SUMMARY:Civil War Days: Twin Falls
DESCRIPTION:Wyoming County Historical Museum presents a Civil War reenactment. Everyone is invited. Reenactment participants set up camp and prepare for battle Cannon and gun fire echo across the park at different times during the event. Saturday evening\, July 15\, 2023 includes a night firing of the cannons. \nThis is a family friendly event and is held yearly in Wyoming County. The weekend explores the events\, personal stories\, weaponry\, clothing\, food\, dance\, etc. during the American Civil War. Attendees may take the opportunity to explore\, learn and have conversation with reenactors about the way our ancestors lived in the mid 1800s and the impact the Civil War had on their lives and on Wyoming County. \nThis is a free event. Pickleball is played on the old tennis court with a net in the middle. Some describe it as playing ping pong but standing on the table\, Similar to tennis but served underhand and less running. The ball is light – it’s the weight of a whiffle ball. The paddle is similar to a racquetball paddle\, but about twice that size. SUMMARY:History Alive! Gabriel Arthur : Tygart Lake
DESCRIPTION:The nature center area at Tygart Lake State Park is the place to be July 14\, 2023. Reenactor and historian Doug Wood portrays Gabriel Arthur at 7:00 p.m. and following the program\, Wood answers questions about the individual and the era that Gabriel Arthur lived. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy this evening program filled with West Virginia history and American history. \nGabriel Arthur is believed to be the first European-American to see the Kanawha Valley while he traveled with a band of Yuchis in 1674. He was sent by his master\, Abraham Wood\, with a partner and Appamattuck guides from Fort Henry (present Petersburg\, Virginia) to explore western lands and trade with the Indians west of the Blue Ridge. His partner was killed\, but Arthur traveled widely with the Yuchis\, participating in their battles against Spaniards and enemy Indians in the Ohio Valley and elsewhere\, during the Beaver Wars.  He entered the Kanawha River Valley\, where he was welcomed by Yuchi allies\, the Monetons\, into their large village.  After two near brushes with death\, Arthur returned to Fort Henry with hope of extending his master’s fur trade westward.  \nThis evening program is made possible by the West Virginia Humanities Council\, History Alive! programming. The presentation is open to the public without charge. The educational aspects may be of homeschooled interest. SUMMARY:Wings of Wonder-Birds of Prey: Camp Creek State Park
DESCRIPTION:Camp Creek State Park is a favorite setting for the bird of prey program presented by Three Rivers Avian Center (TRAC) Friday\, July 14\, 2023 at 7:00p.m. The educational birds are a great opportunity to learn what birds say “who cooks for me\, who cooks for you all?” as well as meeting other raptors. You may hear owls when camping at Camp Creek. \nThis nature program is all about raptors native to West Virginia: hawks\, eagles\, falcons\, and owls. You’ll learn about the habitat\, diet and behavior of each bird presented\, the most common causes of injury to each species and the laws protecting these special birds. This program is scheduled at several state parks in 2023. \nThere is no fee to attend. Open to the public\, the program lasts about an hour and is staged at the Earlie Moon Shelter. Questions are welcomed. This is a family friendly event. An excellent presentation for all ages.
