\, ¼ mile. YPP \n1:00 p.m. Fossils and CraftJoin the seasonal naturalist to learn how fossils are formed and what fossils and then create your own fossils. Supplies limited to first come basis. Craft fee: $2.00 YPP \n2:30 p.m. Arrowhead CraftJoin the recreation assistant to look at our arrowhead display in the nature center then create an arrowhead necklace for $1.00 or pound your initials into a leather arrowhead shape for $1.00. YPP \n4:00 p.m. Microscopy FunJoin the recreation assistant and seasonal naturalist to explore the use of a microscope. Recommended for 8+ years of age. Microscopes may need to be shared. We’ll trudge into the woods and actively search for amphibians (perhaps a reptile!). Naturalist Kenny will assist in identifying the local herps\, along with proper handling techniques for this sensitive group of creatures.He may even tell a story or two. DESCRIPTION:Pipestem Resort sits on the east rim of the Bluestone River Gorge\, which carves through the plateau to the scenic Bluestone River 1\,200 feet below. Visit the Nature Center which is open Wednesday – Sunday 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. See our exhibits and heritage structures\, and sit a spell in our West Virginia made rocking chairs\, listen to the outside birds inside\, or attend activities planned July 17 – 20\, 2023. \nMONDAY\, July 17\, 2023 \n1:00 pm Nature Center Open House- Stop by the Nature Center to meet Bryce and have a tour of our Nature Center and Historic Structures. YPP \n2:00 pm Lake Dip- Meet Bryce at the pedestrian bridge near McKeever to walk to a nearby lake to see what critters we might catch. YPP \n4:00 pm Ultimate Frisbee- Meet Bryce at the Campground store to learn how to play Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate is a team sport which mixes elements of football\, basketball\, and rugby\, substituting the ball with a flying disc (frisbee) and the referee with spirit of the game. \nTUESDAY\, July 18\, 2023 \n11:00 am Turtle Talk- Meet Kristen at the activities shelter behind the Nature Center to learn aboutturtles and what you can do to help them in the wild. Great for ages young and old. YPP \n2:00 pm An Extraordinary Ordinary Moth- Meet Kristen in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to hear a storybook story about a moth. Then color a picture of a moth any color you want. A great activity for kids or adults who love moths. YPP \n4:00 pm Go Batty for Bats- Cute or creepy\, bats are an important part of our environment. Join Kristen at the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to learn about some of WV’s native bat species and ways that they support our ecosystem. YPP \nWEDNESDAY\, July 19\, 2023 \n10:00 am Deer Talk Time- Join Kristen at the activities shelter behind the nature center to learn about deer. We will talk about the different signs and behaviors of adult white-tailed deer and give participants a chance to touch a deer pelt. Additionally\, Kristen will discuss what to do if you come across a fawn. YPP \n3:00 pm Plaster Tracks- Meet Kristen in the Activity Shelter behind the Nature Center to make a plaster track to take home. Drying times may vary due to weather conditions\, but please allow for a minimum of 30 minutes. YPP \n5:00 pm Wildlife of North America Game- Meet Julie at the Nature Center for a quiz game about North American wildlife. SUMMARY:Hearth Cooking Demonstration: Prickett's Fort
DESCRIPTION:Come out and tour the fort and smell the food cooking over an open hearth\, the way food was prepared during the colonial period of our history. Recipes will be available upon request. Regular admission applies. This activity is at Prickett’s Fort State Park on Tuesday\, July 18\, 2023 from 11:00AM – 2:00PM.   \n\n\n\nHistoric attractions at Prickett’s Fort are open April 24 to October 29\, 2023.
