DESCRIPTION:July includes how to measure trees\, archery and fishy stuff at Holly River State Park. Join naturalist Jane Birdsong at these activities\, July 6 – 8\, 2023. Don’t forget the restaurant is open and hiking trails welcome your footsteps. \nTHURSDAY\, July 6\, 2023 \n2 pm – HOW TO MEASURE TREESNaturalist Jane will demonstrate\, then give You the opportunity to practice measuring circumference and use triangulation geometry to measure the height of trees. It sounds complicated but once you work with Jane\, it makes it easy. Remember trees in your yard could be a state record in size and trees at Holly River could be also. Let’s learn how to measure trees. Meet on the park office porch. All ages welcome\, family units and friends can work together. SUMMARY:Intro to Spinning for Adults: Prickett’s Fort
DESCRIPTION:Try your hand at spinning wool at Prickett’s Fort State Park. Participants will receive one hour of personal one-on-one instruction from one of our skilled interpreters on Friday\, July 7 or Saturday\, July 8\, 2023. \nOne-hour sessions are $20 per person and participants must be age 16 and older. Meet at the overlook on the park entrance road to take a hike up the Eagle Point trail. This 1 mile each way trail is the newest on the park and ascends to a beautiful overlook above Rt 20. Long pants\, closed toed shoes\, and water are recommended. Its a little difficult at first\, but the view is wonderful \n1pm compass treasure huntMeet at the swimming pool to learn the basic operations of a compass and compete for a prize. A compass! Not an electronic device. Old school fun. *ypp \n3pm riverview trail clean upJoin me at the pool to take a conservation hike along the lower sections of the riverview trail and help clean up the debris from our last high water event. We’ll talk about the effects of rain at the park and maybe see some wildlife as we work to keep Bluestone State Park tidy. \n6pm tye dyeIt’s tye dye time again this weekend in case you missed it on Saturday.. DESCRIPTION:The annual “Bug Bash” Weekend at Chief Logan State Park Lodge is July 7-9\, 2023. Assistant Superintendent Lauren Cole invites all ages to join her for some excitement about fascinating wildlife commonly known as “bugs.” “We are not bashing or mashing anything. We are learning about arthropods\, butterflies\, moths\, fireflies and other insects in a fun way” says Cole. “Bug Bash” is Friday\, July 7 and Saturday\, July 8\, 2023 from 8:00 – 10:00 pm. \n“Bug Bash” weekend activities may include a big bug jar\, insect luring\, arthropod jeopardy\, butterfly bag toss and Monarch masquerade craft\, firefly glow activity and gardening for pollinators.  \nActivities are in or begin in the Conference Room at Chief Logan Lodge. There will be an insect luring light set up in the gazebo or the back patio where we hope to discover moths and other more nocturnal insects. We encourage use of a camera to capture insect images that we use to identify unusual finds. Children must bring a parent or guardian with them. All Bug Bash activities are free to attend.
